No other baritone can touch this recording. It is the ultimate recording of this aria. To have that HUGE a voice and to move that easily is phenomenal. Notice the pure EE on the high note in the end. No modification which is exactly how it should be. Covered, but not modified.
Titta Ruffo (June 9, 1877 - July 5, 1953). In Musical America, December 27, 1913, Ruffo wrote the following: "In view of the fact that numerous vocal instructors have endeavored to claim the credit of having been my "teacher" I desire to state emphatically that my brother Ettore is the one to whom practically all such distinction is due. I studied four months at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome under Signor Persichini and was told that I possessed neither voice nor musical talent.
Afterward I received instruction from Signor Sparapani for two months and from Signor Casini for four months, but as this was not sufficient tuition for an operatic career I placed myself under the tutelage of my brother. I remained his faithful pupil for six years and am the living proof of his scientific method of voice production. All those asserting that they have been my "teacher" and therefore responsible for my success arrogate to themselves false and mendacious prerogatives." This is the ultimate chiaroscuro voice. So dark and yet so full of squillante!! No one can touch this version for ultimate vocal splendor!

Purtroppo....
@bodiloto
@bodiloto 5 лет назад

When asked why he did not teach after he retired, Ruffo is said to have replied: "How could I teach what I never learned?" Another famous baritone was asked if most baritones weren't, in fact, just frustrated tenors. He replied: "Perhaps, but so are most tenors."

Actually he taught Guelfi so it isn't true what he was saying. I think he said that because he didn't want to be hassled by so many who would want lessons. And actually he said in a recorded interview his brother taught him the scientific method of voice.

I think more in the older days. Now opera is so bad at every house, including La Scala, that no one cares as much. I would love to sing there for the tradition of who had sung there before, but I find the opera house directors very disappointing because they hire mediocre singers. I am not impressed. The old greats would be disappointed. In 1979 Tebaldi said all we have are tiny mosquitoes flying around. Now it is worse.

The video is there. Just search his name. Gobbi was far better than what we have now, but he still had problems with his technique. His top was not very good and he tended to have a caprino. Florez has one too and the sound is very, very small. On the videos, however, they make it seem like he has a big sound full of squillante. He doesn't. It is very small and thin, Today all the performances are enhanced. They increase the overtones to make the voices sound like they are...cont'd

You are welcome. Just as when you say della as opposed to dela, the breath stops on the double consonants, but not on the single one. In singing this is not ideal. There are times when you can do it more even in singing perhaps when it is in a recitative or in an easier part of the range etc.
@lsmart
@lsmart 3 года назад
Clearly, no one can touch him in the sheer deafening size of his voice, and he certainly added a ton of originality to his singing. Nevertheless, to me, Tibbett still reigns supreme, both overall, and in this aria. Ruffo cannot control or modulate his voice and his singing style nearly as well as Tibbett, who can go from the most dramatic tones to the most sensitive in one breath, and who sounds like a truly fun-loving tease in this aria, something Ruffo fails to do. The sheer size of Ruffo's voice inhibits his ability to sound romantic, or to sing this aria fast and with a delightful gallop, as Tibbett does here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6GhwDObJk84.html

I have no clue what recording you are listening to. Merrill was known - and known by Italian conductors - for having impeccable diction. Are you listening to a recording of him when he was older? And I have news for you, Merrill was LOVED in Italy.
@SilverSingingMethod
@SilverSingingMethod 11 лет назад
It is very quick, as is much of Rossini. Therefore it is difficult to pronounce it the way you would speak. The point is that you still understand it. And remember these are Italian singers who are doing it. When moving quickly in singing it is very difficult to pronounce. You cannot stop the breath as in speaking.
@SilverSingingMethod
@SilverSingingMethod 11 лет назад
I am afraid that what is happening is that your ears are tuned for modern recording equipment. It is hard to really know what to listen for in the older recordings, especially if you do not have good equipment. When people start training their voice properly and understanding singing they start hearing things more accurately and differently than before. I am sure that would happen to you. Tibbett is one of the best. Older recordings can lack some clarity. These singers...cont'd...
@SilverSingingMethod
@SilverSingingMethod 11 лет назад
...are so far beyond the modern singers like Spagnoli (is that his name? lol) that it is incomparable. Gobbi would have told you the same. But, again, the recording quality can throw you off a bit. All the greatest conductors and singers in history, for example, and vocal experts would tell you Merrill and Tibbett were among the greatest who ever lived. So you must trust that they know something and perhaps you are not really hearing accurately what is there.

Yes, when you are singing you should not stop the breath for the double consonants. None of the old greats did as they knew that it was not good for the voice. You cannot exactly sing as you speak Italian. It is only the modern "diction" freaks that have caused it to be an issue. Just as in English you would not sing "don't" with an explosive 'T" on the end even though technically it is there.
