Tokyo. A model familylife in 1965 東京 

Thank you for the video, which remainds me childhood. Here are minor corrections from a child who was born and raised in Tokyo around that time. We did have screens at that time. Kaya, the the mosquito protection sleeper cover, was for much older era, and I personally never seen the real one. I remember that my grand mother used to explain what Kaya was to me. Electric mosquito killer was available, too. We called it "be-pu" We were still using the coil style mosquito killer, but it was not so popular for fire sefety reason. People are not wearing kimono for daily life, except older peole, say age 60+. Kimono was for occasions. If a person wear it everyday at the mother's age, it looked a bit unusual, meaning that people might think the person had special background to do so. We definitely did have meat at dinner almost everyday in1965. We ate rice for dinner, but majority (if not, more than half) of families have bread and cereals for breakfast, especilly at Tokyo area. My grand father's favorate was french baggete in the morning. It had to be purchased from a certain bakery bacuse it tasted so good. I still remember the bakery 's name. Hope it helps. xx

No, it wasn't unusual then. That "singing" actually is traditional "chanting" named "Yokyoku" or "Utai" telling old stories, some more than 4-5 centuries old, one of several forms of similar chanting/singing. Yokyoku is mainly practiced by Samurai clans, almost as requirement. This chanting is used for NOH acting telling ancient stories. This family seemed in higher middle class, possibly descend of Samurai class that the quality, size of house/garden, look of the family members show.

I grew up in Japan. I'm about the same age these kids. They really seem quite wealthy; nobody in my neighborhood lived so well. Still, I enjoy this. It makes me nostalgic.

Ichiro’s elementary school is that of a famous Catholic private school. Ichiro's house is very large and its Japanese garden is marvelous. Few Japanese have that kind of beautiful garden. Ichiro's father's white suits are fashionable. Ichiro's father must be an establishment rich businessman.

1965年は東京オリンピックの翌年ですね、私が中学2年生、邦楽では舟木一夫のリーフと云う曲が流行っていました、洋楽ではジリオラチンクエッティの夢見る想い、シルヴィーバルタンのアイドルを探せ、サイモンとガーファンクルのサウンドオブサイレンスが流行っていました。

Black for boys and red for girls is still the most used, but there's also a full rage of pink and light blue shapes, and i'm quite sure i've seen a green one XD

この頃、地方都市の長屋団地暮らしだったけど、親も含めてテレビ(白黒)ばかり見てたぜ。 風呂は無かったので、銭湯通い。 蚊帳は生まれてこの方一度も見た事ない。 ベープ(マットタイプ)か豚の蚊取り線香入れだったもんね。 こんな行儀の良い和風な暮らし、見たことない。 アメリカのテレビドラマの影響か、庶民でも洋風な暮らしに憧れて、畳の上に椅子置いたりしてた時代。 富裕層なら、日本家屋であっても、なおさら洋風な生活してたはず。 このお宅、西洋人の日本人に対するステレオタイプ演出じゃね？

I love how these old movies were used to promote trade with Japan (such a nice, modern, honest country), promote visiting and investing in Japan (such a profitable and educational venture), promote Christian dress and conduct (way more comfortable for Westerners who have to see the locals and interact with them. Kimonos, although beautiful, are rather startling and gaping is rude) and in general scrub the horrors of WW11 from the American mind. Of course, what you see is not always what you actually know.

My grand parents' house was about the same mostly. There was a small bridge over a pond and Koi(fish) were swimming in it. They wore Kimono every day. My grandpa enjoyed Wisky every night. I miss him and those memories...

