I thought it was long past time I did a proper overview of all the DVD releases for the 80's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated Series, especially since I never even did an update showing I'd completed the set! Plus there have been a number of re-release/re-packagings since my last update many moons ago, so it was high time to update the Disambiguation as well.

11:58 The first 2 discs are actually a side-season that takes place in between episodes 1 & 2 of season 4. IDK why they bundled it with season 7.

Basically because they didn't release it earlier. That side season was kind of in "limbo" for a while when the original DVD releases were coming out. Some kind of rights issues, maybe? No idea. Anyway, by the time they sorted out whatever the issue was, they were prepping Season 7 so they just slapped 'em all on there. I feel like that storyline probably should have just been given its own standalone release of some kind, then we could just slot it in between the correct seasons. Oh well, a bit of disc swapping to watch in order is better than not having the episodes at all!

This is probably widely known, but Chuck Lorre, creator of The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men wrote the turtles theme

kello mellow - I just purchased that all-in-one plastic (basic) box set. It cost me 37.99, although I think the original price was a lot higher...maybe. I purchased some of those individual seasons that had very distinctive packaging that was inconsistent. I don’t like either release, but I am happy that I finally have every episode of the original TMNT 80’s cartoon in one package.

The season 3 rerelease/reissue just uses the same exact volume DVDs that were released before, including the same trailers, and the season 4 episode at the very end.

I know, all the sets are like that. They only ever did one set of discs and every re-release has just been a repackage of those exact same discs.

12:24 On the North American DVD of Season 7, the case is the same size as the Season 4 one, and the discs are separated by trays.

The version of Season 2 I have (bought in 2014) has the "Volume Two" cover but the disc says Season Two

Interesting, I know they've repackage and re-released them several times. And both are technically correct, as Volume 2 is the entirety of Season 2. Odd they didn't change the packaging to match for that version though.

7:31 I have that version too, but I don't keep the box in with the slipcover because of how thick it is and it wouldn't fit on the shelf.

That was awesome Sean. :) I measured the pizza box case with one of the season 7 cases (with the figure) and those boxes are slightly larger, about 1 standard DVD case larger then the pizza box, but you were close. ;) Apparently the season 3 complete set is duplicates of the four volumes, so chances are it may actually still have that 1st episode from Season 4, but that's only an assumption at this point. Still great video Sean and you certainly have a pair of cute feet. :D Oh and I guess you'll remember to watch the Vacation in Europe side season after watching the first episode of Season 4 if you're going to watch the episodes in chronological order. ;)

***** Just wondering have you seen the episode Plan 6 to Outer Space Sean? If not, I'm going to provide you with a bit of a tiny spoiler. At the end of the episode, the Turtles win the vacation in Europe, for some undisclosed reason, but that means that episode took place before that vacation arc. For some reason it wasn't aired or even made until around 1993 when season 7 was airing. Meaning 3 years had passed since the Turtles announced their vacation win. I'm surprised that you didn't know or forgot about this as it is a well known fact that the side season was misplaced. Even the AVGN mentioned this.

***** It was weird that they left it that long to actually air this story arc. Of course it didn't help that Lionsgate insisted on distributing the episodes in broadcast order and not chronological order. In fact the season 5 set has the episodes in the wrong order, again according to the AVGN. So they didn't do too well a job with that. Of course having episodes missing didn't help much either. Lionsgate overall had some very odd marketing decisions. In Australia they actually had season 4 released as 3 volumes (7-9) with 13 episodes a piece on them and no the Vacation side season is not included on those as I have Volume 7 from Australia thinking that it did, plus it's in NTSC and not PAL, which makes it even more weirder, but I'm going of track. Overall Lionsgate did try their best, even I they did wind up making tonnes of mistakes, at least all 193 episodes have been released in North America finally. :)

I purchased, back in 2009 or 2010, season 5 but I returned it because the episodes were out of order, also, episodes were missing. I found out afterwards that those episodes were on a different set and season 5 did indeed have 18 episodes

Well that was silly, especially since that set is literally the only way to get those episodes (or one of the multitude of repackages of the same discs). Hope you re-purchased it at some point!

@@zaranyzerak No. I never did repurchased it. I went online and after I found out that season 5 actually didn’t have those episodes, I went back to toys r us - where I had bought it- but they weren’t in stock.

