All the cities that have major problems, you’re talking about places like LA, Detroit, places that had massive amount of Black people doing really well and coming up fast 50, 60, 70 years ago. financially based on the strong production and manufacturing jobs. Then the production just up and left those cities. Dropped the bottom out on the lives they had built. Those who went the street route probably didn’t really care to sit and do the hourly math. $2000 back then was enough to last for couple months. Then the younger generation saw them having things, more than others, and much faster and it set a precedence. Now if you choosing the streets TODAY… then yeah, in most cases you just don’t want to work and get laughed at because the culture (American culture) has glorified street life, gangster life, mafia life, and, “the working man is a sucker.” There are way more opportunities now, and way more jobs available than back then. The flipside to THAT though.. is Not all of those jobs are GAINFUL employment. Wealthy inequality under Trump reached the highest it has ever been. Particularly for Black people. That was reported by his own economists. And the stimulus is being paid back via taxes, it wasn’t free money. Trump is the first president in modern history to exit office having a net loss of jobs when he left. He lost 2 million+ jobs from the US economy. Many of them are never coming back post pandemic. He also holds the all-time record for the lowest year in growth at 1% in his final year. And the total of all four years in office, Trump had by far the lowest average U.S. GDP growth rate of any of the last seven U.S. presidents. Completely destroyed the 6 year uptrend that he inherited from Obama. So… even at $15/hr… even at $20/hr… that is actually not ENOUGH. Even with inflation being down to 3.2% since last year and the S&P500 / NasDaq setting all time records last year and again this year - the damage has already been done. So…. It’s not JUST people not wanting to work. It’s half people not wanting to work, and half people wanting to work but work still not being enough.

Wanting to be in the streets is largely predicated on young folks' environment which is often being surrounded by poverty, underfunded schools, violence, little to no dignifying jobs, and parents or relatives sometimes battling addiction with little to no means to get clean. It's not to justify it at all but young people see the streets as a means to be someone important, make cash, and look up to the older ones with the clothes and jewelry upon perceiving the straight life as working shitty jobs for seemingly nothing. We should be focused on the root causes of why kids get drawn to the street life which is solving chronic poverty in a lot of places in this country. It's way less someone apt to go to college, living a relatively stable home life, and deciding, "Nah to that, I wanna be in the hood and build my name by sliding and hustling." Long story short, "product of your environment" is very real and it's embarrassing how much poverty exists in the States that needs to be addressed out loud. It used to be 100 years ago when Italians immigrated here did the street life seemingly made sense to young folks who saw their parents work 13 hours a day to still stay in poverty, and they saw the gangsters with the cars, clothes, and access wanting to be them. Nowadays, Italians and others have means to go to college and make their money legitimately without worrying about jail, and every group and what have you deserves access to those avenues than feeling like being in the street is the only way they can succeed in their heads.
