#TMNT #MutantMayhem #EasterEggs
Not only are we going to be breaking down this movie, but we’re also going to take a closer look at the secret alien villain hiding in plain sight. That awesome post credit scene teasing the turtles next big shell-cracking baddie. Plus the heartwarming coming of age story that’s at the core of this film. [clip]
What makes this version of TMNT so unique is that they really focused on the teenage aspect of these characters. By casting actual teenagers to play the turtles and allowing the actors to riff off of one another-you really feel the genuine childlike nature of these four brothers. [clip]
You can feel their innocence and nativity. You can feel their longing to not only fit in and be a part of the bigger world, but to find out who they really are and what their purpose is. A struggle we can all relate to because we’ve all been teenagers.
Doug: I haven’t, I’m only three.
Yeah but that’s like 30 in manager years.
Doug: Oh okay okay.
So the animation of this movie is stellar, and it’s being compared to the Across the Spider-Verse films-even though they have totally different conceits. Production designer Yashar Kassi revealed to Inverse that since the movie was about teenagers-they wanted to draw it like they were teenagers.
Yashar said: We…infused every aspect of the movie with teenage energy. This wasn’t easy; trying to draw like teenagers meant drawing like someone in their first art class ever, or who’s doodling in the corner of your notebook.
And director Jeff Rowe told Movie Web, “We really commit and take these big swings towards ideas that are misshapen, flawed, and ignore the formal principles of art. It's trying to emulate teenagers, the way they think, draw, and make art before they've been taught to make better art. It's just a raw, unfiltered expression.”
And he told Gizmodo that the film;s aesthetic was greatly inspired by the patterns and colors of the late 80s and early 90s…especially the films of Spike Lee, and the underground New York Hip hop of that era. It was a way to use 8@0s nostalgia he said, without having the turtles say cowabunga over and over.
So the movie starts in 2008 and we meet Baxter Stockman, voiced by Genecarlo Esposito. [clip]
Stockman has developed a mutagen that mutates animals into talking humanoid versions of themselves.
It’s important that the movie reinvented the turtle's origin and ties it to Baxter Stockman. Baxter is a lonely outcast, who simply wants to belong. This is just like the turtles themselves, and the other mutants.
The opening sequence, when the TCRI troops storm his lab, is filmed like a claustrophobic horror movie-almost like the movie alien.
Now in the comics and cartoons, Stockman mutates himself into the villain known as Superfly. In the comics and origin cartoon, Baxter Stockman was a ride on Dr Brumble, Jeff Goldblum’s character form the Fly that mashes up his DNA with a fly’s. This new adaptation seems to have established the rule that only animals can become mutated, and not humans-hence why stockman is not a superfly-he’s his creator.
Superfly is voiced by rapper Ice Cube-and he agreed to play the part as soon as he heard the name-because it's an homage to a classic 1970s Blaxploitation film [trailer clip with title].
But in this turtle-universe, Stockman isn’t Superfly, he’s his creator. As well as the creator of a plethora of other mutated animals.
These include Bebop and Rocksteady, voiced by Seth Rogen and John Cena. These characters first appeared in the TMNT animated series back in 1987. Originally they were human henchmen that were turned into a mutant warthog and rhino. And yes, Seth Rogen is yet again playing a warthog. [clip]
Now in the comics and cartoon, Bebop and Rocksteady did the bidding of the turtles biggest foe, The Shredder. A little later we’ll talk about Shredder’s history, his brief cameo in the post credits scene, and what his role will be in the sequel.

Dude!! 🤣 You're not kidding!!.....(born in 89') Ice Cube has ALWAYS been a favorite of mine ever since I was LITERALLY a toddler during the early/mid-90s.....My mother would ALWAYS tell stories about little ass me, singing and dancing in front of the TV to the music video for "It was a good day"..... ANY and EVERYTIME it would come on!! 😂.....Watching this new TMNT, I was pretty amazed with how much Cube absolutely KILLED his role as Supafly!! He pulled off the whole vibe and voice of the character soo fucking well LOL....I thought Supafly was actually BADASS and kind of scary as hell!.....There was only maybe 1 or 2 instances, knowing it was Ice Cube, where I couldn't help but laugh and cringe a little bit at a couple of the lines haha.....Overall this movie was fucking great tho!! EASY 9.5/10 in my book

Just a side note the movies that they are watching are not Bruce Lee films they're actually watching Shaw Brothers films which mainly featured Gordon Liu the Master Killer 36 Chambers films and Jackie Chan in which is what got him his start from the Drunken Master Series, eagle claw and a lot of others.

