you probably figured this out by now lol but I would assume the toilet room outlet would be for a bidet and the switches might be to turn on or off outlets :) but cute little place you got!

Thanks for sharing your apartment! Unrelated to your tour, but what brand of suitcase is the orange one? It’s huge! Hope you’re doing well in Tokyo😊

Thank you! It's an old Samsonite, it was perfect because we only get 2 suitcases to move everything over here

Congrats 🎉on getting into the JET program . Any updates on how you like the JET program and living in Japan overall so far ?

Thank you! I've been loving it so far. The Tokyo placement certainly has its advantages and disadvantages, but living in Tokyo has been amazing. I've signed my recontracting papers so I'll be doing another year here. Living in Tokyo is definitely the best part of the job, while the job itself has its challenges. I have some classes that are a pleasure to work with, and some specific students that always ask for extra help and I love working with them. But I also have some more difficult classes with rowdy kids and whatnot. But overall it's been a very positive experience! Thanks for asking!

thanks for the tour :) nice to get an idea of what to expect. If you don't mind , I have a question regarding JET housing I couldn't find anywhere which is if the JET housing contractors etc help those accepted potentially find housing that accepts pets ? In my case a cat . O

No problem! So there will be different rules depending on where your apartment is, and what that management company enforces. In most prefectures with JET, the housing is subsidized, and provided for the JET (and is often furnished as well) through the prefectural board of education. If there are rules that say you cannot have pets, you are allowed to try and find your own place that does, but you won't be able to take advantage of the housing being subsidized. Finding a place by yourself without the assistance of a board of education can also be difficult, but this will vary depending on where you are placed. For Tokyo, since we do not receive subsidized housing, we have to find an apartment by ourselves or with the help of real estate agents provided by JET. In this case, you can just ask your agent to only look for places that are pet friendly. I know someone in Hachioji who brought their dog with them. They had to return to their home country after arriving to retrieve their dog, because they could not bring it with them when setting up housing/orientation etc, but it is possible if you are dedicated. I do not personally know anyone in another prefecture who has brought a pet, so I can't attest to how easy/difficult that process is unfortunately. And yes, I'm enjoying it a lot, thanks. My plan is to recontact if it is offered this December. Hope this helped!

thanks for the cool tour! it's a little bit of a culture shock to me that you gotta get all your appliances. i hope you can get them for a good price! also, i have a question. did you put tokyo on any of your placement requests on the application? i am applying to jet for next year and though i know people say not to hope for a certain area because it's random, i do have many reasons that i hope to be in or near tokyo. i just never see anyone who requested tokyo and actually got placed there. thank you! also, this might be very random but you sound so very similar to kurtis conner!

I did put Tokyo as the top choice on my application! However, I don't know how much consideration they give (if at all) to the places you request. I think it may have helped that I mentioned having family that lives here, or it may have all been by complete chance. Best of luck!

@@Ryan_In_Tokyo thanks for the reply! that's great to hear, i'm glad you got your top choice! i've heard that the only times they really consider your placement requests are if you have really good reasonings, so family living there and medical reasoning are the two i hear make the most compelling cases. i only really have medical reasons to request near a city, but hopefully they consider putting me in tokyo if i do get accepted! may i ask how the experience has been thus far?

@@yulpiewsert1520 No problem! I got here in the beginning of August so I've been here for about 2 months now. The experience has been great so far, I think the Tokyo placement has made things really easy to transition to living abroad. Some of the initial setup can be scary, like getting a bank account, cell plan, internet, etc. But my supervisor at work has been wonderful and very helpful with that process. There's also a great expat community here, and a lot of JETs in Tokyo so I haven't felt the feeling of isolation that some JETs unfortunately experience. At my school I don't have a very heavy workload, but that is subject to change for any school, as I know some JETs who have much more responsibilities/less free time. Hope that's helpful!

@Ryan_In_Tokyo I hope your experience is still going well!! that all sounds like a good deal to me. I actually got into the program and got placed in Tokyo, too! I'm back to looking for housing options but I'm going to be a public school JET so idk where in Tokyo I'll be yet. A sharehouse will probably be my first accommodation lol. Connecting with current Tokyo JETs has been helpful!

Hi Ryan! Is your apartment subsidized?
@Ryan_In_Tokyo
@Ryan_In_Tokyo 10 месяцев назад
Hello! Unfortunately, it is not subsidized. As far as I'm aware all Tokyo (public and private school) JETs do not receive any money towards housing. Most of the JETs I've met here spend between 50-90k yen/month, and thus take home a smaller portion of our salary compared to JETs in the countryside who do receive subsidies on top of the cheaper housing market. Such is the trade-off for getting the Tokyo placement.
