Have you been on the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser?
@kentslocum
@kentslocum Год назад
When Galactic Starcruiser was first announced, I was working as a Gatherer and general retail cast member at Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland, California. I was bummed that Disneyland wouldn't be getting a copy of Galactic Starcruiser, but I was cautiously optimistic that if successful, it would encourage management to hire more performers and actors to fill Disneyland's Galaxy's Edge with interactive droids, familiar Star Wars characters, and a stunt show. However, as news began to leak out about Galactic Starcruiser ahead of its opening, I became skeptical that it could deliver all that was promised. I am glad that I was wrong. However, Disney has really dug a hole for themselves with the Galactic Starcruiser. Now that Disney has shown that they are still capable of delivering the exceptional guest service and immersive entertainment that the brand used to be known for, guests and former cast members such as myself are dissatisfied with the status quo everywhere else (except the Tokyo Resort, of course). If anything, the Galactic Starcruiser han shone a light on just how empty and lifeless Galaxy's Edge truly is, and it makes me sad that Disney is reducing the availability of the Galactic Starcruiser instead of making it more accessible to a wider audience. I will probably never be able to afford a trip to the Galactic Starcruiser, but I am glad it exits nonetheless.

Not yet, but hoping to go one day. I think the star cruiser is the next stage in a hotel stay experience. I think this could be the future. Harry Potter fans would love to have an experience at Hogwarts (not disney- i know).

Thanks for the great review Tom. My honest take on it is this, as a deep hardcore SW fan, the sequels not being what I wanted, GE and the starcruiser both being set in that universe is a big detractor for me. I believe I would still enjoy it as an experience, but for die hard SW fans , OT and prequels are what counts, and it just disappoints on that level and so does galaxy’s edge. Not that the immersion isn’t there, or Rise is not awesome bc it is. Disney had almost ruined SW IMO and it’s tough for me to shell out the $$$ for this. I always wished since I was a kid that we could visit different SW worlds. If Disney could have come up with a land that did tattooine, Nar shadda, Hoth Mustafar stuff like that, it would be incredible. Anyway, im getting off subject but hope you know what I mean about this.

not yet ... part of it is the price but part of it is, as a major introvert, the level of engagement and interaction and "talking to people" is intimidating. To do that for a such a long period of time sounds exhausting to me ... I would prefer some sort of "day cruise" option that is more approachable.

As a former-CM I can offer you this little story about my conversation with a Guest at the MK bus hub. He summed his feelings up in a few words that seem to say what Tom is alluding to. He said that he feels that Disney is marketing itself to a smaller number of wealthy Guests and that the rest of the Guests can either take it or leave it. He felt that this was the reason for demanding Park Reservations and having additional fees to access rides (fewer people paying for a Premier Service). He said that this was it for him. He was selling his DVC time and he would not be back. This was a Guest that visited WDW three times a year and stayed in a 3-bedroom Grand Villa. Now that's a protest statement and I can't help but agree.

One of the things we always loved in the old days, early 2000’s, was that when you checked in at the gate of the deluxe they must have passed your name on to the people at the front. They greeted you by name, unloaded your luggage, asked if you were valeting your car, and a cast member walked you to the check in counter. By the time we decided Disney no longer wanted our dollars in 2015, all the personal service was gone. It was all about use the App. And from everything we see, it has only gotten worse. If I didn’t know better, I would think Disney is selling smart phones. Just remember people, the more they have you use the phone app, the less living breathing people they need. Computers don’t require benefits, overtime, uniforms, or be based in the U.S. it’s all about eliminating the biggest impact on a corporate bottom line, employees.

As a former cast member(of 16 years) I have seen the decline of WDW and the service. I noticed it back in 2005(after 5 years of work) that management had changed and it was the cast that made things special. After Eisner left and Lee Cockerell left, it changed for the worse. It was more about the money than the guest experience. Penny-pinching was, and is, the name of the game now. I came back to WDW in October 2021 and started back, well it was worse. The 'schooling' in Traditions was all about inclusivity of the cast and NOT guest service. In my case, I lasted about a week because they denied the bonus they promised and lied to me with what job I was to have. I will NEVER come back to WDW to work and haven't been back to the parks since. I am planning to go back to the parks for fun in the fall(Dapper Days) and that's it. No more. I have been to Universal more and I am more content with them. Disney USED to be the trendsetter, and in one way they are, but in a way that Walt would not be happy with.

