Wim De Cock every time they interview with TCC, they say “oh we have been listening to you and the community” no you haven’t wotc. As a new player I want to get into paper magic, (I started on arena, I pay 20$ at the start of the set, and then another 20$ during the set it works out pretty well) I own 1 EDH deck. But it’s not financially viable for me to play any other format, because I must play hand in EDH. I budget myself 100-150$ in the 99. I've had to quit playing competitive magic several times over the years due to not having the money to afford it. Once they ditched MSRP I knew my personal end to magic was coming to an end, and sets like this are why I've wiped my hands entirely from playing the game. I love this game. I've worked at and co-owned LGS's in the past. I've judged magic at the competitive level. I WANT to play it. But I can't. I can't justify paying the amount of money it takes to play anymore. It makes me so sad. Thankfully, I have friends who can afford it, so I'll be able to sit down with their commander decks and play casually with them, but not everyone has that luxury and I don't think WOTC understands that, or if they do they don't care. Thanks for continuing to make great content, Prof. Just because I can't afford to play anymore doesn't mean I don't still love the content. I have a completely tuned Tymna/Thrasios Ad Hoc cEDH deck that's optimized all the way up to my copy of Timetwister. The deck is worth a little over $9,000. Even someone like me won't be buying Double Masters. $300 a box for reprints is stupid, I'll just buy the singles I want from my card shop. My deck is filled with black bordered foreign Revised dual lands, Timetwister, Imperial Seal, Mana Drain, Masterpieces galore. I'd abolish the reserve list and tank all of their prices just to keep people playing the game. Wizards is putting too much effort into preserving collection values that making their game approachable for people who actually want to play the damn game. Abolish the Reserved List, make every set pack price $3.99, make every new Commander deck $35, etc. The sheer amount of extra people you will attract to the game and retain as established players will MORE than make up for the lower shelf prices. Wizards and Hasbro don't seem to understand this.
@mikwiebe450
@mikwiebe450 4 года назад
I think the profit margin dip that will come before the player base expands is scary to Hasbro and the financial team of Wizards. $3.99 instead of $16.50 is just under a quarter profit, and so to shareholders and finance people that is basically suicide. I'm not saying the price is good, I can't afford to buy good cards and new products at all. I just don't see the upper level people even budging one bit.

@@mikwiebe450 A quarter of the "profit" of printing cardboard???? You seem to be mistaken, thinking the production cost of printing cards is anywhere event remotely CLOSE to their selling price. $3.99 per pack of Double Masters would basically x6 or x7 their individual unit sales. Many who were just gonna buy one box of Double Masters would likely now buy a full case. That would tank secondary market value but more cards would get into more players' hands, more people would be able to play, and Wizards/Hasbro would make more money per customer on Double Masters. More people would be able to support their LGS buying those boxes from them as well. Sealed product is their lowest profit margin product, but profit is still profit, and a set with the content like Double Masters would fly off the shelves.

Yeah, this stuff will never happen. I own a signed Ancestral Recall and some duals/legacy and modern staples +1 modern deck and I am considering selling everything, I think that MTG is in a downward spiral that has been in motion for a couple years now. I would also be 100% for dropping the reserve list and reprinting power/vintage staples, etc. The fact that a number of modern decks cost as much as legacy decks did not too long ago is honestly a canary in the coal mine. Also they could honestly charge $30 or even $25 for commander decks - $25 would put them in line with their industry ($50 for premium board games.)

I played MTG back in the 90’s and ( foolishly) sold my collection. Fast forward to Theros block and I’m playing again. Much to my surprise, WOTC created a fourth rarity ( mythic). At the time I was like “ what the heck” and quickly realized why. Then I started looking up the price of my collection that I sold. Once I regained consciousness, and saw the reserve list ( I have strong feelings on this list), I became even more aware of what was going on. I had a complete set of dual lands, the most expensive was $12. Right before Pioneer came out, there were targeted buyouts and it became clear: WOTC is in fact corrupt. They claim they don’t pay attention to the secondary market which is odd because why else would they feel justified charging a premium for cards that once were sold in a $3 pack? It’s almost like someone should take them to,court over market manipulation. While I do have disposable income, it won’t be going to this game until WOTC gets its head out of its collective asses

@luminous3558 3 года назад
Yeah if you want a company that doesnt care about the secondary market look no further than konami with yugioh. If a useless card suddenly becomes meta relevant they reprint it in the next 6 months, expensive cards become affordable after a year or 2. Konami uses desirable cards to sell product because that makes sense for a company. Wotc does something extremely shady because on the surface their method does not benefit them but the collectors instead.

