Titta Ruffo (June 9, 1877 - July 5, 1953). This is the ultimate chiaroscuro voice. Ponselle stated that Ruffo told her that he had great mezza voci and pianissimi, but the audiences only wanted to hear his fortissimi. One could understand why. What a vocal phenomenon. Here he clearly demonstrates his great mezza voci. In particular listen to the mezza voce on "sogno" right in the passaggio. Wonderful. Big voices, like Ruffo, must be careful overusing mezza voci and pianissimi. The muscles are not as small and fast twitched as a lyric voice and they need more to keep them open and free. Also, their mezza voci and pianissimi will be fuller and bigger than a lyric so we must be careful not to compare.
