Jeffrey Kluger, editor-at-large at Time magazine, recounts the human landmark of landing men on the lunar surface. Kluger talks with Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins and astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and, in archive footage, hears from mission commander Neil Armstrong about the achievement of the first Moon landing, and of the "magnificent desolation" they found there.

I was just a kid in July 1969 when Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the Moon. I still marvel to this day at the accomplishments that NASA and those brave Astronauts made during the Apollo missions. I can’t imagine the intelligence, skills and bravery that those heroes possess. It also makes me very proud to know that it was American ingenuity and intestinal fortitude that got us to the Moon and I’m damn proud that the first men to walk there and the first flags planted there are American. God bless all of the men and women who worked for NASA and their contractors who made those missions possible. God bless the families of the employees and astronauts who endured so much stress and in some cases lost loved ones to the program. God bless the astronauts who lost their lives in service to their country. No, it was because it was easier for Armstrong to leave the cabin without damaging the LM. The door opened from left to right and with Aldrin stationed on the right they would both have to have changed places before opening the door and in the cramped conditions it could have caused problems. They tried it in a simulation and they damaged some instruments, so it was decided that the commander would always come out first.

Think about it: the entire -- 2011 inflation adjusted -- budget of the Space Shuttle Program, which lasted 30 years, was only $196 billion ($6.5 billion per year averaged)! I don't recall during the period of time that we were photographing the solar corona what stars we could see.’ COLLINS:’ I don't remember seeing any.’ So, you can see that Armstrong answered something that wasn't asked, about seeing stars while photographing the solar corona from lunar orbit, which makes sense given how bright it was. @Jan_Strzelecki
@Jan_Strzelecki 5 лет назад
_why is there no crator blast from the rocket as they landed?_ The Lunar Module didn't make a noticeable crater because: a) it was spread over wide area, b) the final stage of the landing wasn't long enough, c) the exhaust force wasn't high enough; d) under the thin layer of dust, the surface of the Moon is rather firm, as evidenced by troubles the astronauts had when trying to plant the flag. _And why are the landing pods so clean n dust free?_ Because there's no atmosphere on the Moon, so there's nothing to hold the dust particles in place to hover in place and settle on the landing pads after it landed. Essentially, every dust particles blown away from the landing area would continue to move away. The astronauts boots, on the other hand, got dirty because they were dug partially into the soil, and one boot could throw some dust onto the other and vice-versa.
@yazzamx6380
@yazzamx6380 5 лет назад
Hi, on Earth, grains of sand or dust blasted up by a helicopter would become trapped by the surrounding air to create large swirling dust clouds around the helicopter, where after landing the dust/sand in those clouds would eventually settle back down to cover objects and the ground. For example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RKlrvf3lUxk.html In the vacuum of the moon, there's no air to trap the dust particles blasted by the LM's rocket engine to form dust clouds, so instead they fly away in straight lines at great speed, eventually landing a long distance away. For example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gFuP-ZUNz_8.html Also, here's a close up of the surface directly below the LM, where we can see the top inches of loose dust have been blown away to reveal the more tightly packed dust underneath with cracks in the surface. If you look carefully you can even see the radial lines created as the dust was blown away; www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/AS11-40-5921.jpg There also appears to be a slight brownish discoloration of the surface too. I hope that information helps :-)

Because that's what NASA was directed to do. Sending men to the Moon is incredibly expensive, and once they'd beaten the Russians there, the US public lost interest and Congress began cutting their budget. The fact is most people can't see a point to sending men to the Moon, so NASA wasn't allowed to do it any more. It is not, and has never been, a question of technical capability. It is a question of funding. It makes no difference how easy it is to get to the Moon technically if no-one stumps up the money to pay for it.

There are many more clues but none as ridiculous as the take off from the moon . Try not to laugh .Havent been back in 45 years after such a successful set of missions ? How did they get into / out of those suits and out / in the door of the lunar lander ? @@passage2enBleu I've started watching it, and it's kinda interesting, but... right at the start, in the first part, at 8 minutes it falls into the trap of saying "this looks a bit like..." And from then on, there's no claims of any mathematical proof or justification. Instead, it's focused on publishing an image of this double magnetic field over anything with a plane. That's not proving anything. It's an interesting idea, but it doesn't really feel expressed. And of course, it has nothing to do with the veracity of the Moon landings.

It 'no longer exists' in the same way Shuttle and Concorde technology 'no longer exists'. If we need a need Space Shuttle or a new Concorde or a new Saturn V to get people to the moon, we will design and built a NEW craft. Hence look up NASA's massive SLS rocket due to launch next year that will take people back to the moon in 2023.

_They went to the moon before Atari but they cant go to the moon with second generation VR Occulus Rift._ They could, if they had enough of them and stacked them high enough. But don't you think it would be easier to use rockets? _The went to the moon in black and white and they can't go now in 8k._ The maximum resolution of a screen in any given time has nothing to do with the capability to land on the Moon. _If your selling this crap I ain't buying._ You've bought another crap already anyway. You see, the thing conspicuously absent from your non sequiturs is money and public interest. Sending men to the Moon is incredibly expensive, and once NASA had beaten the Russians there, the US public lost interest and Congress began cutting their budget. The fact is most people can't see a point to sending men to the Moon, so NASA wasn't allowed to do it any more. It is not, and has never been, a question of technical capability. It is a question of funding. It makes no difference how easy it is to get to the Moon technically if no-one stumps up the money to pay for it.
