▼The Full History of Capital Relocation in Japan▼
• The Full History of Ca...
If you’ve ever considered coming to Japan before, you might have noticed that the names of the two major cities, Tokyo and Kyoto, have very similar names.
But why? It is because they were both the capitals of Japan.
Kyoto became the capital of Japan in 794, and from there until the end of the Edo period in 1868, the Imperial Family continued to live there for more than 1,000 years.
The Tokyo area also started to hold the function of the capital in terms of economy and politics, since the time the samurai gained power and the Kamakura Shogunate was established (1185). The Edo Shogunate started by Tokugawa Ieyasu was based in the Tokyo area too.
When Japan Westernized in the 19th century and Edo became Tokyo, the Imperial Family also moved to Tokyo to live there to establish a new modernized government. This is when Tokyo became the capital in both meanings of where the Emperor lives, and where the center of economy and politics are.
So the two kanji characters 京都 both mean “capital,” but 東京 means “the eastern capital.”
By the way, one of the first capitals of Japan was actually built in Nara prefecture, but it only lasted shorter than 100 years.

What’s funny I live in Tokyo and when visiting Kyoto I had many conversations with locals who disagree. Kyoto was named the official capital of Japan but when the emperor moved to Tokyo it became the unofficial capital. Locals to Kyoto proclaim their city as the only true capital of Japan and Tokyo is only important due to its ports being better for western shipping.

it’s also amazing to see how Kyoto somehow remained in the style of the times when it was the capital, other than Tokyo that’s really modern and influenced by the West

The fact that Tokyo is a functional pun is hilarious.

東京 Tokyo Eastern capital 京都 Kyoto capital capital But as a province Tokyo is written as 東京都 eastern capital capital (but the last character denotes province here and is only used for Tokyo to indicate it's the capital province) Osaka and Kyoto uses fu 府 Hokkaido used dō 道 And the rest ist ken 県 And you can thus refer to Japan as todōfuken 都道府県 in a very poetic way Or if you teach someone about it's provinces you can use this expression as well to say provinces of Japan

I'm sure if ieyasu was alive, he wouldn't mind the imperial family ruling from Edo(Tokyo) at all since it had been that way for 260+ years during the Edo period but the power was centralized within the shogunate.

Cool video, very informative, but I think you should look into the correct pronunciation of the word “politics”

I mean this as a helpful correction: “politics” is pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable, like “POL-i-tics”.

Cool! I've always wondered why, but I assumed it was just because I didn't speak Japanese that they sounded so similar.
@Cherodar

That is partly the reason! The "to" in Kyoto has a short O, while the "Tō" in Tokyo has a long O--it's just a coincidence that they end up looking and sounding alike in English. The "kyo" part is no coincidence though, they actually are the same.

I was always curious about this, so the "Kyou" part is the same, but you got "to" and "tou", which have different meanings, both connected to the "capital" word in their own each case. Thanks!

So this is like New York having a city on the other side of the state called "Yew Nork."
