Beginner guide to servicing your four stroke outboard in this case the Tohatsu 20 hp efi. The engine and gear oils are straight forward to change out on a regular basis and are easily done with basic skills. Fresh oil and a new filter on a regular basis is the best way to minimise wear and tear on your outboard. In many cases the outboard costs as much as the boat so it makes sense to look after it as best you can.

Great video Phil. Great tip on the gearbox filling, I didn't know that by installing the vent screw it causes a vacuum. I've used the squeezy tubes and they are very messy. Looking forward to the Cornwall videos.

Excellent video Phil, a wee bit anti seize grease on the threads would help when your putting in the plugs, especially when your in salt water use. Just for anti corrosion between the alloys so it doesn’t bind and stick. 👍

That's a very good tip, thanks for sharing here it will help everyone. On my return from Cornwall both outboards had a good 15 mins ticking over in the fresh water tank (aka wheelie bin). Good to get the salt out of the internals.

Excellent. In the early 60s my dad always smelled the oil. He told me, he could smell burnt oil, carbon. Not sure that he ever did anything if he ever smelled anything lol. I guess it was just habit, something old boys did 😂

I have just bought a new to me used Yamaha 9.9 4stroke fishing motor and the gear oil is leaking out of the prop. seals.Hope I can fix it with just new seals and prop shaft and bearing are still O.K. My shoulder is feeling better.Trust yours is too.CHEERS from HERE!!!

Hopefully an easy and cheap fix for you. Yamaha bit should be plentiful. The shoulder has really come along these last few weeks, glad your's is too. Phil.
