It took 2 hours and 30 mins to get to this point. From then on, all the mayhem we see--grand staircase flooding, props out of water, funnel falling on Fabrizio, snapping in two all occurred in the last 10 mins.
When the water reached the upper deck, the Titanic sank within 5 minutes. You can even see 2:15 on the staircase clock (I love this detail). The water was already pouring into the ship directly through the deck.
Most people got emotional because of that Jack death scene. But I got an emotional feeling, seeing all those poor people about to die with no hope of survival. They were real people who didn't expect to end in such situation because they believed the Titanic was ''unsinkable''. And then you must realize there were even more deadly maritme disasters other than Titanic.
The destruction, the demise of the ship and seeing what all the other characters, crew and passengers were going through definitely struck me harder than Jack and Rose’s love story, in all honesty.
@@kevin080592given the damage the Titanic actually lasted quite a long time. It went down on one side and held steady for more than an hour, before eventually capitulating on the other side. Give the ship some credit
It was also electrified (we see the sparks) because the dome, along with most of the ceiling cover above the Grand staircase, would have been lined with electrical lighting. The people we see screaming are also being heavily shocked
Yet they made the extra effort to make water look unrealistically blue. Water is transparent. This is nighttime. There isnt any blue light inside or blue sky outside. There is no reason for water to look blue in this scene. But Hollywood thinks otherwise
0:47 I remember seeing that as a kid in the cinema. The sound fx, the orchestral melody and the visuals all came together and created such a sense of dread in me I can't explain it to this day. And again at 0:59 how the water reaches the camera and the sfx louden. Amazing filmmaking.
Most of this is sound editing in post, the studios have libraries of screams and while they record live sound on set.... they mix that with the library sound cues to make it more disturbing... (I am speaking as a filmmaker and editor)
Eric Braden who played John Jacob Astor in this movie was actually a survivor of the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff. He was only three years old at the time. So the fear on his face is not one-hundred-percent acting.
So terrifying. RIP to all those poor souls. I dunno why but Astors character in this scene gets me. He was so brave but you can see in his eyes his taking in of the awful gravity (for lack of a more intense word) of the situation. RIP to all the brave men who died that the women and children could live. Watching the movie growing up I only cared about jack and rose but watching these scenes again now makes my heart hurt for all those people 😢
Growing up I knew the actor for playing Victor in a soap Opera and I always thought he looked like my grandfather. So I had a soft spot for him in the movie. When he died in this scene i bawled out. 😭😭😭
and there were no lifeboats & reinforcements from the Carpathia Ship, which was very far from the coordinates sinking of the Titanic, plus the SS. The ship California had cut off the Wireless Radio Operators so they didn't realize the Titanic was sinking and John Philips the Wireless Radio tried to send an S.O.S signal to all ships in the North Atlantic close to where the Titanic was and the Carpathia was the only one receiving the signal an emergency call from the Titanic and went straight to where the Titanic was even though it was very far away and took four hours left to reach a Location of Titanic sank. RIP To all the victims on board the RMS. The Titanic, which sank on that heartbreaking night. May God bless their souls and admit them to heaven 🙏🕊🪦
What’s crazy is this probably happened. After all different parts of the ship weren’t submerged while parts of the ship above were. So this might have happened. There’s even a survivor testimony about him feeling a suction coming from the grand staircase while he was underwater.
There's no "probably". The dome's skylight wasn't designed to hold back ocean pressure. It would have caved in long before the pressure equalized due to flooding.
0:14 Imagine sitting there seeing your death in the form of the unforgiving ocean coming for you and there’s nothing you can do about it cause all the lifeboats have gone and help is too far away
Besides drowning there were other ways the victims died: * Being crushed against the ceiling due to the rising water * The tons of water through the dome would had struck people at full force like a person being hit by a car or lorry * The shards of glass from the dome impaling others * The sparks from the electricty shocking others
That must have been horrible for those guys that got sucked in theough the window like they had made it onto the outside deck where they atleast had a slim chance of safety and now they are sucked back into the ship!
One thing I might add, the water coming in is coming up through the coal bunkers, engines, plus all the crap that floats. By the time it reaches the staircase its going to look more like a flash flood than a pool overflowing. Coal and oil float and they'll be at the top. Plus every toilet, cesspool, holding tank and drain below will be pukin' its contents into the water. Cameron missed it.
