I'm extremely impressed at your cleverness to make something so complicated. You should be working in the SPX industry, more so Stan Winston's creature department.
Holy cow. Just dang. You have so much dedication to your craft! I love it! :D That tail/ spines and the translucent jaw stretchy stuff looks so real! What a process! Great job!!!!
I am in love with this! This movie is my life and this queen alien sculpture u made is beyond breath taking! I am soo jealous! You rock dude! Seriously talented!
you should make the power loader and recreate the fight scene!!! This is amazing by the way. Makes me want to try something like this. You sir are amazing!!
@WaylonHarold I'm not terribly familiar with praetorians, but if they're that much like the queen, I'd say some highlights of blue would be good. Maybe not as much as the queen has, but some to get the relationship. Good work on coming up with a more unique idea.
Almost all of the aliens movie is based on H.R. Giger art. I always thought the queen in the movie was a bit top heavy and puppetty. The hot glue effects are great.
@Dragonstud About 10 feet tall. At her maximum height, yeah, the queen can be about 14-16 feet tall. However, with her torso and head aligned parallel to the ground, it makes her less tall. Standing upright with her head crest pointing up adds the few feet of that size.
@freedo333 Plaster strips have more strength than newspaper mache for such a purpose. It would take several layers of paper mache to get anywhere near "strength", which might have added more weight as well.
@TheMistakenhero For the best budget option, probably take some cardboard and cover it with newspaper mache and paint it. You can use cheap clay to add teeth. A good paint job would add a lot to it.
Really nice work!!! I love the materials you used. This will inspire alot of young artists. Do you plan on putting her on display anywhere in the future?
Wow, that's quite something you have there. It turned out looking great especially for the price budget and timing. It's good to see someone have a passion and acting upon it. Have you thought about using wires to support her from the ceiling?
Did you ever thought of making a living out of this? Seriously, this looks like a pro action figure from an actual movie... Good job! O just LOVE the DIYish style you have... Makes me think i can do it too! Or not...
Could you imagine walking in one night completely wasted and forgetting your passion, turn the corner and see that in the corner. I'd probably shit on the spot. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing something like this done showcasing "Knifehead" from The Pacific Rim.
@WaylonHarold Depending on what you do to protect it, keeping it in a good location, latex can last a good while. I put some tire shine spray over the top of mine. I have just the PS3, yeah.
@adamtlee Yeah, you just have to find a good source to buy them from. eBay has good prices for big bulk boxes. Her size is big, but luckily her limbs are thin, so that cuts down the surface area.
I'd love to build something like this, but, alas, the only place I could really keep it would be in the garage, and my wife would be none too pleased. haha Which leads me to my question: what did you ultimately end up doing with this thing? I mean, did you store it, display it, or what!?
How do you think the foamboard would hold up outdoor with some hinging for movement ? I have assembled a head in foam, then covered in 2 part clear epoxy which worked out pretty good. However, mine weighs about 400lbs with all the lifting cylinders, regulators, switches and stuff. The foam board seems like a great way to get the awesome detail you achieved. Dude, seriously, awesome job.
@DanteThirteen I have thought about that and might do it for displaying it at a later time. But if I ever have to transport it and display it somewhere else, it'll still be good to have a portable support.
I want to know on how to make the head step by step :) a life-size just the head mainly so i can put it up in my living room as a center piece or on my ceiling near my tv as a trophy :) but i might use some fiber glass resin and thin it down to spray it on for a extra support to it :)
@Kachukeland It may not be that boxy, it it hard to find a good picture of the whole thing, but it does seem that the inner mouths are generally that shape. Having the corners filled out would have helped a lot though, definitely.
LOL at the torso stabbing action! That's an incredible statue! (my only criticism is the boxy tongue. It doesn't seem to look right, Is that accurate?)
i havea suggestion for support, instead of putting that ugly pvc support(NO offence) you could make the tail stronger and let the queen be support by the tail and legs
This is awesome! SO awesome! And it ONLY took you two weeks?! I have a couple of questions, though. What do you do with the things you create after they're done? Do you display them somewhere or do you dismantle and store them?
@cfrend Best answer: I'm off of school for the summer, tried to apply for a part-time summer job but no one was hiring. I'm pretty stable financially anyway, thanks to school grants and such, so I had time to kill. I wanted to do something productive with that time. My aunt shows real interest in my works and thinks I might be able to make a "portfolio" of it. I'd like to think it's a good waste of my time.
@thedevo01 Nothing to be "saddened" about. Cameron would be the first to tell you he based 'Aliens' on the model of the war/action movie. Just happens to be set in space/the future. just as Scott based 'Alien' on the haunted house/horror movie model. Stan Winston Studio created the queen based on Cameron's designs. Yes, Giger designed the original 'Alien', but he can no more claim to have designed the queen, then Henry Ford can claim to have designed the Mustang by building the model-t.
awesome, man, it crossed my mind to do a life size alien queen, but, i just dont have the room ware i live, i am building a large alien queen model at moment going to stand bout 3 foot tall, thats how i came a cross your vid looking for ideas and reference, im just using card and mount board and anny thing i can find in my scrap box :P i have been hoping in futuer to do a life size Alien warrior but its just having the cash, may be some thing you can lay your skill to. il catch up one day.
couldnt you have sharpen the gluesticks with an exacto knife and then burn the rough edges with a candle? or that didnt work either? maybe resins then painted with a pearl type coat of paint? it soooo damn good though lol
@thedevo01 When I say "designed by James Cameron", I'm (obviously) referring to the Alien Queen, which was, in fact, designed by Cameron. Giger only worked on Alien and Alien 3. And yes, genre classification can be in debate for movies; Alien is a science fiction, but also a thriller/horror. Aliens is definitely an action movie at least as much as it is science fiction.
@thedevo01 Okay, let's refine your argument a bit then. If I create a text based poster design using the typeface Helvetica, I don't get design credit, Max Miedinger does, because he designed the typeface?
@digitalcos So you're saying that if you took a picture of a graffiti on the wall, and separate the letters digitally, then put them in different order to write your own name, then YOU are the designer of the work? Would you say that it is your piece of work, when the guy who painted that probably developed that style through years? If yes, then I'm sorry, I refuse to react to anything else you have to say.
allso, i must ad, what do u do for a job, if u dont do stuff like this then u really should, i mean just work up a portfolio of your crations, and try work on som origonal ideas to, sent them off to compinies working in tv/film or plays doing special effects :P
