Tokyo Rig Fishing: 5 Benefits Over Texas Rigging

There are numerous lure options for bass in shallow cover-rich environments, but Mike Iaconelli stresses that normal baits like Texas-rigged plastics are only good for one or two things. When looking for maximum versatility, Ike reaches for a Tokyo rig. He shares 5 reasons why the unique terminal rigging system gets the nod over standard flipping and pitching setups in a lot of situations.
TACKLE USED (additional product links at the bottom):
• VMC Tokyo Rig: wired2.fish/TokyoRig
• VMC Tungsten Flippin Weights: wired2.fish/VMCFlippingWeight
• Berkley Powerbait Pit Boss: wired2.fish/PowerbaitPitBoss
The strength of the system stems from its unique rigid wire dropper and o-ring connections which work in unison to provide the following benefits:
1) Keeps the bait off the bottom. Unlike a short drop shot, the rigid wire doesn't collapse, so while the weight at the end of the dropper may bury in the mud or grass, the hook and soft plastic are visible and accessible to a bass.
2) Freedom of movement. The hook and dropper wire are connected via a welded ring which allows the bait to swing up and down and left to right without restriction. The plastic is essentially non-tethered and comes to life as designed. More action means more bites.
3) Easy in and out of cover. The rig is keel-weighted so the weight punches through cover like a bullet with the bait and line following straight behind (no bend in the line). The same is true when pulling out of cover.
4) Ability to shake the bait in place. Similar to a drop shot, the rigid wire allows you to shake the bait in place without moving it. This can be an effective tactic to coax bites from tentative bass or give them more time to find the bait in heavy cover.
5) High hooking percentage. The weights don't impede hooksets. When bass eat the bait, they get the hook and plastic, not the dropper wire and weight. This prevents the weights being uses as a wedge to open the mouth on the hookset which reduces hookups compared to closed-mouth hooksets.

I have always fished a texas rig and I will agree with this. I like the tokyo rig better. The hook up ratio is insane. Half the time I dont even need to set the hook. The only thing about the texas is you can cover more water. I find the tokyo alot of the fish come when you work it vertical. I'm a fan.

People who only fish once a month don't want to learn new techniques. While tournament fishermen like myself are always looking for better ways to do things and will never turn down a bit of extra knowledge! 90% of people I meet only fish with weightless senkos and trying to get them to try something new is impossible. And you'll never convince those people otherwise... Totally fine, you can fish whichever way you want, just keep an open mind, maybe a senko or Texas Rig isn't the best bait for that specific day or time of year.

@@stevemccormack8101 Couldnt agree more. I have a friend who says he fishes...but every time we go he uses only a senko and when he doesnt get bit...he gives up the first within the first 30 mins of fishing. Guy running 20lb line on spinning reel throwing a 5 inch senko weightless and he get s coils on his line every cast. He had that senko fever lol..in his bag is literally every color senko he found at BPS, he carries nothing else besides hooks and senkos.

Best attributes I’ve found for the Tokyo rig: 1. You’re not dragging your line through the rocks like on a Texas rig = less lost fish/hooks. 2: shorten up the wire and it’s a Gika rig with the same benefit.

I personally would rather use a texas rig than this. I do use it sparingly, but i use about a 3 to 3.5 inch wire. His is so short, honestly it doesn't work quite like explained. It never stands up on the wire. It can't. as far as setting the hook, I can't disagree with his explanation. It'll get em.

I have never seen someone so awkwardly catch a fish before. He pulled it left to the open out of the snags then draged it back in, into a full reclined laydown hand grab. The drag must be set so tight to skull drag it in that fast out of the weed.

Well if your snell knot a Texas rig, the weight pushing on the hook during a hook set forces the hook to poke out and catch them. I’ve never lost a fish flippin mats Texas style. Also you can suspend your bait by simply not letting it sink to the bottom if silt bothers you so much lol

C'mon Ike, when a fish "eats" the rig, it only takes the soft plastic"? BULLSHIT. Anyone who's seen a video of how bass "eat" knows they suck in or inhale the entire bait - they engulf it. They don't bite down like humans do on a cheeseburger. This entire ridiculous contraption goes into their mouth as they're all connected - bait, hook, swivel, split-ring, rigid wire, and weight. Sure, this thing can catch fish but so will anything if the fish are hungry/aggressive. Some dude caught a big bass on a chicken mcnugget for cryin out loud. Advantages over a t-rig? I don't think so; you're grasping at straws on this one. If this thing is so great, how many tournament anglers are throwing it? I'll bet none. Another thing that's ignored and/or edited out here is how many times did it snag up or get fouled with weeds? This thing is full of metal with several joints and intersections that can easily collect weeds, get hung up on wood, rocks, etc. As for the "rigid wire" keeping the bait off the bottom, it's connected loosely and therefore it flops all over the place unless you continuously fish it fast. Finally, bending the rigid wire to hold a weight is a hassle and it's just another connection to collect weeds. Sorry, not buying it, literally or figuratively and especially not with my hard-earned dough. I'll stick with the t-rig and drop or power shot.

The fisherman haha you're literally clueless about fishing. You flipping in cover with 30+ braid you can pretty much catapult a 5pound bass through the mate into the boat. For sure can if you're this fisherman, which is one of the most successful in the business.

@Wired2Fish
@Wired2Fish 3 года назад
Unlike tying a short drop shot rig, the tokyo rig gives you some rigidness. Allowing you to fish in brush and thick grass without getting wrapped up. It also supports the bait up off the bottom in many cases where the fish can eat it more cleanly. This rig was developed for a reason and simply fills a void that a short drop shot leader cannot.
