Thanks for watching! Lake Superior is a fascinating lake and the diversity amongst the Lake Trout within it is surreal.
Keep in mind, this is from a fisherman's perspective and we are not fisheries biologists. We may have said a few things that a biologist may not agree with, but most of this comes from our experiences and understanding. If you have anything to add, we would love to hear it in the comments below!
One aspect we could elaborate on is that Siscowet still use their air bladders, but they may not need to rely on them as much as other fish, or other species of Lake Trout do due to their fat composition. These fish are much fattier than all other species of Freshwater fish, and the increase in fat reduces the dependency on their air bladders when coming up from great depths. Yes its still used, but these fish, when caught in cold water and reeled up slowly, do often survive when you release them. (aside from maybe a smaller one here and there).

Wow, an absolute masterpiece of a video. I’ve been fascinated with species of fish (and creatures) that live in the deepest parts of Lake Superior since I was a little kid. Hitting a spot that looked fishable in 350 feet of water is one thing but having the gull to stay on it and drop a 6oz Bondy on it and have it pay off was incredible to see. Absolutely love this channel. It deserves 20x more subs than it has.

This is seriously the most underrated channel for fishing on RU-vid hands down you consistently put out the most amazingly choreographed and beautiful video content. Maybe people just don’t have the innate draw to Lake Superior like we do. Thanks for putting these out!

one of your best videos yet, i'd drive up to fish with you; I wonder if there are siscowet lakers in Lake Huron, i live in Cheboygan. i think i may have to try and find out i can find 350 feet without having to go very far. this was good, where do you get the big soft plastics?

Releasing lean lake trout caught at 100' on Lake Ontario I burb them releasing some air out before release. If not they strugle some time on a surface before diving. Never saw trout floating long time on a surface after release. You come back to check on them, they are long gone. More important not to touch or injure their gills. Cool video, thanks. Hi Grant! Thank you for putting out such professional quality Lake Superior content for the world to enjoy and learn from. I look forward to your posts with "baited" anticipation. (I especially love the classical music in this video). I am heading to Isle Royale (with my boat) and will be there for over 3 weeks starting June 9th through July 2. You have certainly inspired me to fish deep this trip and can't wait to drop my line into the deeper spots to try to get some of those monster Siscowet Lakers. I am wondering, are you are planning on doing any fishing this year around Isle Royale? If so, come say hi to me as I am working the whole season at the Rock Harbor gas dock! Thanks again for the great content. Please keep it up! Rob D.

Morning Grant, i've been a subscriber for a few years, i really enjoy your videos; this was no different. do you know if there are siscowet trout in any of the other great lakes? i live in Cheboygan, we fish Lake Huron a lot; it'd be fun to find them closer to home. this is the second time i watched this, the first time; i asked the same question, siscowets live anywhere besides Lake Superior?

Amazing video! Once again jealous of your fishery. We will sometimes troll in the evening on flathead lake in 300' fow anywhere from 180 to 220 down for Lakers eating mysis shrimp that come up off the bottom in the evening. Curious who makes that 1st tube you where using?? A 1ounce would be plenty big over here lol. Thanks guys!!

What do you use when trolling for lakers eating mysis? Those buggers are pretty tiny. Do you get any big ones? I've read the big lakers mostly feed on other fish

Yeah its hard to say. As far as we know, only Lake Superior has confirmed Sub Species of Lake Trout. Maybe someone else out there know differently and they will chime in.

Take a look into fish descending devices for your next trip. They are highly effective and actually required for ocean bottum fishing in Oregon now to decrease bicatch mortaility rates. One of these tied on to a spare rod will get those fish right back down to where they are happy.
@patrickirish9427
@patrickirish9427 11 месяцев назад
I'm not sure about siscowet's ability to get back down but I know laketrout unlike most ocean fish are actually able to burp air out of their bladder. If you catch a perch in 100ft of water its eyes are popping when it gets to the surface. A lake trout from that depth is fine because it can adjust like a scuba tank on its way up and down.
@seanbennett7916
@seanbennett7916 9 месяцев назад
I've caught tons of siscowets in 200-250, or 300 feet. Also its like 50% siscowets and 25% leans, 25% redfins. And many have Lambert marks.

17-22 inch can eat normally but 22-28 max you can smoke,but any bigger it too fatty to smoke even.

I believe you are wrong on the shape of the first fish... I think it was bloated. You could clearly see the second fish deflate. If that was "just their build" the second wouldn't have deflated. I haven't caught them over 300', only down to around 260' and most were bloated. You can definitely tell when you clean them...lots of air in there. With a slow retrieve, some burp on the way up, some don't. Just stating my experience. You put out awesome content, love the channel. Great work!
@timberkolodejchuk1389
@timberkolodejchuk1389 Год назад
He is very wrong indeed! The first fish and the 3rd fish did not release air...they were indeed bloated! Those fish aren't super fat....they're filled full of air! And if they are so fatty, they're meat would be orange....bright orange, not white like you said!! This video is loaded with misinformation!!!😂
@patrickirish9427
@patrickirish9427 11 месяцев назад
@timberkolodejchuk1389 The fattiest part of a lake trout is always its belly which always has the whitest meat. The orange colour isn't fat it's from diet.
@paigemay6112
@paigemay6112 3 месяца назад
Yep, that right there is barotrauma from pulling such a small fish up from too deep way too fast. When you catch one big enough that it can actually put up a fight, it takes longer to get them in and they have an opportunity to burp. That poor little thing was just super inflated.
@ericharsvick7421

Wrong the meat range in a wide variety of red pink and orange caught hundreds they are white as well a lot of fun.👍
