The story of Titanic is perhaps most well-known for its ending - the image of the tragic loss of the liner, taking with it nearly 1500 souls into the freezing depths of the North Atlantic, has been seared into our collective memory for over 100 years. Tragedy is what most people think of when they hear the name “Titanic.” But this is, of course, only part of the story. The White Star Line vessel Titanic that existed before the early morning hours of April 15, 1912, was a very different ship. In truth, she was a liner like any other, albeit larger and grander than most. Her early days were fraught with frenzied final touches and inspections as the last-minute preparations were made for a very routine yet hopeful maiden voyage. Today we’ll be looking at the ship as she was in her very brief heyday, in the final days leading up to her departure from Harland and Wolff at Belfast, Ireland for Southampton England on her way to her date with destiny - a moment in time when there was still pride and hope for Titanic.
