Work has been going on for years at the Tobacco warehouse, here is a look inside and from above as well as the smaller one next door. the building was once the Largest Brick built building in the world.
The Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse is a grade II listed building and is the world's largest brick warehouse with a net floor area of 1.6 million square feet (148,644 square metres). It is adjacent to the Stanley Dock, in Liverpool, England. Standing 125 feet (38 m) high, the building was, at the time of its construction in 1901, claimed to be the world's largest building in terms of area. The 14 storey building spans across 36 acres (15 ha) and its construction used 27 million bricks, 30,000 panes of glass and 8,000 tons of steel.
The overall design is by A. G. Lyster, the Dock Engineer, but Arthur Berrington almost certainly played a part. The warehouse was a late addition to the Stanley Dock complex and was built on land reclaimed from the dock. Stanley Dock is accessible from the dock system or by barge from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal which enters under Great Howard Street bridge.
With the decline of trade going through Liverpool, the warehouse fell into disuse in the 1980s and gradually into disrepair. More recently the building has featured in the Stop the Rot conservation campaign by the Liverpool Echo newspaper. Part of the ground floor of the warehouse was used for the Sunday Heritage Market. In 2010 local club promoter Sean Weaver held a warehouse rave on Boxing Day, which saw 2,500 people descend on the building. Acts included DJ Rolando, Kids In Glass Houses lead singer Aled Phillips, Hatcha and Chrispy, as well as a plethora of local DJs from the area.
In 2014, Stanley Dock Properties, under the auspices of the Irish company who had previously transformed Belfast's Titanic Quarter, Harcourt Developments, put forward a proposal for the warehouse to be converted into 550 apartments accompanied by businesses, cafes and retail outlets on the ground floor.
Between 2015-2021 Tobacco Warehouse was redeveloped into several hundred apartments as part of a larger development of the whole Stanley Dock site. The plans involved hollowing out the centre of the warehouse to create a garden-filled courtyard and the building welcomed its first residents in 2021

Always been fascinated by and loved that building. Good to see it's finally being put to good use. Expensive apartments though, but I bet they're amazing inside and your buying a piece of history as well as a home.

its great its being used. shame they had to dig out the middle but it still keeps its character form outside.

I did wonder what had happened to this development. They've got a long way to go to complete it

Great video Paul. Really enjoyed the peek through the windows shots and the pan from old to new. Some really beautiful interior design in the main foyer. At 11 mins in the video you begin to film from top to bottom and there is a hopper at the top of the down pipe - was that an inscription on it or just decoration?
@veryhighguy

Knowing the building I would say an inscription or date

A huge reconstruction project that will not be completed for many years yet...due to the uncertain economic climate surrounding private housing and its affordability...

It’s lovely except for the horrendous yellow cladding. Makes it look like a cheap new build hospital.

i agree. I think they went for a bright colour was because the space is all enclosed.

It'll be years if not decades before they complete the rest of that development. I could afford an apartment but not the management charges which would be like another mortgage.

A worthy investment in my eyes the building is solid masonry like 2ft thick, that thing will still be there after the nukes get dropped. Least you know your getting an iconic Victorian fortress for the price of a house.

Its well done but dark I suppose its unavoidable. I dont agree with hollowing out grade 11 listed buildings its destructive. I see they had to for lighting. The communal area is disgusting that could be nicer looking and theres no nature not a plant to be seen or cosy corner.

Great videos thank you for these. Such a shame with the aesthetic choices for interior though, military style fonts opposite french art nouveau poster art and premier inn hallways and fixtures- all very jarring and unrelated to the building history.

The US military used it as a hospital in WWII and some walls had lettering put on them in keeping with that.
