Snider looks like he's having the best time of his life. It's obvious how much he loves Jerry Jeff Walker. It's really great to see someone with the talent of Todd Snider , show such respect, and generosity. Todd Snider is an alright guy.
I saw Todd in the late 90's while he was on tour for "All Right Guy". He got to the last song and said that his Father had just died and they had been on tour and most of the rooms were half empty. We were in a small concert bar and you couldn't move in the place. He looked up at the ceiling and said "Thanks Dad". He played 3 hours straight and ripped the roof off the place. Got 4 encores, got in his bus and left. Been a fan ever since.
I will never forget the time I seen Jerry Jeff it was in Eureka California and I was right in the middle of the Eagle House Hall, And Jerry Jeff come out and played? About the time Gypsy Songman came by out and he opened the show with Gypsy Songman! And he played every song I knew,! and he played his last song was a song I never heard before! And I will never forget that song? He sang with so much passion and I remember that I seen a few teardrops fall down his face and I was so impressed and he played id this really worth it, laying my life on the lines
I am 18. I am so thankful my dad, Bookie, turned me on to killer music! Todd Snider, Robert Earl Keen...and thanks to Jerry Jeff, John Prine and that era...great, great stuff
I would have cut off a little toe and maybe even a pinky finger to have been at this show. RIP Mr. Jerry Jeff Walker. Hope Mr. Bojangles is up there with ya.
One of the things that is so wonderful about this performance - so f'ing amazing in a time where performers are so much about themselves - is the deference that Todd and Amanda give Jerry Jeff. Watch as they stay very much to the side. Look at how they follow him with their eyes and play in support. This is his moment and they do everything they can to ensure that it stays that way.
@@klimtklavier 100%. I just saw this for the first time, literally tears streaming down my face. When JJW walks out and does a jig....and they all just support the song...and adjust...and pick up...and back off...and watch and listen...just legendary respect...like they showed Mr Prine.
I was in college in the early 70's & I picked up on Jerry Jeff, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, the whole "Outlaw Country" vibe....loved there free spirit and disdain for the whole commercial music scene...good to see the younger artists and fans still appreciate and respect that as well...there IS a future for the world...it's right here, in the music...the spirit...Peace & love indeed
My wife and I were lucky enough to see Jerry Jeff at his Birthday Bash in Austin 3 years ago. We were sitting in the second row of the balcony right behind Jerry Jeff’s son. We did not know it was his son until he got on stage a played a couple songs after the intermission. One of the favourite nights of my life.
Just one of the best songs ever written. Every now and again we get to experience moments which will stay with us forever. The people who made this gig just had that pleasure.
Yup, I just love it when the 'upstart young'uns' give that due respect to their mentor elders! I am a BIG Todd (and DBT/Isbell) fan, but I was into JJ, Townes, Guy, Billy Joe, Ray Wylie, et al, WAY before he was even born. ;) If I recall correctly, I believe that Amanda played fiddle at one of the very many Slaid Cleaves shows I've attended (and NO I am NOT confusing her with Jenny Scheinman who I have also seen backing up Slaid's live shows on fiddle), but I've lost track, so not sure. I will admit though, I welled up a bit watching this one!
Weeping with such joy and sadness. What an amazing story from Todd Snider. Thank you for sharing. So much irreplaceable loss with the passing of Jerry Jeff Walker. Austin in the Seventies was an endless stream of beautiful music wafting from one end of town to the other. Sigh.
Now Charlie Pride. Damn. Well, the only upside to all the loss is that the tradition of singer songwriters continues on through the music of Todd Snider, John Moreland, Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, Hayes Carll, Morgan Wade, Cody Jinks, Arlo McKinley, Benjamin Tod, Sierra Ferrell, Cary Ann Hearst, Casper Allen, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires, Steve Earle, Jon Dee Graham, and a shit load more that I just can't think of right now. Those just happen to be some of my favs. If you haven't heard of some of those names, go search them out. You will probably not be disappointed. I hear people all the time say that no one is making good music any longer...mostly people in their late 40's are older though. Anyway, it's the farthest thing from the truth. There's more music in general being made than ever before in human history. A lot of its great and super accessible. Okay, diatribe over!
This comes as close as possible to fitting the definition for euphoria. Todd was genuinely there and I can't imagine any musician not feeling the love.
That was pure magic. I'm damn near 60 years old, so i've been around as long as that song. It's a timeless piece of music, and any musician will tell you they wished they had wrote it. It's not just a standard, it's an anthem to a time when the world was much better off.
Oh my heart! We played this song at my grandfather's funeral. I didn't know Jerry Jeff Walker or Todd Snider then, but serendipity and providence brought us together.
One of my favorite songs and performances as I think it represents love at its purest. To see this video with Todd and his hero JJW together is emotionally overpowering as the tears stream and I'm reminded once again how blessed I am that God at least gave me the talent to appreciate good music.
Oh my gosh. I've heard Todd tell this story but this show must've been amazing to see. I mean.. Todd, Jason, Amanda and Jerry Jeff.. what a treat. RIP JJW.
This breaks my heart but also makes me smile so much!! Todd I think this performance beats the story your told!! You must have done something right indeed sir!
Saddest news to start the day is losing a great old friend. Jerry Jeff Walker's music was played so often by me & my friends, he was like an old friend - always welcome to drop in for a howdy and bringing his unique sense of humor. Perfect music for almost any time. ~You'll be missed Scamp. Your like won't come by again in my lifetime. Born Mar. 16, 1972, Jerry Jeff passed on last night Oct. 23, 2020.