一般的な中間層ではなく、いわゆるお金持ちの家庭の様子ですね。実在ではないかもしれませんが、お父さんお母さんは戦前ちゃんとした教育を家庭内外で受ける機会のあった方々をモデルにしているのでは。少し違和感（気取った感じ）はありますが、生活や風俗の紹介で間違っているところはありません。また私の叔父は特に金持ちではありませんでしたが、謡曲を習っていました。家でも練習していたはずです。

都心部で庭付きの古民家風の邸宅に住んでいる〜かなり裕福な家だと思います。お母さんが着物をきてたり、旅館風の和食の夕飯、子どもも浴衣に着替えて寝たりかなり演出もあるかな〜と思いますが、この動画の親の年代はおそらく大正の終わりか昭和初期に生まれた方です。そうなると着物を普段着で着るのも普通の事だったのかもしれません。和室に布団を引いて蚊帳をつるして寝ることは、エアコンが普及してなかった昭和４０年代頃までよく見られた光景でした。なつかしい。

懐かしい映像アップロード、ありがとうございます。私は、 イチロウ君と同い年位です。映像は名家の裕福な家庭に見えます。ですが、市営住宅に住むサラリーマンだった私のお父さんも謡っていました。なんでしょうかね、流行っていたのでしょうか？

1965年の日本を映したカラー映像としてはすばらしい。 しかしながらツッコミどころが満載の吉田ファミリー。 息子の一郎は制服と校舎から おそらく名門の暁星小学校に通う5年生。 妹は花子。 その生活水準と地理的要素からお父さんも おそらく丸の内あたりの一流企業に勤めるエリート会社員。 →既にこの設定が日本の平均値からかけ離れているような。 暁星小学校近くの靖国神社の参道を横切り下校しながら ジャンケンポンをしてグリコ遊びをする一郎。 →一体ソコは都心のどこなんだ？ その後、家の近所で野球をする中、他の子供は私服なのに 一郎は立派なユニフォームを着ている。 →いくらボンボンでも1965年にこんな子が 　他の私服の子と混じって野球してたのだろうか？ 一方、妹の花子はどこかの庭園の様なお庭で毬遊び。 そこへ ”綺麗な着物を着た女中” のような不自然なお母さんが 「一郎をお呼なさい」と花子を走らせる。 程なく立派な玄関のお屋敷に一郎と 何故か？お父さんもこんな明るい時間にご帰宅。 →お庭も含めてもう自宅というより 　京都の神社仏閣のような現実離れした佇まい。 　玄関マットでか過ぎ！！料亭か…。 →お父さんはサザエさんの波平よりも早い帰宅ではないか。 「典型的」と紹介された日本人の食卓はあたかも料亭の様で この光景はもはや家庭ではなく「お店レベル」。 日本には家畜を育てる土地が無いから肉料理は無く 野菜、果物、魚やご飯を食べると紹介される吉田家族。 →これだけ裕福ならステーキも食ってただろ…。 夕食後、日本のお父さんは誰でも歌の練習をするとの事で 紹介されたその歌は謡曲…。 →ホンマかいな…。 名門暁星小学校へ通う一郎のそろばんは 人差し指だけで親指は使わない。 →本当に暁星小学校に入学出来ましたか？？ 60年代の憧れしアメリカンファーミリー像に 無理やりアメリカ人が想像する 日本の上流家庭を当てはめて作ったのか？？ それにしても一郎はもう67歳か…。 今はどうなっているんだろう。

現代でもありえない豪華な食卓だな。昔の日本は豊かだったんだね。

いつの時代のお話なのだろう（笑）。当時6歳でしたが、すでに炊飯器はありましたね^^。それに寝るときはパジャマでしたし・・。あ、確かに蚊帳は使いましたよ！。お食事の豪華なこと、まるで旅館のようです。

they changed clothes 5 times a day and in India in 65 we hardly changed once a day most extreme cases 2 times ..

This family belongs to upper middle class in 1965 Japan. Except that the house is relatively large, the interior decorations are very plain, the desks and dining table have no chair, and the book shelves are ordinary plain ones. They all sleep in futon, not bed. They all sit on the floor instead of using chairs. A super rich family in Japan in 1965 had luxurious European style furniture in the house, and all the family members were dressed in expensive clothes.

I would die to see how Japanese housewives clean their houses, when is the time? and how often do the clean? and how do they make it spotless to the point that you could sleep on the floor? I have never seen or heard from one, I would like to know and learn from them.

It seems that the film was made not in their real house, 😂 , but in a museum with a garden 😂. Not real, but I liked the film and atmosphere.
