Thanks a bunch Steven. Saved me from hiring a plumber. My mother addressed this problem, because she fell down. So getting done asap..."No more slips and falls". Thanks again!! Subsrcibed
I am about 90% sure this is what is making my toilet leak. 15 years ago when I bought my house, shortly after, one of my dogs dropped a rawhide in the toilet, and it got stuck in the trap. I had to remove the toilet to get it out. I knew nothing about plumbing, but I got it figured out enough to know that I had to put in a new wax ring. I'm pretty sure I used one with a funnel, which seemed like a good idea at the time. Looking at the black, toxic, goo in this video is what has me dragging my feet about installing the new toilet I bought at Home Depot. Alas, I feel I have now watched enough videos to have a good idea what the problem is and how to fix it. It's time for me to "shit or get off the pot" as they say. (lol) I can't thank you enough Steve for all the great videos and information. I bought two pairs of heavy duty PVC coated gloves for the job. I, for one, won't ask you why you wear gloves, I know. :)
Thank you for this, this is exactly the problem I had a few years after installing a toliet. And then I went and replaced the wax ring with the same kind of wax ring, only it didn't take years to start leaking, it started leaking right away. After seeing your video I went out and got the right kind of wax ring and did the job over again, this time no leak! Thanks!
I have change a few toilets in my day and have used the funnel wax seals but after watching you and learning I will never use a funnel wax again. Thanks for all the great videos.
Good job Steve, That was a old America Stranded Toilet, 4-Gal per. flush or maybe 3.5 Those old toilets really got rid of the waste. But now they are labeled water wasters , Again great job.
You the man Steve , been plumbing for 8 years and my boss buys those wax seal with the funnel and I have had to return to plenty of call backs for water on floor or basement ceilings and thanks to you I just cut them out with snips cause that's what he buys us. I tend to also feel when u auger a toilet when u pull back sometimes the head of the auger gets caught on that plastic . All in all they suck and won't install them anymore and I haven't been since u brought this to my attention many videos ago. I am explaining the issue with my coworkers. Thanks again buddy.
justin henning if you look on this video this funnel was split probley from a toilet snaking .i am sure .best to just cut them out ,,,its a stupid design, no one told me i found out from finding toilet leaking on floor and there was no there way for water to get on floor.. i do change a ton of them out ..
These videos help so much. Half my 1 bedroom house flooded because of the toilet was leaking all night and water kept cycling. Got a water leak detector and new wax ring and new bolts.
Another great example of those POS wax rings. I used to use a mini hacksaw to cut bolts like that but found that 12" bolt cutters work really nice. Most of the time you have enough room to use them, if not the saw is a good go to. Thanks for sharing Steve.
RU-vidr "FIX IT Home Improvement" just found a really good alternative to wax rings. It's a sticky ring that looks like a wax ring and it has a jello-like consistency that can stick to the toilet or the flange and can spring back (regain its shape) if you ever have to pick up, rotate, or move the toilet, It comes with and without the funnel. This video is 30 seconds long and the guy (FIX IT Home Improvement) explains everything about it. I don't know if you can find them at the plumbing supply stores in your area but if you see one, try it out, It will do just as good as regular wax and there's no need to defrost them in the winter.
100% right steve..these new toilets flush so much faster than the older type..my boss is old school and loves the plastic ring.. i think he is coming around now to my side.
I normally watch your video while I'm at work on lunch. It was pretty tough to get that Little Debbie cake down during that one. Another great job...it was almost like you had done that before.
so you never have to use wax ring with flange or when do you need to use one, i work apt maintenance and we use them but we do get a lot of toilet leaks at bottom of bowl at the floor. thank you steven
jeffrey gallagher 90 % of times a get a complain about water on floor around base of toilet it because of them black horns on the wax toilet should dump into pipe with out a obstruction . so i install a regular wax and problem goes away ,i will never use a wax with a horn , i would cut the plastic out with sizzers
I repaired a toilet that had a damaged plastic flange with a metal reinforcing kit. I replaced the wax ring and then put the toilet back on. I then sealed the bottom of the tank with caulking the way it was initially. Now I think I might be getting a leak through the caulking. I think I might have damaged the wax ring when trying to get the toilet back in it's proper place. Is the only way to fix it to replace the wax ring entirely?
steven lavimoniere I was thinking about that because I had watched your video before doing this. But I am in a rental house and wanted to install it the way they had it originally. Part of the problem is that I think I might have adjusted it too much when I tried to install it which messed up the wax ring. Also, I could barely get the flange repair pieces on there because the holes on the repair kit didn't match the flange very well so I am hoping the new metal flange piece isn't too high now. I will try it without the plastic piece.
That was a nifty tool for applying pressure to the nut to tighten it up. I can think of other situations to use it besides just toilets. Did you call it a "Johnny bar"? Who makes it?
steven lavimoniere Avocado green is still extremely common here, I seen lemon yellow, baby blue, dark purple, dark blue, all black and the best one I saw last week was a chocolate brown toilet. hahah
Biggest reason toilets leak is closet flange lower than floor height people add ceramic floor later on flange 5/16 3/8 below floor leak every time double wax fixes this every time thick and thin nead together
I will try to do that.cant flush.water spills all around the toilet.doesnt flush.also one of the pieces inside the tank broke.the one inside.thethe handle when you push to flush.
+ThaRedPitbull ya the young kids always ask why would you wear gloves i can figure it out .. sitting down in mama basement never worked a day in his life .i can't figure it out ,,why would anyone ever wear gloves is beound me lol ,ya i hear it alot .make me lmao .every time
Mine was 20 years old...it musta been shit wax Mine is a slab.. My wife accused me of pissing on the floor because of too many brews. I don't even drink brews anymore... I changed to Sour Mash...LOL ....for the homeowners...I use a wet dry vac for the water... Steve found a portable way, because he's smart
After all this time using that style thinking the flange was superior I see you don't like them, I've had other plumbers tell me that but I guess I've been lucky so far
SuperAceuno1 i have changed a ton of them all leaking on the floor it takes a few months to start to splash but they will believe me they will ,,,,dumb idea installing them . well it keeps me busy changing them out i should say
I have a lot of respect for you plumbers... Some of these people now a days are filthy disgusting pigs... The she try's to blame her kids...... Don't blame you for wearing gloves! Thanks again man!
Ive always been trained to sit on the toilet, and to use your weight to gently rock back and forth before you bolt it back into place for a better seal between the wax and the toilet base. Also, using a hand hacksaw on the bolts most likely will mess up the threading. Then, the next poor guy will not be able to take the toilet off again when needed. You're supposed to use an electric cut off tool on the bolts so you can cut the bolts off evenly as possible and not mess up the threading on the bolts.
