Investigation of the aerodynamics of the toaster-shaped Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart Z27AG using basic wool tuft analysis and other techniques.
This episode: I revisit Sandown Raceway after 5 years better prepared to try and determine if vortex generators are really worth it (or not) on the Colt as a drag reduction device.

I put on cheap small vortex generator shape of water drop on a Suzuki Lapin (a car that make the colt look like a jet fighter in comparaison). Give me great strait line stability and less prone to car movement due to wind and truck passing by. So just to say even small crap from chinese chop 5 mm tall can do a great job compare to nothing. Of course cheat box shape are more wellcoming those. Not also i put in front of the A pillar and effect is good also. A pillar are zone of great turbulence so vortex can help if placed well

VGs can be used on the roof just before the rear window on the bmw e36 body shape to promote attached airflow over the rear window and down on to boot where you can fit a small bootlip spoiler. This makes a noticeable difference in higher speed stability by reducing lift at least, if not generating overall downforce. This also reduces the drag over the rear window and a well designed spoiler can give cleaner air seperation at the back to reduce drag in the base area. Some body shapes will benefit more from vg's than others, and they can be used as part of a wider strategy to achieve particular airflow characteristics

Agree it is very body shape dependent.

@@rcoltlyf i do like how you tested, measured and quantified their effects on your car though, then arrived at your conclusion based on the data. Too many people slap stuff on without any thought. Really enjoyed the vid mate 👍

Excellent video. Thank you for your dedication and scientific data. Perhaps those VGs were too "tall". Tiny ones under 1cm (inspired by shark scale) near the point of detachment might give the most improvement. The idea is to leave laminar flow untouched, only use VGs where the hi-low pressure gradient is greatest (as seen on wings and propellers).

Smaller ones should have less drag and these were max 2.5cm tall (1 in.) so maybe.

Nice Videos, just in case you want to try a new bionic kind of Vortex generators, let me know in your reply, Keep up your racing.

Happy to have a look for sure. Would need to have at least some evidence for possible benefit to take half a day off to coast around the local racetrack!

There is scientific proof by a university, one VG contributes 0,4% on drag reduction for a Semi Truck class 8, for your car I would use the smallest design which is around 10cm long the one you used in the video are Airtabs they advertise it with 2%-6% improved milage @@rcoltlyf

Don't suppose you have an actual reference on that so I can look at the design?

I wud buy the new Mitsubishi Mirage it has a true kammback, etc. thus, really good mpg/liters per km. or just copy paste those paid qualified engineers' work & stick your name on it, toaster dynamics :)