Theros and international women's day did come out before covid hit, but how they manufactured it was the problem. All Secret lairs until Godzilla lands had the same plan, they pre printed a certain amount (let's say 100) and the first 100 were able to get theirs sent out immediately. Afterwards they would wait to see how many sold to print for demand, no extras. Unfortunately, the production/ shipment of Theros and IWD was hindered by covid, which is why people haven't got them yet. I ordered Theros later in the day for mine and am still waiting for it, but I ordered IWD as soon as they went on sale and have recieved it already. They changed Godzilla lands to no preprint (because of covid) so expect a bit of time to get those as well. I'm not mad about Theros since WotC has been keeping me in the loop about it so I know they haven't forgotten or misplaced my sale/info.

One con I can think of with high price per pack is that it actually doesn't get Wizards the most money. A young Timmy with $20 to spend can only get one pack, and Wizards is missing out on $4 profit. Now imagine if he only had $10 to spend - they just lost all $10 of profit. If the packs were $10, or hell let's say $5, then he'll spend all his money because the individual unit price is low enough that he can spend exactly how much he wants. There have been multiple "expensive" sets in the past couple years that I thought were fun to draft, but I didn't draft as much as I would have because the buy-in for each session was just too high. Basically, the lower the cost of each booster, the more everyone will spend.

I can get why they might want to artificially inflate the price of a special reprint set if they wanted to preserve card values somewhat so as not to kill the collectors and resellers the game depends on, but that's not what's happening here. They are trying to reach economic equilibrium between supply and demand - finding the sweet spot that will generate the most revenue between retaining customers at an increased price. I'm betting they'll end up on the wrong side of the curve and back off eventually, but prices will still end up far higher than what we were used to.

Wizards either has to acknowledge the secondary market, and all the legal ramifications of it, or, explain why an entirely reprinted set with no new card design costs so much. No MSRP was a way to wipe their hands of acknowledging cards prices entirely, but an MSRP with set 9.99 per pack for “new art” reprints “masters sets” should be enough to maintain customers and profit largely. No MSRP has ruined magic for a lot of the players I know, including the person who taught me the game in college. Honestly one of the negative impacts that often goes over-looked, has to do with ignoring poorer players who are the wide BASE.. that keeps your game alive/fresh. When people start leaving a game because the company has become too greedy and decides to only market the game to people with higher incomes.. those same people who spent massive amounts of money eventually stop spending money because there isn't anyone left to "get ahead of" which is often the reason they're spending so much to begin with. You have to strike some sort of balance. You can make way more money with a much wider net.. it may require more "effort" to strike such a balance, that you can keep the game alive for decades to come than a quick burn out to exploit the base you've built (on what use to be a fairly cheap game to get into).

I see these videos, and they honestly make me feel sick to my stomach... because you're right. I love this game, so damn much. When I was 15 years old and a Freshman in high school, well, I had been homeschooled until the 7th grade, so I had a total of two friends, and that is not a joke. I saw an MTG battle deck box at Toys R Us (this was back when they still existed) and I was intrigued by the art. That Monday, I was in the library getting a book when I noticed a whole crew of people sitting around and playing the same game I had noticed the other day. So... that weekend, I went ahead and bought the Eldrazi vs. Zendikar dual decks, and taught myself how to play. I walked into the library that next Monday with the Eldrazi half of my two new decks and said "who wants to play?" and I was immediately confronted by someone who not only wanted to play but was willing to help me learn more than I had been able to learn on my own. I know everyone in that room to this day, all of them my best friends. Looking at what WoTC has done and continue to do to this amazing game I adore, the same game that helped me find my best friends, it sickens me, because I know that sooner or later, someday, others won't be able to have the same experience I did. They won't be able to buy two decks for $25, have them fight each other and learn to play, and eventually, go to their LGS for their first game. They won't be able to buy a Standard Challenger Deck for $30 and just jump into the game for an FNM tourney or even just a friend. If I had seen those Dual decks for $50, or even $40 I can't say I would have bought the product, which means I most likely would have never found my love for the game, or, more importantly, never met the people I can honestly say feel like a second family to me... and the thought that WoTC is doing this for easy, upfront cash, it makes my blood boil, it makes me wish that one person would just stand up at one of their meetings and say it all out loud: It's "Magic: the Gathering," but the higher they raise the cost of this beloved game, the fewer people there will be Gathering around to play it.

