Great review, and well formatted. I'm super interested in the Tobii eye tracker in the long term, and your comparison to VR is particularly interesting. I've long wished that could play Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous in VR, but with a young child and no corner of the house to really call my own, it's a no-go. This looks like a better alternative for enhancing my game experience. I also want to say that it's nice to see the reviewer once in a while, it really helps to connect the voice to a face.
Very comprehensive review. I normally have a lot of problems with reviews but yours was very well put together. Very smooth delivery, down to business, covered a lot of areas of concern, good script and flow, good microphone and audio so you were easy to hear and understand, and really helped me understand the utility of the device in a practical manner. I usually never give comments but wanted to let you know I appreciated it. Thanks very much for your hard work. My only advice would be to consider perhaps in a future video how someone with disability problems might want to use it, since I have hand issues, but since that isn't a focus on your channel, I can't fault you for that.
I appreciate the feedback. I want to do more hardware reviews in the future, but just haven't had the time. This will help me dial in the formula down the line. Thanks :)
Great review my dude. Can't wait to try mine out. Mostly I'm lookin forward to using it to bypass the built in limitations of the SC cam suite to up my composition game while on the move.
I was hesitant when saw promotion page for Tobii on Star Citizen page, as all the previously promoted stuff there was mostly crap. Oh boy, i was so wrong! Got it - Love it!
bit late to the party but good review, just ordered one via star citizen offer, watching this i think it will massively increase the immersion, good vid well done
Thorough, well delivered review bruh. I am using the Tibii 5 mostly for Star Citizen and I am really pretty satisfied with it. I am still working to get my sensitivity setting just right, but i'm pretty close now. My other favorite sim is DCS world (haven't played ED in a while but it's fun too). I am working Tobii into my default tracking selection for my combat flight sim. I am migrating from track ir, which works great, but I really do believe that once i get Tobii lined up with my sensitivity needs in that sim it'll be tough to go back to just head tracking. And you're right about the "inadvertent eye-tracking." It's not a show stopper or even a real hindrance, but can be a little annoying. I will probably use your workaround with a disable/enable hotas button. Thanks for the review Fly ..Fight safe [SALUTE]
Thx for the review ! It's looks Honest and that the thing i sherry the most in review. As a casual (and not the winner) i found it too expensif for me. But i"m sure a lot of ppl gonna have fun with this thing and i'm very glad that sutch futuristic tech made it to gaming ! Thx Space tomato ! KEEP UP THE GOOD work !
Good stuff. Think I'll get it on Amazon whenever it goes on sale. Next I'd really love to see an all-in-one device like this that also includes support for FoIP.
Amazing to see tobii's tech come so far. And it looks as understated as it's first version. Bought the first version (I'm THAT much early adopter) and got disappointed badd. I thought they would never get off the ground but somehow they pulled through, probably an interesting story in it's own right. Anyways I think I would buy this for my brother who's into halo 4 would definitely find a real use for this....and at that price, he just wants things to 'work.' I'm probably going to wait to see how gen 6 will turn out since I fit more into the casual use crowd. But just like high refresh rate monitors, this now looks like less of a nice early adopter toy and more of a truly useful esports tool. Cool review.
I've been looking at this for MS Flight Sim. It's not cheap but it would be so nice to be able to look out of my aircraft windows without pressing a button and be able look at my controls naturally.
Combine this with Foip and sold! I hope it is accurate enough to look at toggle switches in Star Citizen and flick things on to avoid using the mouse amd play with a gamepad.
The best for inmersion is VR but not all games support it, and some people get tire when using VR headsets. Vs Track IR, it's almost the same just Track Ir PRo uses a clam with IR lights that gives awesome tracking but that means there is a cable, probably if they upgrade they can make a wireless version, I in fact using a power bank and then don't need to stick the cable to the PC, but still a cable. Oh! yes there is something about moving your head vs moving your eyes... with Track IR your eyes are free, with Tobi your head is free but moving your head means your eyes are moving too.
Thanks for reviewing this. I am interested in the product, but concerned because I have a vision disability which causes, among other things, small involuntary eye movements (Nystagmus). It's interesting that you can limit the feedback by tying it to head movement, and I wonder if that might work for me. I tried contacting Tobii to ask, but never got a response.
I think the biggest limitation of the current implementation is the mandatory mount at the bottom of your screen. Mainly because my cat constantly gets in the way xD
Very nice review. My Problem with my VR is, that you're totally decoupled from reality. You don't want this every time playing a space sim. But when playing on monitors, the movement of view is missing. think about. thx
I agree about having many programs running, or different programs for different functions. I use Track IR 5 and have a key to disable it so thats quite common. 230.00 on Amazon.. Thats not to bad. Might have to get this.
