Hey thanks heaps for the vid! Wondering about neutered cocker spaniel coats, more specifically blue roan.... If I use a banded Comb daily will I be able to keep the undercoat at bay? I understand the coat does go more wooly like the puppy coat, but surely it shouldn't prevent me from stripping the dead undercoat out? Or does their coat literally stop shedding?? I mostly just want the skin to breath better rather than clipping. Thanks heaps for your expertise!

Hi Bek! It really depends on the dog, so it may be worth trying a banded comb. I have a spayed blue roan Cocker on my books and up until recently I've just been using a Coat King or a banded comb to remove the undercoat and she's looked really great. The owner has now sadly decided to have her clipped, so I doubt I'll get her back to a natural coat again.

@@TheDogGroomingNerd cool! Hopefully I can achieve the same with my Frankie....definitely a shame they want to clip her! With my previous cocker I had as a kid I think that was why he had quite a few skin tags

Skin tags aren't necessarily caused by clipping. 🙂 Spaniels tend to get really lumpy when they get old. Good luck with Frankie's coat!

Is the The Kennel Club's Illustrated Breed Standards: The Official Guide to Registered Breeds 2003 version the same book?

Newer versions have more up to date breed standards etc as they change periodically. Newer versions will also include breeds that have been recognised by the KC since the previous edition

Hi I have a problem that I'm struggling to solve. I have two cocker spaniels, both with really fine smooth hair. I've tried 3 types of clippers now including a professional set. Even when new they struggle to cut. I'm beginning to think that their hair is just too fine. I always bath and dry them before cutting and keep the clippers clean, sharp and oiled. They will cut through my hair very very easily but not the dog's. Any tips / ideas will be greatly appreciated as I can't afford a professional groomer to do the job.

What kind of clippers are you using? Is the coat brushed through before clipping?

Never quote prices since most owners can't tell the difference in a maintained coat and one that hasn't been groomed is a while. Check the nails if they are groomed once a month they won't have long nails. When they say the dog has a few mats be ready for a matted dog that will need to be clipped all the way down.

That's really good advice. I tend to say that any prices I give are rough estimates and can change on the day once we have the dog on the table in front of us.