300$ for a booster box ... When I was younger I always thought a Yugioh booster box for 100$ is already exorbitant for what you get (which is a box of printed cardboard) and felt unacchievable as a kid ... but this ... 300$ for a gamble box ... 300$ for a box of semirandom cards ... How should the younger starter generation of kids come into the hobby when you lock the best content behind these prices ... For this ammount of money you can buy whole smartphones, laptops, TV's, collections of board games, video game consoles+ games... and kids/teenagers will rather buy these things from their cash ...

Thank you for the video, Professor. As always I come to your channel to hear a reasoned and researched arguments. Regardless of whether I ultimately end up agreeing with your conclusion, I always come out better informed and challenged to make better arguments for my own views. It's a valuable service and I appreciate it. I was very surprised in this particular video, because I saw something I almost never see from you - what I felt to be a misunderstanding or perhaps a misrepresentation of the facts. This does not diminish my respect for your work, as I've seen enough of you to assume this was either an honest oversight or done deliberately with good intention. That is why it is my hope you may see and even respond to this comment. You focus on the price of $16.30 per booster. And yes, bizarrely, Wizards did put that price up on Amazon for a single pack. However at the same time, "Draft Packs" of 3 boosters were listed at $35 (or ~11.66 per pack) and "Booster Box" for $299.99 (or ~12.50 per pack, with 2 free box toppers). Given the "double everything" theme or rares, foils, even box toppers, I don't think double the price is actually unreasonable at all - which would put it in the $8-10 per pack range. Now yes, there is still a gap between $8-10 range and the $11.66-12.50 range. I think there is still a fair point to be made there about increasing cost to the consumer. But why fixate on the 16.30 price for a single pack when (one can hope) almost nobody would buy this "special/premium/double" set 1 pack at a time?

@DANUMD87, how would you feel about a guy who is only making 15k per year being medically disabled and I can't afford paper at all. I'm trying to afford and play Arena however that games structures are just as bad as this upcoming masters set. A full collection per set on Arena everything x4 except the mythics requires about 300 packs opened. Packs are $1, so thats $300 a set. Now u can grind a collection by Drafting, however I'm not good enough yet to go "infinite" however atm Id be spending $100 per set on 20k gems to then have to grind Drafts and put time in to get the collection I want. For me 20k gems for $100 is really bad value for me to then still have to grind games, the gems run out and you do have to rebuy. So Arena is flawed in that sense for the average player, also at these rates for gems/ cost it makes MTG Arena more expensive than any video game or PC game on the market. Whenever I get into conversations about the game economy, the majority of people defend WOTC, defend the game, defend the costs/rewards structures and then every single person goes " Well the game is F2P, you don't have to spend money", "If you don't like the price then Magic is not a game for you". "If you don't like the structures of the game then don't play the game". That is the community and player attitude I see online. My Point being a game is suppose to be affordable for everyone yet so many players of this community imo feel that with money comes power and power gets them wins or a higher status in the community and they don't care about their fellow players.

This reminds me of an old Extra Credit video about free-to-play MMOs. I haven't watched it in years but basically the response the team had when developers ask "how much content do you expect me to make for people who won't spend a cent on my game?" was "As much as you can. Because players are content." The same concept applies here. Players with and without disposable income are going to be playing the same game in the same locations. The more meaningful matches affluent players can have against their more frugal counterparts is the more investment they will have in Magic.