Extra Easter eggs I caught: The skin color for the turtle most closely matches the original comics look, where they all had slightly different shades of green. This also happened in the 2012 show and was taken to an extreme like in 2018's Rise. Like Mikey being short, Raph was physically larger than his brothers, but to a lesser extreme than Rise of the TMNT. Raph's overhead bandanna was first shown in the Michael Bay movies and replicated in Rise of the TMNT. (Also Leo's body shape most closely resembled the old cartoon's) In the 2012 show, the turtles eyes turned white any time they were serious. 2012 and 2018 April were also both teenagers. 2018 April became a journalism major in college. One of the buildings in the beginning had a giant "Laird" neon sign. April attended Eastman High School. Splinter used kung fu movies to teach the turtles how to fight in Rise of the TMNT. (Except in that version he was the Bruce Lee parody, Lou Jitsu, who was actually a trained ninja turned movie star) Donatello is wearing a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure hoodie. Chris Evans voiced Casey Jones in the 2007 film. Monday Gecko said "cowabunga" to Mikey first at the bowling alley. Mondo Gecko and Mickey were close friends in the 2012 version of the show. The bowling alley was like Pleasure Island in Pinocchio, where the turtles saw the extreme opposite of their structured, restricted life. In the 2012 show, the Utrom and Krang were two factions of the same species, the latter being a warlike offshoot with a hive mind. Splinter fighting on the chair was very similar to Jackie Chan's "fight with what's around you" kung fu style. Donnie also wore a purple hoodie in Rise. He also connected with the mega nerds at April's high school in that show (although they turned out to be criminal hackers and thieves)

I feel like Shredder in the sequel will be more like a Kraven The Hunter type bounty hunter who's hunting down every mutant in the city for TCRI and showing how formidable he truly is when not relying on the Foot Clan or other mutants to do his dirty work. I really hope that's the direction they take for the character and really gives us a memorable Shredder that relies on his skills and cunning to take down the turtles with no remorse. Im have a theory that in the sequel they reveal that Splinter before he became an ally rat actually had an owner hypothetically Hamato Yoshi, and he was the only person who cared about Splinter before he became hated as an ally rat. Thus Splinter would have never told his son's about it because it was too traumatic and never wanted to burden his son's of his past nor did he ever want them to face Shredder

Krang isn't technically an Utrom, but a brain creature who lost its actual body inspired by the race in the comics. I think both come from Dimension X. In one of the newer series, the Utroms were renamed Krangs which caused further confusion, but at the end of the day they might as well be one and the same.
@jabberwock6
@jabberwock6 11 месяцев назад

@canaanmorgan4323
@canaanmorgan4323 11 месяцев назад
They weren’t renamed in 2012 tmnt so they were still the utrom. It was a utrom scientist named kraang that found the mutagen and developed mind powers and he mutated from it and he is kraang prime in the series. He then enslaves most of the utrom making them a kind of hive mind and they all call themselves the kraang and their species kinda takes on that name and most other races know them as the kraang like the triceratons and the turtles. It’s not until later in the series where we meet a few utrom and find out that’s the “Kraang” it’s a cool twist on the kraang in my opinion. Taking from the 1980 series where kraang is just evil and his race is the utrom. Hence why I’m tmnt 2012 there are more kraang and in the 1980s series it’s just him

The comic book you show at 4:16 is the 1991 "TMNT Adventures" one, Leatherhead first appeared in the "Tales of the TMNT" series (1988), but it's funny how both were issue #8. Just a small note! Also, that fight montage is set to Blackstreets "No Diggity", not "Yo Diggity" (12:17). Love the video though!

I have a feeling that we’ll get more ninja action in the sequel and follow-up show. That was one of the complaints I had about the movie as well, but now that I think about it, this movie focused on the “Teenage Mutant” part of TMNT, so maybe the sequel will focus on the “Ninja Turtles” part. Plus, with Shredder on the way, they’ll definitely need to level up in skill in order to stop him.

Other things I noticed: Wingnut is usually shown with organic arms and mechanical wings, but this version flips that… which actually makes more sense for a mutant bat. Mondo Gecko has a tiny skateboard strapped to the tip of his tail, just like the toy from the original line. Also toy-related, the brownish-orange color of the turtles’ weapons is a dead ringer for the accessories’ color from the original toy line, had to be intentional. The baddie uses an arcade to tempt the turtles to join, much like the Foot Clan used one to attract teens in the first live action movie.

Shredder should be broken into two movies. I think he shouldnt kill splinter right away but instead explore the backstory of Shredder and Splinter. Have a similar thing happen like in the original movie where shredder kidnpas and tortures splinter and at the end a roof top face off where a injured Splinter joins in after shredder proves too difficult for the turtles. Shredder kills splinter then and sends the message to the turtles they are no match and leaves setting up the third movie where Turtles are trying to find themselves after the loss of splinter as well as figuring out how to go into fighting against someone like the shredder.

