TLB Mallorca: From unfinished crust leather to a custom spectator patina

Thrilled to have a chance to work on this brilliantly crafted pair by TLB Mallorca. They have been one of my favorite new brands. Exceptional quality and a true bargain at the price point. If you have not checked them out you owe it to yourself to do so!
This is the 135 model on Velazquez last from the Artista line, custom ordered in unfinished crust leather.

I gave these a custom spectator style patina for a client based off of an image of a Saint Crispin shoe he sent me. Quite an intimidating undertaking...trying to duplicate a St. Crispin shoe, but I am happy with the outcome.
I used a number of different dyes by Fiebing for the color, my new cream polishes from Boot Black (awesome and another brand you should check out), neutral cream by Angelus, Bick 4 conditioning lotion and mirrorgloss wax by Saphir. All excellent products!

Mike, excellent work. It was great seeing how you created the Patina. Couldn't be happier with them. Didn't wear them this summer. I am getting a bespoke outfit to wear with them for next summer. I'll send you pics when I break them out for sure. Thank you again for such great work. Definitely a pleasure working with you on these.

How much does this custom shoe cost?

@@kennethhenderson5098 I typically charge $140 for a custom patina with mirror shine. The shoes from TLB are $360 range.

Well, not entirely one of a kind since I was making these based off of a Saint Crispin shoe image but I did my own take on it....so yeah lets go with one of a kind....that sounds better :)

Thanks man. It's been too long. I meant to take a few weeks off and then just didn't have motivation to do the video editing. Finished this video and it didn't take too long so I'll get back on it. Lots of content filmed just needing editing and to post it 👍

Do you need to use acetone on crust leather? Havent seen that done before

Excellent question and I actually spoke about it in the video but it was getting long so edited it out. I don't think it's entirely necessary but think about just the oils on your hands etc and what else may have contacted the leather from the factory. I could see a few smudges and shiny spots etc on them and wanted it completely clean before dying. Maybe it is overkill but I did just a quick once over with acetone ...not a real strip 👍.

Yer back! Nice job on those TLBs. I don't really like "half-hunting" split toes because the apron looks way too small but the patina you gave them is beautiful.

@@mbshoedoc I recently bought a pair of pale beige sneakers and treated them with several applications of saddle soap, Saphir Renovateur and neutral shoe polish and they took on a pearly patina that would look great on the undyed part of your TLBs.

Yes the client was able to buy an unfinished pair. Not sure if they will still do it but they might.

Ok shoe people got a question for you. Recently received my pair of TLB's and of course the fit is fantastic. My only issue is a good sized blood vein running through the left upper. Not the vamp or cap but left upper on the inside. Of course Toni was very gracious and said I could exchange if it bothered me. In all honesty it does but I also feel a little OCD and petty over the hastle of an exchange. Has this come upnfor any of you? Thoughts on the matter?

Neutral...just means no color to it. I forget what I used... Carmina, boot black, or Angelus. They all work well.

Are crust leathers veg tan?

Great question and generally speaking I would say yes. The leather is tanned just not dyed. I searched and found this: Crust leather is the term applied to leather, which is dried after tanning but has not yet been dyed. In the case of chrome-tanned leather, this is known as "chrome crust" and, for vegetable-tanned leather, as "veg crust". I've not heard those terms used before myself and am assuming by default all these crust pairs are veg crust.

@@mbshoedoc That makes sense. Chrome tanned leather always has a blueish tint that this leather doesn't, which was what stirred my curiosity in the first place.