Yeah, this was necessary after that disappointing interview with Gavin a couple months back. Thing is, Wizards does perceive the whole game's card pool (every card out there, literally) in terms of net worth. Their operation is always focused in increasing the value of the whole pool, as that is "the value of the game", which is essentially their property. It is an indicator of how much the game is worth, marketwise. Therefore, there is no interest in devaluing it; that's why reprint sets are always expensive and borderline unaccessible. It's been a pay to win game for a long time now, but as more people play it, the worse it gets. Half my playgroup left the game in the past 3 years, all because of the same reason: price. And that is the saddest thing. Nowadays I just keep up because I love the game, love having the decks and thinking and building; but I almost don't play it anymore. I goldfish a lot, though.

It's always funny that the people that argue with me at LGS are the ones who buy 6 boxes on release of any given set, or do shell out for Master's each time, sometimes multiple. Their argument usually boils down to, "I can make a deck work that costs $25 or less, so magic isn't pay to win!" Well, yeah, *you* can, because you have access to all of those cards at the ready. Half the time if I want to do that, it requires a niche card the LGS isn't promoting on the front of their display, cuz it's a cheapo card, and they don't bother restocking it in their inventory, cuz it's a cheapo card. And nobody has it available for trade, so YOU have access to the card, cuz you have 2.5 playsets of it by now, but unless I get it shipped at a markup from online retailers, I'm not getting that $25 deck. My *usual* response is, "Can you improve the deck at all? Is it perfect?" and invariably, they can think of a more expensive card that will make that deck better. Yet still they somehow don't see that as pay to win.

Pretty much same. I like brewing up decks and making interesting interactions with cards, but I dont want to go broke on these products. Commander products is starting to become out of reach for non-dedicated players, and anything with reprints is usually overpriced. Magic is going down the what I like to call “theatre concession stand” road. Let me explain it like this If a theatre charges you $10 for a bucket of popcorn that we all know costs $1 to make, you feel taken advantage of as a customer. Meaning that people who feel taken advantage of, seek other alternatives. I will either not eat when going to a movie, bring my own snacks, or worst of all for the theatre, just rent the movie from my own home. Magic is currently going through a similar situation. I will either not buy this, and similarly priced products to begin with, I’ll print proxies because it’s almost mandatory at this point for anyone making less than 100k a year, or worst of all, I will stop playing. A customer who stops playing entirely doesn’t buy new sets and products, Wizards. You would do well to remember that. I can think of plenty of other card, board, and video games that requires a lot less capital to play and enjoy with friends.

@DigimonFan814
@DigimonFan814 4 года назад
Plus, in addition to hemorrhaging players, they'll find it extremely difficult to bring in substantial quantities of new players, particularly in this economic climate. Like Prof keeps mentioning, for the price of some of these sets is more than what it would cost to purchase a new gaming console, which has the potential for far longer term enjoyment and value, especially since even investing in non-rotating formats is now just burning money, since power creep in new sets continues to destroy any stability in those formats. I bought a prerelease kit of Ikoria because I wanted to continue my tradition of getting a set promo card and to support my LGS, but currently my deck of choice for modern and pioneer (Spirits) has gotten nothing since last summer and is virtually unplayable. And, even for standard people aren't going to be interested in buying in when you need playsets of expensive cards that will lose most or all of their value at rotation. I don't see the game maintaining a consistent profit margin when WotC continues to thumb its nose at the majority of the player base. Whales might continue to buy in, but if there aren't any players, no one will really care about the cards, meaning that the investors' holdings start falling because what they have is actually nothing but pretty cardboard. At that point, they'll likely stop buying in, as their "investments" are no longer profitable, and then where does that land WotC?

I would love to play this game competitively but simply can’t withstand the amount of money it would take. Which to me is a draw back. You’re killing the drive of the players to compete with each other just for a little bit of money.

I make almost double that hourly, and I can't afford to keep up with all this bullshit either. Like, if I save up until August 7(my birthday!), I would be able to afford a booster box of double masters. But with the new commander decks, and my various other hobbies, I doubt I'll end up getting one. Hopefully they manage to drive the prices of a couple good cards down a buck or two.

Thank you for this, I literally only have enough funds to participate in pre-release events and while these boxes look amazing and I definitely want one - I never will unless it’s a private, at home draft; and with how lucky I’m NOT with regular boosters, I can’t see myself paying $15 for any Masters/CE boosters.

