Hey y'all, welcome to our Off Grid channel. We are Justin and Lilly (plus 4), and we are building a house together, as a family, completely off the grid.
After months of work, we finally completed our Pier and Beam foundation, and we are well on our way to completing the floor framing.
The biggest question to answer for each joist is "To Shim Or Not To Shim? All joking aside, it is very important for us to be as accurate as possible at this stage to keep the floor as square and level as possible.
The floor will be 28' x 54', which makes the house just over 1500 square feet.
The joists are 2"x12"x16' long. They are very heavy and unwieldy to move, especially by myself.
We finally got our replacement DJI mini 4 pro camera drone set we can finally took some awesome aerial footage for you at the beginning and end of the video!
Thank God the Dewalt framing nailer was finally working very smoothly. Justin had lots of trouble with the Dewalt 20V Max 30 degree framing nailer. It kept misfiring and getting stuck for seeming no reason but he refuses to use other brands.
We discovered a minor issue where the final beam was too high which was causing the floor to be unlevel.
Of course, Justin took this opportunity to invest in a new tool and debuts his Dewalt 20V max planer. It worked very well and after shaving the beam down a bit the floor was back to level.

So I just finished binge watching your build up to now! You guys are doing amazing! My husband and I are wanting to build a house just like this but half the size (empty nesters). I love when I find people who keep things real and are willing and honest enough to share their mistakes and when things don't go right. Kudos to you for showing them kiddos what hard work is. You have a new fan cheering you on!!! Cheers from Canada

Just thinking. You could have just planed the large beam where the joists were making contact and then trimmed the smaller pieces on the table saw. Anyway, I really enjoy watching your videos. You have something to be very proud of.

Ah coffee...the life-blood of any project! So once your done using the planer, it looks like you have a few more rows to complete, then some blocking and you're finally to sheeting! Once you have a floor, that's when you'll really see things start coming together quickly! Keep up the great work! And thanks for sending the sunshine up here!

Lookin good. That last issue with the pier and beam sucked. Glad you have purchased some good tools. Wished I'd had those when building. Ours was 32x54 less a little inset for a 4x16 porch. Brings back so many memories. We have a basement so everything was on ladders and scaffolding. My dad had just retired and I took the summer off work and we framed and roofed it all... including building our own trusses. Making me tired thinking about it. You are doing a great job. Keep plugging along and enjoy the journey.

Two non carpenter concerns; any snake sightings and I’ve heard gunshots on occasion, I worry about the little ones.
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 6 месяцев назад
1) We have never even seen a single snake on our property...that being said, we know they are out there. 2) There is a range a few miles down the road, so we hear the sounds of freedom every day out here. No reason to be concerned.

Yep, I gave it another try with a brand new pack of nails and it started working much more smoothly. Solar power is still chugging along full steam ahead! Every once in a while we have to run the generator when it rains for more than a day or two straight.

I'm watching how you framed your deck. Why did you overhang your joists over the outside of your beams??? If you'd have installed the rim joists on the beam, not only would the floor be much more solid, you could have squared and leveled from the beginning. You could have eliminated days of measuring, leveling and shimming each joist. It would have been much easier laying the floor boards, and raising walls without having to worry about the 1000' s of pounds possibly causing the overhang to sag over the years. You're doing a good job though with what you've done.
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the great questions! Allow me to explain: 1) I designed the floor so it could cantilever over the edges of the piers on purpose so the edges of the piers weren't protruding out in the front or back. 2) 2x12 joists spaced 16" O.C. is upsized from the min code requirement for my house design. I could have easily used 2x10s and it would be fine. This design is just as solid as any other floor. 3) I wasn't sure how accurate I could get the beams because my pier rows weren't perfectly straight. By squaring the joists instead of the beams, and allowing for overhang, that allowed me to square the floor on top if the beams even though they weren't perfectly square themselves. 4) The joists would have to be leveled and shimmed regardless because non of the Grade 2 lumber is exactly the same dimensioms...it varies by up to a 1/4" with 2x12s. 5) I'm learning as I go building a house for the first time 😄, so don't take anything I do on this channel as professional advice. We are documenting our process to share but there are always better ways to do things. This is just the way we are doing it.

Great progress! I've never seen a 10x10 beam used in this type of foundation. Are you guys building a 2-Story (i.e. Heavy) house on top? Seems to me that 3 2x10s nailed together (making the beam 4.5 in by 9.25 in) would be more than adequate? What State are you building in, if you don't mind me asking?
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 7 месяцев назад
The 10x10s are way overkill, but I wanted the house to be nice and sturdy 😄 not planning on two story, although of we had more time, we probably would have gone higher. We are in southeast Georgia.

Would it work to attach the blocking to the new joists before standing them on edge? That way, the spacing would be correct, no more measuring and remeasuring for each one, and time saved. 😊❤
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 7 месяцев назад
The problem is that the joists aren't perfectly straight or square. The wood has some twisting and warping over time and fluctuates with humidity. So we have to trim the blocking as we go to make sure the joists end up 16 inches On Center
