Todd McFarlane DRAWS Batman: Year Two - Batman's Got a Gun! 

Batman: Year Two was made almost simultaneously with Year One. In fact, Alan Davis departed from DC because his cover for the issue was redrawn to fit with the yet-to-be-released art from Year One (specifically the gun). The first issue of Year Two came out a month after the final issue of Year One, but there was at least some initial discussion with Denny O'Neil about releasing the stories simultaneously. As Year Two ran in Detective Comics, the Batman comic shifted from Year One to the new Jason Todd origin story. These three story arcs established the new continuity for Batman after the Crisis. Oh, and the previous issue (Detective Comics 574, which came out the same month as the last issue of Year One) establishes the relationship between Bruce and Leslie in post-Crisis continuity. In the pre-Crisis timeline, Leslie was a social worker, and she was unaware that Bruce was Batman. Barr revises the story so that Leslie was Bruce's legal guardian after his parents' death, and she is now a doctor working in Crime Alley. Bruce takes Jason Todd to her after the Mad Hatter shoots Robin in the previous issue, and much of the issue is a flashback that helps to establish Bruce's reworked backstory.

For issue four, I think I saw an interview with McFarlane where he said that this was the issue he stopped penciling and went straight to inking for speed.

Dr. Tompkins also appeared in season 1 ep. 16 of Batman The Animated Series. Also, McFarlane modeled Bruce after himself but his girlfriend is 100% his wife Wanda.

I copied that cemetery shot so many times when I was younger. I remember even doing one on 11x16 paper and had it folded in half for storage. I still have the trade of the story among my TPB collection.

Ah yes, the comic Mask of the Phantasm was loosely based on. And there's a storyline from Legends of the Dark Knight titled "Faith", where one of the sideplots is Dr. Tompkins really hating Batman but ending up somewhat fine with it after she finds out it's Bruce. I guess that story took place before this one despite having been published later in '91.

Reaper looks like a proto-Spawn to me.

Loved this story and art, also I can see alot of this story heavily inspired Mask of the Phantasm.

Showing my age when I say I was a heavy-duty comic book geek just around the time when DC had its all-too-brief renaissance in the mid-1980s, when for about two to three years between 1984-85 to 1987-88 it seemed like everything they touched turned to gold. Crisis, Watchmen, Swamp Thing, the reboots of Wonder Woman, Superman, Flash, Green Arrow, the introduction of The Question and Captain Atom to the DCU...and of course Dark Knight and Batman: Year One...and then I eagerly bought Batman: Year Two. And I felt ashamed and upset. To this DC fanatic, this storyline felt like a descration of the Batman mythos they had worked so hard to build. "The Reaper" was a character created especially to kill Joe Chill because Batman couldn't kill. I actually went back to the comic book store and bought a second copy of the final part of this story, especially so I could tear it up right there at the store counter. Yes, I was that much of a naive fanboy. :P Little did I know what was coming from DC and Marvel and everyone else...namely, the "grim and gritty" era. But at that time I felt Mike W. Barr to be a hack, and this proved it to me more than anything else at the time. In the years since then I've grown up...sort of...and I've realized there are many writers out there who are far worse than Mike W. Barr. But even so "Year Two" still seems like a cheap cop-out.

It is unfortunately that Alan Davis didn't draw YEAR TWO in its entirety.

Whaaaat!!!! You guys missed the Akira reference on 30:00!!! This was my favorite comic growing up. I used some of the fight scenes for a Bruce Lee comic I made in 7th grade. Then I noticed the similar style of McFarlane and was blown away. After I realized that scene is straight from Akira when Tetsuo kills Yamagata.

Isn't this issue the one where they changed the gun type, on the cover, because DC asked? Great video, btw, loved soo much that story when I was a kid.

Are all of the backgrounds SUPPOSED to be the SAME colour, and some are just more faded than others? Or did each cover originally use a slightly different shade of orange?

That issue 3 is the sweet spot as far as artwork alcala and mcfarlane killed that whole issue.

This isn't even in the same universe of quality as Year One. It's still an ok batman story from the 80s. During that era, even a bad batman story was pretty decent lol