I have almost all of these sets myself, Sean. All i am missing is season 4 and 8-9 of the "Red Sky" seasons. Also my copy of season seven is a little different from yours, mine has a thicker case style with the flipper disc holders.

I found it a good thing, that the tmnt were somewhat darker in the 90s. That decade was becoming more of a time for "animated series", rather than just "cartoons" .

Yep, I agree. They had to change with the times. Pretty much inevitable when a show runs that long, literally passing through several different eras of television.

14:09 The show has shorter seasons because it was also a Saturday Morning show when the show was picked up by CBS. That is why I didn't watch the show as much when the show moved to CBS, it's because I thought the show ended when the syndicated run of the show ended around 1991. I found out around 1994 or 1995 that the show moved to CBS after watching an episode. At that time I didn't have much interest in watching the show because I didn't know the show continued on CBS in 1991. If I would have known that, I would have still been interested in the show. Hopefully, I will watch the episodes I missed all these years when I watch more episodes on DVD.

I just saw a re release of the complete series set of the original series at Wal-Mart, however it is in one of those large plastic cases with the flipper trays though the discs are likely stacked on top of each other. If i had to guess it is likely just the same exact DVDs as the separate releases just stuck into one set.

@@justinmiddleton8818 Yeah. 1 Thing I Found Interesting is That Each Stacked Disc Hole Fits 2 Discs. The Final Hole Can Also Fit 2 Discs But Bu That Point There's Only 1 Disc Left so, If You Wanna Make Some Kind of Bonus Disc or Cowabunga Classics, You Can Fit it In The Case. Out of The Extras on The "Cowabunga Classics", 1/5 Of Them Aren't on The Season 4 or 10 DVDs (at least according to the back) So, I Was Able to Put it in Since I Owned That DVD Before I Got The Box Set

I have the exact same sets except for the first 3 seasons. I have 1 & 2 in a region 2 set and 3 in a complete region 1 set.

Very interesting look at the original TMNT TV show. I watched this back int he day when it aired on TV and haven't seen it since. I will rent some episodes off Amazon and see if i still get enjoyment out of them then get the Complete Series Box Set.

Are the episodes from the "4 never before seen episode" dvd included in the giant Purple Complete Collection set?

Yes. The Complete Collection is the exact same discs from these individual season sets relabeled with the "Complete Collection" labelling. But the contents of the discs are identical, it's just a repackage of the same discs.

I am pretty sure that due to how successful that turtles cartoons are these days that the set isn't out of print any more or ever will be again. I mean I got this set for my birthday which was about two days after you put up this video.

Sweet! It's about dang time Sean! :D :P From the looks of how you put the letter in to the video it seems like you discovered what I have as well and that is Sony Vegas color correction makes all the difference in the world for how much better the C920 can actually look it takes away all that whitewashing that the codec does in the quick capture. I probably actually should re-show my collection now that I have a new good computer and can do 1080P video again since just like you the last time I did the collection was incomplete anyway. If I did would you mind if I downloaded this episode and talked over your overhead views because we have almost every same edition and you know that it's harder for me to do closer up stuff because of my condition. I'm just sitting down and having lunch and marathoning the rest of your episodes that I need to catch up on. I'm really really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the documentary! Here's to catching up soon my friend it's been far too long! By the way when you get a second can you double check and make sure that I'm still subscribed? Hey there, Z. Didn't know if you're aware of this or not but the 2003 series is FINALLY getting a complete series release here along with the Turtles Forever film, and it's actually releasing everywhere next month on the 25th. This is such exciting news, because boy did Nick/Viacom.etc take their sweet time getting to this point and ever since those lackluster repackaged compilation discs they did like half a decade ago (Some of which were more or less reissues of many of the same single disc volumes that 4Kids and FUNi initially put out) it looked for so long like they weren't going to release anything more after that. But no, finally they got their act together and it's coming. I'm glad cause this means i don't have waste time trying to track down those gazillion single discs and season sets from the original release timeline and best of all not spend a fortune getting them, especially given some are ridiculously rare and overpriced second hand these days. Also, fingers crossed that Turtles Forever is the extended version in proper 16:9. Not the inferior TV cut in non anamorphic widescreen that was released as the one single disc a decade plus ago which you famously ranted about.

@zaranyzerak Ah, so i see. Well i for one am VERY excited about this. For the longest time i've wanted to get the 2003 series since i got the full set of the classic '87-'96 series but there's no way in hell i was going to spend a fortune and ungodly amount of time and energy hunting for all those OOP discs from over a decade plus ago. Thankfully with this i can have the whole series in one convenient package. Glad to see the '03 series finally given it's due with a proper release.

