The "mestizaje" or mixing that took place in the so-called "New Spain" (Now Mexico) allowed inhabitants of this New World to be exposed and learn music according to the western chromatic scale and play woodwind and brass instruments. They learned fast and soon they had their own bands and ensembles. Some of the pieces from Spain still remain into the local repertoire. To this day, we hear "pasodobles" and "jotas", such as this one from Aragon, titled "La Madre del Cordero" or The Mother of the Lamb, Maestro Jose Angeles Martinez leads his band in this performance. I hope you enjoy it and receive our warmest regards from Tlacochahuaya, a picturesque town in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.