I noticed some subtle callbacks to the tmnt2 movie besides the vanilla ice song. One is splinter fighting while rolling around in an office chair at the tcri lab just like the turtles do in tmnt2, also the choice to have the turtles carried to manhattan in a rope net that looks just like the one they were captured in in tmnt2 before splinter shoots an arrow and frees them. Also at one point in the new movie April is buried in rubble and her arm pops up and she brings her hand down just like Super Shredder in tmnt2 after he’s crushed by the imploding docks. (There’s also a similar shredder hand popping out of a rubble pile at the end of the 1990 tmnt)

That Spider-Man reference was on point. That’s exactly what I thought of when everyone started throwing crap out the windows onto super Duper fly. Not all the humans were riding skateboards. The only the ones that were helping Mondo gecko were riding skateboards because he is on a skateboard. One question, though, why did super Duper fly? Have narwhals have a hand? Narwhals are not found in that area of New York, or in the zoo that they fell in.

Much sadness for no mention of the montage set to the He-Man version of “What’s Up?” 😢 Otherwise, GGs! I was bummed too of how they changed splinter. Learning from a VHS < Epic rivalry with Shredder

I had no idea the voice actors were actual teenagers, still this movie was so good. But it's also neat to learn all the things Ryan talks about in this video. For a sequel I could see them expand on Splinter's origin and be connected to Shredder which will be neat.
@tompatchak8706
@tompatchak8706 11 месяцев назад
And I am DB page they state that Seth Rogen wanted to bring all the actors in this group, so they could play in a rip off each other, while filming are recording their sessions. And you can tell that when the guys are together in the film that they’re more comfortable with each other because of that.

+1 easter egg: The radioactive storage unit heist is like the opening scene of The Dark Knight. Very similar first shot of a building & camera movement; tense music; well planned robbery; robbers who talk/joke about the mysterious boss; innocent looking getaway car.

Bonus easter eggs: original TMNT creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird are referenced. April goes to Eastman High, and they eat pizza on a roof with the sign 'The Laird'.

finally got to see this last nite. as a hard-core TMNT fan ages 5-12, I enjoyed it soooo much, even the liberties taken with the "canon", origin, etc. it was just a rad movie. probably a rare tangible format buy for me.

additional comment! I love seeing the art work of Ken Mitcheroney splayed across the screen. he was probably my first favorite artist as a kid, 💯 because of the Archie TMNT series. I know, it serves to illustrate the origins of the characters, but I still love it. thanks, ScreenCrush!

I felt like the side-shot fight scenes were a reference to Old Boy (and later the Daredevil series) with its hallway fight. There were several kung fu/martial arts film references in the right scenes

Being a tmnt fan since the early 90’s, I actually didn’t miss the ninjitsu background of the turtles. I feel like the emphasis on the teenage aspect as well as the great writing and voice acting really filled out the movie.

I really hope we get to see Krang's Android body in similar fashion as it was in the original cartoon, because that design is so wickedly spooky and goofy at the same time. Especially in the episode where the android grows to the size of a godzilla lol. And also, we really do need to see the Technodrome too, and I mean the original one with the menacing eye ball -- not some weird michael bay bs.

The movie was really good. Animation was fantastic and the storytelling was okay, too. Really don't mind what they did with April since they movie is supposed to focus on the Turtles. The one thing that somehow irked me was the way the ooze works. The ooze was dangerous because it affected both humans and animals. Some of the mutants' characters come from what they were as humans and the struggles after the mutation. Still, it doesn't take away from how much fun this flick is! Really want to see the next!

Having grwon up with the original 80's cartoon and the first live action movies, this movie was one of my most anticipated movies of this year, with Across the Spiderverse and Barbenheimer, and goddamn, it didn't disappoint ! It was everything I wish a Ninja Turtles movie would be, and then some. Agreed with the fact that doing away with the Splinter/Hamato Yoshi lore did raise my eyebrow, but seeing how Splinter (voiced by Jackie Chan) taught his turtles and himself how to fight by watching old Jackie Chan movies (and later demonstrating it with the lab fight by fighting in his typical props improv style) was a super welcome meta moment ! Jackie/Splinter definitely was one of the biggest highlights of this movie to me. Glad to see he's not just a glorified cameo like in the Kung Fu Panda saga (which, btw, also included Seth Rogen as a VA, so these 2 go way back ! Can't wait for TMNT 2 and see who Seth is gonna cast Jack Black for !) BTW, love how you were already filming back in the days when you beat the OG TMNT game, this game was hard as fuck ! The seeds of a future coming RU-vid star.

Wild that you brought up the original 8 bit TMNT game but if you heard closely, there was a remixed variation of the game's title screen theme during one of the battle scenes.... I gotta watch it again in order to pinpoint exactly when.

Other anime reference include but are not limited to : Donatello's Smart PhoneCover wich include : Mikasa Ackerman from AOT , an EVA from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Alphone Elric from FMAB. Donnatello's purple hoodie is a merch item from the popular manga serie ; Jojo's Bizzare Adventure. Donnatello's Stick has a sticker of Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen on it. In the School on the billboard there is an appliance form with a big picture of Deku from My Hero Academia.
