There is a huge difference between crawler and a scale rig. For crawlers droop set up. For scalers sprung set up.

When I was racing on road I ran fully extended with 80-100 wt.oil, off road racing about 1/4-1/3 droop with 30-50 wt.oil , a super light weight crawler with a lexan body about 1/4-1/3 droop with just enough oil (10-20wt.) to keep the shocks lubed , on my hard body crawlers I run about 3/4 droop and fill the shocks about 1/2 way with 10-30 wt. oil. On my TF2 I removed internal springs and 1 leaf and fill the shocks about 1/2 with 10-30 wt. oil.

Great information! I am still learning and want to hear what everyone else is doing. So now my plan is to mess around with the shocks and see what is can do. My TRX4 kit is running Brushless, it’s a crawler/basher. It flips when it decelerates to quickly. I may be to firm or to high idk, but fuck it it’s a toy and I need to try something and you guys have given me info! Thanks.

Why does everyone in the RC world have "droop" wrong? Droop, when referring to suspension, is when the suspension is fully extended. Everyone in RC seems to think droop is fully compressed which is backwards.
@BuyitBreakitFixit
@BuyitBreakitFixit 2 года назад
No idea my friend. Colin works at a hobby shop and I assume he knows what he is talking about. He is not an off roader and could have it wrong. Sorry about that. Just trying to help.
@tedwittman2092
@tedwittman2092 Год назад
I work for a shock manufacturer, you are correct "droop" is the suspension extended, as if you lifted the vehicle from the frame and let the wheels hang. Every vehicle on the road has the vehicle's weight sitting on the springs, which compresses them slightly to put them in the center of their travel. If this was not the case, any rebound action of the suspension lifts the tires off the road. RC vehicles are so light this isnt as much of a problem as it would be for your real car or truck. Droop as these guys describe, really means your suspension is more compressed at static, thus less chance of a tire coming off the road and better ability to "droop" into a low spot on rocks or a trail. Hope this helps.

Hi there 👋 I am late to the party, but i just start in this hobby with my first crawler. I have think aboutbto go for longer shock - in my case from 80 to 90 mm, with lighter spring for 80mm shock and 40 rated oil. I want long travel and lower stand. What you think about that, will it work?

I run my trx 4 sport on the yellow springs with no preload 4.19 inch tyers with 9.7oz of weight in each wheel (tyer included in the weight) and stock shock oil and it climbs like a mountain got . I agree Having heavy oil as I found out my self that at some angles the spring won’t have the strength to open up sharply so yes heavy oil a must . CGO is insane as well I only tip over when I push it to ridiculous extremes . Great video 👍🏻and great advice .

I always assumed droop referred to the down travel, basically the opposite of what droop actually means in the crawling world. thx for the vid, I am experimenting with a no-spring setup so the compressed shocks have zero force and the un-loaded shocks have "full droop" but apparently that would be considered "reverse-droop" because they are drooping due to gravity instead of being pushed down via spring. Reverse sociology is the way.

Ive tested 100mm 2 external spring shocks with 20c oil and its just awesome. I did a very big and long event track and had a lot of advantage of the soft shocks. I even have a lot of weight on top like a spare tire and scale bits it 5kg I can even drive over a tire full speed and the shocks absorbs it fully. Have a look at my channel for the shock test.

Old, but still awesome 🙂 Thank you guys. I have scx10 3 Gladiator which I would like to make a crawler...so a scalable crawler. I was think of a drop setup, but not fully using 100 mm Desert Lizards (as the springs are inside). I was thinking getting a little bigger damper 100 mm instead of stock 90 mm. But as I will do a drop setup, it should set similar to stock dampers, but have more travel when needed. I'm still new to the crawler world, so please correct me or give me some feedback. How does it sound? Should I go 110 mm or in a completely different path? 🙂

Thanks for the comment. It really comes down to how you use your rig and how you like it to perform. The stock TRX shocks are a great start, they perform well and are great quality. I would recommend buying a couple different shocks weight oils and just do some experimenting and see what you like. the lighter your rig is the lighter shock fluid you want, well that is my preference. Don't be afraid to come up with your own style on this, as everyone seems to have a different opinion because we all have our own unique driving style.

Good video. I think you were wrong when you said heavy brass parts would effect what kind of shock and spring you want. Most brass parts are on the axle and/or portals, which are unsprung, which would mean the suspension has no effect on them.