Just a note that is in regard to the fourth season specifically, as the Vacation in Europe "side season" is clearly meant to go after the opening episode Plan Six from Outer Space where the turtles and Master Splinter win the all expense paid trip at the end which sets up that arc. For whatever reason, despite being produced and completed at some point prior to or around Season 4's first of two runs which did actually air in other countries with that season proper in the correct sequence it was held over here in the States until being aired on the USA network in 1993 a good three years late alongside the fourteen episodes which comprise the seventh season. This of course was a rather big gaping hole in the chronological makeup of season 4 because of that delay and this is why that set is put with season seven on the DVD's despite actually being produced and intended to air with the former. There's no other logical place within the series for them to go, they clearly are meant to be placed between Plan Six and Turtles of the Jungle. Lionsgate really should have placed them in with the Season 4 set, as that's where they aired in pretty much everywhere other than here in the U.S.

Because the boxset wasn't out. I collected these as they were released. The boxset has no new content, it's just a repackage so I saw no reason to double dip. Also you miss out on a TON of package art getting the boxset, I much prefer having the additional art and slipcovers. Pretty sure I explain all that in the video...

This show I found to get slightly less enjoyable the more episodes they made, Absolutely love the first season, 2nd season is great, 3rd season is good and so on. I only have the first season on DVD, I avoided Season 2 and 3 because of your previous videos pertaining to their cramming 12/13 episodes per disc.

@@smoothst9303 Yeah... especially when the animation wasn't animated digitally (it was animated with traditional cell animation) and thus had to be filmed onto reel-to-reel filmstrip, which partially hid/obscured the film grain that always shows up on reel-to-reel films when the video is in lower resolutions. Now, if this was done with the *_*2003*_*_ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles_ animated T.V. series on DVD, that would be a different story.

Zaranyzerak if you want the complete series of the 2003 show you will need season 1 part 1 season 1 part 2 season 2 part 1 season 2 part 2 then from Australia season 3 box 1 season 3 box 2 then from Australia season 4 box 1 season 4 box 2 then ninja tribunal from the USA and USA fast forward DVD sets then from Australia again back to the sewers volume 1 and volume 2 then the uk DVD of turtles forever

Yes, it is the complete story of Planet of the Turtleoids. Season 10 fully completes the set with all the episodes that were previously missing.

My brother helped me get the all 10 seasons that came in the turtle van long time ago I still have I watch seasons 1-6 a number of times including right now 'March 2024' I don't watch seasons 7-10 anymore because of the changes I know Rob Paulsen and Townsend Coleman uses Facebook and Twitter Townsend is more for seeing what other people posts than posting 'same for me' but he posts at times and the actors of the show is nice and if I remember still sound the same as they did for the show. I wish Nickelodeon treated the show better the short time they shown it on DirecTV a few years ago they only shown a few episodes/shown out of order/shown when people might been asleep/didn't have a 80s-90s style commercial with any of the voice actors of the show/took it back off of DirecTV I know about Paramount but I don't use that. I know ya don't like so many episodes on the same dvds but I do I wish all episodes was in order/not have previews before the show start but that don't really bother me. I watch my dvds of the Mario shows a lot and when I do I watch ya YT vids of the dvds of them.

Just picked up the cheaper version of the complete series release. What a nightmare release. Packaging arrived damage, paper insert was ripped, discs double stacked on trays. Great way to scratch a disc

Ouch, sorry to hear that. Glad I stuck with the old season sets... I think the original Turtle Van Complete Series set had them in a book of disc trays. Maybe you can get it replaced with a non-damaged version?

Oh... I don't like the idea of 13 episodes (that are like what ? 30 minutes long ?) being shoved in one disc. Wouldn't that lead to alot of compression/interlacing issues ?

They're about 22 minutes each without commercials. And yes, there are some minor compression issues with those discs. Still quite watchable, but definitely a lower bitrate as a result and it shows at times. Alas, it's the only version out there. Every release has used the same discs.

hey Sean, great TMNT collection! I came across the complete series set at walmart during boxing week but didn't have the money to buy it at the time. I'll pick it up if I see it again. I recently started making videos of my DVD/Blu-ray collection so check out my channel, thanks!
