Investigation of the aerodynamics of the toaster-shaped Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart Z27AG using basic wool tuft analysis and other techniques. This episode: Do side skirts do anything on a (modified) road car?

Love it! aerodynamics is so interesting, and even more so on the colt as there are problems that occur just based on the design, but also can make alot of improvements. very cool! Yes, i´m an colt owner too.

nice stuff, I'm gonna check this stuff out

well, then there is also reduction of turbulence by filling more of the gap between ft and rr wheels ALSO less air striking the front of the rear tires

Hi, was just wondering how the flat floor goes around the rear torsion beam.
@rcoltlyf
@rcoltlyf 2 месяца назад
There is a drop frame lower than the torsion beam from where the fuel tank bolts in, then it curves up from there (diffuser) and attaches to the bumper. The rear torsion beam moves within this space - it was installed with the torsion beam hanging with the car on a hoist to make sure it would not hit when fully dropped

its weird how prius uses side skirts but hyundai ioniq doesnt...

hey do you have a video on the construction of your undertray? I want to build one for my car (ford)
@rcoltlyf
@rcoltlyf Месяц назад
Nah. I have a few photos on how I go there but no actual video footage. I may turn the photos into a video at some point. Thanks for the idea.

@@rcoltlyf yeah bc I have a few ideas to mount it correctly, I'm just worried about drilling into my floor and causing water ingress lol
@rcoltlyf
@rcoltlyf Месяц назад
@@tturi2 That much I can answer. The colt has a series of holes in the chassis rails already that I used as mounting points. I just had to sort out a way to use these.

Very informative! You reckon you can do engine ambient temp comparison between stock hood, no rain shield hood, ver-r hood? Kind of a daft thing but eh xd
@rcoltlyf
@rcoltlyf 3 года назад
Probably not, largely because I only have the one hood! Could probably bodge rain shield vs no rain shield vs blocking the vent somehow, though the actual data generated would be be of limited to most other people because of the full undertray I run which would change the ventilation. Having said that, you can see a shedload of heat that comes out of the hood vent even with normal use so I find it difficult to believe that the full hood would not be hotter than the vented hood.

Have you tried front wheel aero discs only since most of the losses occur at the front? More out of curiosity than anything
@rcoltlyf
@rcoltlyf Месяц назад
Good point, but brake cooling was such an issue for a long time that improving aero is not worth sacrificing actually being able to stop reliably.
@sporkybutterz
@sporkybutterz Месяц назад
@@rcoltlyf Absolutely valid point... being able to stop barreling down the track is critical. It may be more work than it's worth but I was referring to the 80s style Porsche lemans approach. The discs would have vents plus flex ducts for brake cooling but that's a more involved endeavor. Aero unfortunately is about compromises

Could a bespoke canard be used to create a vortex to seal the floor edges?
@rcoltlyf
@rcoltlyf 3 месяца назад
I don't think it would be easy - a) it would need to be at the level of the side of the splitter - higher than that and it would not seal anything and b) it would need to survive the turbulence from the front wheel, which is considerable. Don't believe me though - see here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aCXTVpj1Ci4.htmlsi=Vbx0ij_tUDo0MNBj&t=440

@@rcoltlyf Great video! I guess I'm getting in over my head, but I'm curious if you could modify the back of the front fender to try and contol the air from behind the wheel somewhat, maybe using one of the bottom elements to create an air dam or sorts? I'm new to learning the finer details of aerodynamics and it's very exciting.