I love MTG, played as a middle schooler and now I'm 30. Although I took a break for years I went hard the past year. I was buying Ultimate, Eternal, Modern, and Masters 25 boxes like they were going out of style. I enjoyed cracking the packs and getting an awesome card, but within a few months I noticed a pattern that turned me away from Magic. Although I play, I'm also a big collector. Box toppers, foils, graded cards, etc are all great in my eyes. Furthermore, I would actually use a lot of Master's set cards in my modern decks. I was temporarily content with price point vs. the average value of a box's content until months later, when I realized how volatile prices were, thanks for WOTC undermining their own product. That $200 Mana Crypt I just got from Eternal Masters? That helped justify my absurd purchase of a booster box for $350. But now that card is $120, thanks for another reprint shortly after. So those who collect take a lose bc of WOTC aggressive and greedy reprint policy. Fine. We live with it and move on. Now, only MONTHS later, it gets REPRINTED again in another absurdly expensive set. So now you're $200 collectible "feel good" card is less than half. This is only ONE example. I can go on and on, such as myself building a $1,200 modern deck to have core cards replaced every few months because WOTC is literally forcing new product down our throats, inevitably updating the meta. So now all the time and money I put into customizing, foiling, caring, etc. about my new deck is reversed, and I have to modify it again, and again, and again. WOTC this is not a good look. I used to throw thousands into your company but once I snapped out of it, I realized your corporate greed has taken away from the meaning of the game. I hope more people realize this and stop purchasing your redundant new product, you cheap pricks.

I haven’t been as hardcore as you, but I spent 9 months building a $1,200 modern deck... only for the meta to get completely disrupted and for my deck to have somewhat limited relevance. I got to play Modern for about 3 months, and yeah. Not happy. Thinking about selling my deck.

I mean, people who really care about having their cards retain value are one of the worst nuisances on the game. However, that's what foil full-arts, old stupidly powerful cards, and the reserved list are for -- which includes Crypt. I understand being a little mad about the price drop on a great old card that nobody really needs, unless you're playing vintage(I'd have been slightly upset if it were about fetchlands tho. Keep the fetches down). And seriously, I agree -- they could make so much more money just printing the powerful cards. Literally everyone wants fetches/shocks/FoW/other super powerful staples. So why is it so hard to print them into oblivion while also filling the market with super fancy art versions? I mean, people would still pay hundreds for a really nice looking Sol Ring, and its normal price is $3!

Sorry to say this but YOU and people LIKE YOU are the problem. Normal players have to think before buying a 100$ set of cardboard with their left over income. Of course wizards of the coast doesn't care enough to lose normal players and their 100$ when people like you buy stuff for 25*200=5000$. The whales is what makes it seem lucrative for WotC to raise prices like that. Additionally you even go one step further and complain about the price-drop of the cards you bought for 5000$. You want them to stop reprinting needed cards or at least put them into more expensive product to keep your value. This is cancerous for the state of the game. We should not support this newfound greed WotC dives into. The more we support and reward WotC for their bussiness model the more they feel encouraged to reprint expensive cards sparingly and in overpriced products. This pushes people out of the game, who just cannot afford anything close to this. And then we have noone left to play with and the only thing to do with our cards will be looking at them. DO NOT support this greedy pricing. If we, the customers, do not teach them that this is not ok, who will? If they learn it the hard way, after most normal folks were pushed out of the game years ago, the game will already be dead and nothing will be left to be salvaged. Buy normal priced booster boxes with 36 packs for 80-100$. Don't support their madness with 5 cards for 200$ or 12 packs for 400$. This is insane. I would go as far as saying: Every needed game piece in a deck should AT MOST cost 10-20$ per card. Standard cards should at most cost 10$ while they are in print, because most of them will become worthless after rotation. The only cards more expensive than that should be promos, foils and other visual varieties of those cards. Buying cards worth 60$ for your decks should be optional bling and not give you an gameplay advantage. Yes, I could technically buy their overpriced sets regularly, but I would feel ashamed for supporting those bussiness decisions and what it does to the playerbase.

This is a great video. You're back on my good side. I just looked at Amazon and saw Battlebond (and many others like Modern Horizons) at far less than 299.99, which is a price that will go up for Double Masters in my opinion. And considering that we don't even know the catalog of cards for Double Masters, it is safe to say that the fix is in for all those at Wizards and their friends, who are "double" dealing in the secondary market. F's in chat.