The adoration and respect Todd’s smile makes this video so special. Oh the chances to share with mentors. Jerry Jeff, you will be dearly missed, but you have left a legacy.
Thank You Pete Seeger for introducing me to Arlo Guthrie...thank you Arlo Guthrie for introducing me to Todd Snider...thank you Todd Snider for introducing me to Jerry Jeff Walker.....I'm lovin' the journey !!!
@@puelemueix You really need to check out Jason Isbell and Amanda Shire the other guitarist and fiddler. Jason can sing and write 'em as good as any of the old guys. With all due respect of course.
"I told you to wait in the truck!" I have never seen this one until just now. Just wanted to hear some Jerry Jeff. Never even heard of Todd Snyder. What a cool story and fantastic performance by my late great Man, JJW.
I sit here ...crying....it was. .beautiful. ...jerry Jeff. ...& todd....this song means so much to me...not sure why...it always makes me cry..no matter...who sings it...
Please never take this video down. I swear I was just to your left at this show. I swear I can hear myself holler' in this video. I recorded about 27 seconds of this, and them my phone was full. The next day I found this and saved it to a playlist. Just came across it again and it was like I was there again. Thank you for capturing my favorite 8 minutes of live music ever. ☮️
Amen brother, Jerry is a legend here in Texas and loves to spread his ' good old boy' style with everyone. And Todd Snider is a talent himself! Really good show, Glad you got to watch this come down!! 👏 👏 Awesome 🎶 🎵 💞 🔊 🎵 🎼.... Enjoy while he lasts my friend! 👀 🎸🎧🎻🎤✌️✌️✌️
I've watched this video about 20 times now and it makes me simultaneously laugh at cry every time. I listen to music non-stop and have a number of favorites. When I put Jerry Jeff back on, though, it feels like I've come home. I was at the Santa Fe concert that Todd references and it felt like Jerry Jeff was passing the torch to Todd.
Amanda Shires is an artist in her own rite, but this video may prove that she is the best accompanist of all time. The way she fills the void and pulls back when the time is right is perfect.
The look on Todd's face to see Jerry after he had just given him such incredible memorialization. That was worth more than a thousand statues an a million parades.
Couldn’t believe I didn’t notice Jason and Amanda in all these years. Wtf I was so blown away that it was Todd and Jerry together. I’m glad I came back and paid enough attention this time
I was just a young feller in 1968 but I remember the moment I heard Mr Bojangles on the radio riding in my dad's car. Like it was yesterday. I became a JJW fan that day.
I'm not convinced this world was ever worthy of a talent like Jerry Jeff. The first time I went to Luckenbach I could feel the magic he always sang about. Rest in Peace Scamp Walker.
Man, can't watch this without getting goosebumps. Everytime, I love watching Todd's face when Jerry Jeff walks out. Makes me so happy. And Jason being as humble as he is just stays in the back and doesnt say a thing. So much good in this video. Love it.
Glad I listened to this one, so sweet, as I've gotten older66 now, been listening to Jeff Jeff Walker since my teens, now I tear up when he sings of Mr Bojangles dog that died.
Amen. We saw him last night in Tampa. And he was looking a little rough. He still delivered (and told some wonderful Jerry Jeff stories)....But I always worry if it's the last show I might get to see.
Long live Jerry Jeff Walker...may you forever remain in our hearts and may we always pay our respects when we cross paths with the Mr. Bojangles' of this world.
Could you Imagine being there at that moment? That's just one of those things in life, you just smile and walk on...Saying WOW, and thanks for the rest of your life...
I’ve had the honor to mix for Jerry Jeff. And he sounds awesome in this concert. Todd is such an expert story teller. Love Austin! Love Jerry and Todd!
Thank ýou Jerry Jeff Walker, for writing one of those greatcoats that brings me to tears 50 years after hearing it for the first time. Firstly by Jerry Jeff, then the Nitty Ģritty Dirty Band's UNCLE CHARLIE AND HIS DOG TEDDY
It's 3 o'clock in the morning and I woke up ,aching old bones won't let me stay in bed long..I happen to live in New Orleans and I have been in that same jail..but I didn't write a song ,but I'm mighty glad Jerry Jeff Walker did! I'm watching this incredible performance and so glad I grew up in this great city where we dance every day!
Considering that Jerry co-wrote the theme song for ACL, it adds yet another level to the amazing convergence of talent that night. I most likely would have been in tears if I had been there.
Awesome and a half. I have loved JJW and Bojangles since I was fifteen, that was in mid sixties. He befriends Oregon grown Todd Snider and I think he's great too. You can see the admiration in Todd's eyes as he shares the stage with HIS hero. He's a lot of people's hero
What a great story, and to that I would like to add something a friend of mine who is singer and a songwriter and he said to him the biggest compliment he can ever get is hearing a person playing one of his songs not because someone requests it but because the player wants to.
One of my favorite songs! And my favorite singers especially Jason Isbell! There is not a better songwriter or singer alive on this earth now than him!!!!!
Jerry Jeff is one of just a few remaining true-to-life Troubadours. Do yourselves a favor. And cherish every last glance you can see of him working his craft.
Wow I did not know Jerry Jeff Walker wrote the song when he was in jail. This adds a whole new level of awesomeness! I first came in contact with the song through Sammy Davis Jr's version when he was mentioned, very briefly, in the movie Good Fellas. I've seen the movie several time but that time I looked him up and with it came this song and a whole new plethora of great music.