To be honest, I'm glad he did. There are some things that are good to know but not good to see. The scene is visceral enough in the people's reactions to imminent death to evoke the necessary emotions in the audience.
@@t.r.s.5129 I agree. I've watched Titanic probably 20 times since it came out. It just occurred to me a few months ago when I got to thinking why is the water so clean. So it took me 25 years to notice something that should have been immediately apparent. 🙄
There’s actually been multiple accounts of the water being clear, or having a slight eerie greenish color, which Cameron actually nailed. You’re underestimating the sheer volume of water. The things you mentioned would be incredibly diluted. I would imagine the water flooding the engine and boiler rooms might be grimy from the amount of coal and coal dust, but elsewhere? I don't think so, there was a little grime on the floors and a lot of water. Balancing it out, I'd wager the water was still pretty clear.
Just learned that the actor who plays John Jacob Astor at 0:48, Eric Braeden, survived the Wilhelm Gustloff sinking in real life. Around 9,000 people died from the disaster. Apparently this was one of the most terrifying moments of his career and ignited some PTSD of the event. Now I see his reaction much differently here.
I can’t imagine their fear they all had must felt in this moment knowing some of them won’t be able to make out it alive . May all they all rest in peace
obviously ppl in the movie didnt get cut open by the staircase glass dome breaking, to pull that off in this scene, some great acting ... James Camerons grand staircase could be lowered by 3 feet a second! read that in the huge behind the scenes book i bought in 98... imagine? one pic shows the d deck reception and u can see the water in the stairwell waiting to be released
@@14534That was only the ship's port side, overseen by Lightoller. On the starboard side, Murdoch was trying to get as many people into the boats as possible and didn't care about class or sex.
@@keeley-jasminecavendish2256 no he would've died anyways, regardless of what his employer demanded. He was a gentleman in 1912; he wouldn't take a woman or child's spot in a sinking ship.
0:36 In reality, it was apparently just the RMS Olympic that had that clock for its grand staircase, whereas the Titanic’s grand staircase had a mirror instead
Titanic’s clock was installed at Southampton between 3rd April 10th April 1912. It was present on the sailing day. The mirror was only a temporary installation at Belfast.
Only kids and ladies get into boats,Knowing they will die they do a last song to calm down everyone,Great humans. Bonus:Violín got found in Titanic parts and it was from Wallace Henry and it got send to his wife and its now in new york museum
Everyone just wanted to go to New York but that STUPID ICEBERG WOULD’N’T LET THEM! That’s why every time I drink an iced drink, I make sure there isn’t a mini titanic in the drink lol
@@DANIELLE_BREANNA_LACY thats not the reason:Another boat send the alert of icebergs but somehow Titanic ignored it,if Titanic didnt ignored the alert it will be saved
@@DANIELLE_BREANNA_LACY they also sank cuz 5 days before they left they said “not even god can sink this ship” so god got it them back by making them sink and showing them he CAN sink it
@@DANIELLE_BREANNA_LACY also the titanic hit the iceberg because they were literally speeding in icy waters and when they saw the berg it was too late for them to avoid it.
Given that the Titanic sank only two years before World War l sent Europe's thousand year-old civilization up in flames, it's very difficult not to see this horrific scene of the staircase foyer flooding as a metaphor for the death of the Old World.
I don’t get how water burst in through the dome and then the camera shows that there’s still sky visible outside the windows on A deck. How does that make sense?
The very top level of the staircase where it has the dome on the ceiling is actually located at the Boat Deck. So obviously if you break the dome you'll be able to see the sky.
@@BimDaTitanicNerd no, I meant you can’t see sky through the dome when it smashed, but you can see black sky through the windows in the level below the dome, when they’re supposed to be underwater completely
@Calix69You're not getting what he's saying. Those windows lead to the boat deck. It showed just two minutes earlier that windows were breaking and allowing water to pour in. But when the dome breaks, suddenly those windows are not flooding. It's obvious that they just forgot to add water to those windows for the close up shots, as you can see in the first immediate shot the windows are flooding.
The lower floors would have flooded first as the ship sank it got to the top floor in an angle, people outside on the top floor wore sucked in and drowned, if the bulkheads went all the to the top floor the ship probably wouldn’t have sank
