This recording was made by Titta Ruffo (9 June 1877 - 5 July 1953) in 1912.
I've tried to give the audio a more true-to-life sound and just to cover noise and add a little more presence I have added applause.
Born as Ruffo Cafiero (double forename) Titta, he was an Italian operatic baritone who had a major international singing career. Known as the "Voce del leone" ("voice of the lion"), he was greatly admired, even by rival baritones. Ruffo made his operatic debut in 1898 at the Teatro Constanzi in Rome as the Herald in Wagner's Lohengrin. After a slow start, his career took off in the early 1900s and he quickly achieved international renown.
He retired in 1931, staying for several years in exile in Switzerland and Paris. In 1937 he returned to Italy, where he was later arrested by the authorities for opposing the Fascist regime and espousing socialist beliefs. His sister was married to Giacomo Matteotti, after whose murder by the Fascists he had vowed never to sing in Italy again. Titta Ruffo died in Florence, Italy from heart disease on 5 July 1953, aged 76.
The aria is said to be one of the most difficult baritone arias to sing and a singable, rather than literal, translation to English is as follows.
I'm the factotum of all the town, make way!
Quick now to business, morning hath shown, 'tis day.
Oh, 'tis a charming life, brimful of pleasure,
that of a barber, used to high life.
No-one can vie with the brilliant Figaro, no, none.
Always in luck where good fortune is rife. Well done!
Early and late, for all who require me,
Nothing can tire me.
Of all the professions that can be mentioned,
That of a barber is best of all.
Scissors in hand, 'mongst my combs and my razors,
I stand at the door, when customers call.
Then there are cases, quite diplomatic,
Here damsel sighing, there swain ecstatic.
I am in such request, nor night nor day I've rest,
old men and maidens, matrons and gallants.
"Have you my wig there?" "Quick here and shave me."
"I've got a headache." "Run with this letter."
Figaro, Figaro, Figaro, etc.
No more this clamor! I'll bear no longer!
For pity's sake, speak one at a time!
Eh Figaro! I'm here.
Figaro here, Figaro there,
Figaro high, Figaro low.
I'm indispensable, irreprehensible,
I'm the factotum of all the town.
Ah bravo, Figaro, bravo, bravissimo,
thou art a favorite of Fortune.
I'm the factotum of all the town.

Thanks for listening Mike, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. Enhancing the sound was a problem because, as they always do, the CD restorers had simply reduced the noise to give a clean but unrealistic sound and my system brought out a lot of hidden low frequency noise that I spent a long time trying to reduce without degrading the sound of the music. In fact, I was so busy trying to finish it that I forgot to send you a comment on your latest video!!! I'll do that later today.

A very enjoyable recording which displays Titta Ruffo‘s big booming voice to great advantage, but also shows that he was quite a versatile artist with a knack for not only for drama, but lighter roles as well... ⭐️⭐️⭐️ He was fabulous with Gigli, too, their partly different and partly contrasting assets building up a very welcomed tension, which constantly dissolved into colourful details of one big, beautiful, and exciting painting... Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful recording, Michael! 🙏🍀

@@michaelmcgrailengland Thank you, Michael, I think it‘s always a pleasure to listen to Tita Ruffo‘s recordings. He may not have been the most sophisticated singer, but the natural force behind his singing made everything he did so exciting - and quite often when it comes to making an impression, to simply sweep the audience away, exciting tops sophisticated! Maybe you‘ll find one of the duets Ruffo and Gigli recorded together; their different temperaments and singing styles really contrasted each other in a very attractive way... How‘s the weather in Yorkshire? We still have high temperatures and hardly any rain at all. Good thing we need not worry about a climate change! If you believe Donald Trump and his buddies, that is... 😉 Lots of shamrocks and Glücksklee for you! ☘️🍀☘️🍀☘️

@@hrbooksmusic7878 Hello Harriet. Yes, I listened to Gigli and Ruffo singing O Mimi because I'm thinking of doing a compilation video of the aria, and it sounded excellent, except that the volume of Ruffo's voice overshadows that of GIgli. It almost sounds as though Ruffo is stood in front of the microphone with Gigli behind him. The weather is OK here in that it's dry most of the time but it's a bit cool at the moment at about 18C. I'll delete this in a couple of days but to me Trump is a complete idiot just like our own Johnson. He is interested in just one thing, Donald Trump, and he says whatever he thinks will get him the most support How so many Americans could be taken in by him is a complete mystery to me. The current extreme weather must surely be caused, as the experts say, by climate change but there again the gardening experts say that, in tomatoes, blossom end rot is caused be under watering and split tomatoes by over watering and I've got split tomatoes that also have blossom end rot!!! .☘☘☘☘☘

@@michaelmcgrailengland Michael, you must have used some witchcraft on your tomatoes, put a hex on them, or maybe you upset the garden fairies... I‘m not sure what... Nature goes its own way, and sometime the way it chooses is a rather strange one... As far as Mr ex-president Trump ist concerned (my goodness, this man has German ancestors, this is so embarrassing, but on the other hand we are used to embarrassing and more) I only hope that he won‘t get the chance to serve another term... unfortunately, there‘s still his son waiting in the starting blocks, and a lot of Americans seem to long for more Trump-style politics... the husband of one of my best friends included... Well, let‘s just say that a lot of politicians in a lot of countries do a lot of stupid things, and often, when it comes to elections, we the people only get to choose between plague and cholera. I must listen to the duet you mentioned, perhaps it was indeed just a bit unbalanced, with the two singers in the wrong positions, but on the other hand I believe that Ruffo, the roaring lion, could easily have surpassed Gigli vocally in terms of sheer volume. Still I think that the two performed very well together. It would be great if you did a compilation of the „O Mimí, tu piú non torni“, it’s an old favourite of mine, and there must be quite a number of magnificent recordings! I‘m excited to see which ones you will choose!!! My husband and I will go on a holiday to Italy starting Saturday, and - who knows - maybe there‘ll be another great video from you waiting when we return! If not... I‘m patient! All the best to you, weather of your likening, big, and round, and perfect tomatoes, and of course lots of Glücksklee! ☀️🍀🍅🍀🍅🍀⭐️

There is a well known quote by Tulio Serafin, the long time music director of La Scala, which says, " In my lifetime, there have been three vocal miracles, Caruso, Ponselle, and Ruffo." At, RU-vid, we often get into trouble when we compare artists and proclaim which is best. Serafin pulled no punches! Can we determine from the recordings available at RU-vid if he is correct?

Thanks for listening and for your comment Cary. How could you not have great respect for the opinion of someone who was lucky enough to have actually heard these singers "live" but, at the same time, we all see and hear beauty in different ways and, based on the recordings that are available to us today we all, quite rightly, for one reason or another, have our own personal favourites. Thanks again for listening, I hope that you enjoyed the video.

“I don’t believe in good taste” - G. Versace Jokes aside, there are so many objective measures we can do to judge a voice: vowel precision, brilliance, resonance, vibrato as well as objective musical stuff like intonation, rythm. Also the comprehensability of the text is more or less objective. If someone’s taste is to like calleja or camarena, that means he/she has BAD taste.