Thanks for this review! I just pulled the trigger on one of these yesterday, and it arrives tomorrow, replacing a TrackIR 5 with TrackClip Pro. I am looking forward to getting rid of some cables, and not having to wear anything to get head tracking (Star Citizen webcam FOIP tracking doesn't count). The only downside is that MSFS2020 doesn't officially support it yet... there is a clunky workaround to get it to work using 3rd party software, but I'm not sure I want to go that route.
Good video! I was considering whether I should get one, but it seems like games have given up on Tobii. There is barely anything new that supports it at this time.
I love my Tobii Eye Tracker. I ended up disabling it for FPS and for mining as well. Only because it controls the mining head for some reason, which I'd love to turn off and just use it for head movement. Other than that, it's been awesome!
Looks pretty neat. Will have to pick it up at some point since VR goggles don't work with my IPD. Also, question, what desktop backgrounds do you use, they look awesome! Specifically the one at 3:28
I'm a bit worried: as a track IR user (I have an old 3) I think this could be less cumbersome to use, but on the other side, the fact that it tracks your eyes rather then your head means you might have less control on where you want your monitor to point at as eye movement is less deliberate then your head. I'm not sure as I never used a Tobii but I'd be I tested to hear from someone who tired both track IR and this.
I am an avid VR gamer, but alas, VR has kinda ruined flight/space Sims for me in a weird way VR is so incredible for flight sims... I can't stomach to play without it. But that's the problem. I can't spend 20 minutes setting up VR, getting in, and playing VR for 4 hours. When I'm done, my eyes are stressed, I am stressed. So there, I can't live without VR, I can't live with VR. Hopefully this tech will give me something to use when I want to chill and log hours on flight sims.
I have this and trackir and while I enjoy the freedom of eye tracker but in regards to starcitizen I really miss the ability to set curves for head movement that trackir has.
@@SpaceTomato this is my issue you need each game to add options for this while trackir deals with it on its own meaning all functionality is in all games that support it. Forcing devs to create something to deal with curves is such a backwards way to do it.
Hey Space Tomato, got a question for you. I want to record a game testers eye tracking on a game I am working on, to see what they look at and what draws their attention. I want to be able to record their eye movement with out the tracking ring/circle being visible to them during gameplay so it doesn't distract them. Then later, be able watch back their gameplay with the eye tracking ring visible.. Do you think that this would be possible with the tobii eye tracker software and windows software? I would try it myself but the product is pretty expensive. Thanks for your time!
I just ordered this and I do stream, by the way, but does it aim where you're looking at with your eyes in FPS games? I have carpal tunnel so it's very hard for me to play FPS games with a keyboard and mouse with this work with a gamepad for aiming in FPS? I did buy it for Star Citizen.
Really kinda wantin this sucker, but bein a granpa w/ bifocals - exactly the type of glasses it has probs with - I'd either have ta get a set of dedicated gaming readers or wait for someone to figger a work-around. Good vid, Tomato
Tobii say the screen size limit is 30 inch 16:9 but your monitor looks to be 34 inch or more. Since I'm using a 34 inch screen I was wondering if you had any issues. Also since its been a year do you still use it?
Same here I actually just got mine this morning and before I opened it noticed that on the box.. But Ive read that others have it working on much bigger monitors with no issues. only the extremes will be affected.
hey, thank you for the intformative video!, i wanted to ask if Tobbi eye tracker is suitable for high pace software usage? (clicking on buttons really fast in a software and not a game) Thank you!
The eye tracker will keep up with your eyes for sure. As for how it might function in combination with fast clicking, I'm not sure. But it's speed is instant.
@@SpaceTomato Thank you for your response! Do you know where I could find info about tobbi eye tracker for software specifically? Most of the info is relevant for gaming.. thanks!
The price is too high for me. Probably gonna look for a good webcam , once the game is a bit better. Sadly webcams are pretty bad right now. Both in price and performance.
it would be cool if, when you looked off-screen, that it would center your view and stop using tracking in game. with all these head tracking technologies, it gets irritating when every movement of the head affects your game, even stuff that doesn't involve the game. it makes you annoyingly aware of how much you move your head. so it's either too sensitive or not sensitive enough.
Just got one yesterday, it’s garbage. Returning today. TrackIR works so I’ll stay with it. And they are from Sweden which means returns and replacements will take forever. IF you risk this. Buy from Amazon so you have some return protection as they have no real customer service and YOU pay for returns on THEIR broken items. And international??? Yeah…So extra calls to AMEX for purchase protection.