Hello Matt. I have many trips to WDW since May 2000. Please know that what you and your fellow cast members do every day for the guests is appreciated by this guest and I'm sure may other guests as well. I agree with you 100%, it is not the same. I have to agree with Tom thou. cast members like you care. Others think of it as a job and don't care all that much. That wasn't the case in the past. I think cast members like you leaving proves that Disney has lost its vision and mission. Many other cast members have been lied to and not accommodated for their particular restrictions as seen here on youtube vlogs. Not sure if I ever got a chance to run into you while you were there in my many trips, but if I did, I know it must have been one of the better days of any of my vacations because caring cast members like yourself truly make things magical for us guests. Best wishes to you.

First, thank you for being a good cast member. As others have said it’s people like you that make those random interactions with cast members a pleasurable vacation for us. This inclusivity of the cast attitude is one I think every company, aside from Mom and Pop places, in America is forced to accommodate. Heck, you can’t even get a “Thank you” from a cashier at your local Walgreens when you check out anymore. But I digress. The American worker today expects to be catered to by their employer. Perhaps we’ll see a shift in the opposite direction but it will take a lot and meanwhile the things we appreciated years ago will be fond memories.

I just don’t see anything about the experience that makes me want to spend this kind of money. It has little to do with value. There seems like an overall lack of adventure. It just doesn’t seems like an interesting enough SW story, activity, setting or mood. They also dont need to lower the price point, they need to throw in a 4-6 day stay at another resort at a significant percentage off, have different age-group specific voyages ratings, be willing to spice things up and stop f’in charging for alcohol for a 3,000$ per person trip.

You really struck a chord when you said “Every person we interacted with was above and beyond” (on every level). This really is the core of what Disney Magic used to be (listen up Disney Management). When our daughter was very little she was smelling the flowers at Animal Kingdom. A gardener noticed her interest in the flowers so he cut a flower and gave it to her before heading to backstage. I will never forget that one small moment of all of our Disney experiences…”above and beyond.”

The cast members ALWAYS matter and are what make or break a Disney vacation experience. My wife and I always take the opportunity to submit a cast member complement whenever we interact with someone that truly made our day and that you can tell are very passionate about their jobs and what Disney entertainment stands for. For us that's been everything from photo pass photographers being wonderful and talented to capture the perfect photo of our kids, a guest relations member that helps resolve an issue, a character actor that goes above and beyond to entertain and embody the character, or even a custodian that was such a sweet man to our young daughters and even gave them a special "best custodian" sticker that he holds on to limited numbers of. These are the people that Disney needs to do everything to keep and acknowledge their efforts to the ideals that Walt laid the groundwork for years ago. Thank you, Tom, for using your platform to reiterate how important the cast members are to the Disney parks.

After hearing my die-hard Star Wars fan brother talking non-stop about it right after it opened ("hey did you hear about the new Disney Star Wars hotel? Is it any good? Sucks that I will never be able to afford it!"') the rest of the family and I saved and scraped enough to send him & I on the experience. We surprised him with the news during the holidays (he actually got emotional when he received the gift). We board at the end of this month to celebrate his birthday. Needless to say I've been very concerned with recent news and developments and have been keeping a close eye on the fate of the Halcyon. Nice to see that they are still keeping the experience at the same level as when it first opened. Sad to hear that the food has not improved. Of course my brother knows nothing of these "troubles" but I must admit, as the trip organizer, it has kept me on my toes as these issues started cropping up the closer we get to the trip. It will be interesting to hear his unbiased take on the experience. Thanks, Tom, for renewing my excitement & alleviating some of my concerns as we get closer to boarding.

Don't worry about the food. It's fine. It's like going to a great movie and not liking the popcorn. Starcruiser is about the entire experience. I went last May and I am still excited about my time there. It was really unforgettable. Tips: really engage with the cast. The more you do, the more you will get invitations to other things. You won't do everything. Like life, there are multiple storylines going at the same time. I went with a friend and, even though we were both Resistance, we got different experiences. Don't worry about room size. I was never in my room, except to sleep. Engage with in-room droid, D3-09. Ask for bedtime story. It's great!!! Really enjoy your experience!

Most other industries like hotels, cruses and airlines will slash prices to get it filled up. airlines will slash prices by up to 95% at the last few hours/minutes before departure to got the plane to max capacity. even selling a seat for $5 is still better then an empty seat. Tom, I first went to WDW in December of 1971 at the age of 13 so I guess you could say I grew up knowing the Disney you did. We went back 3-4 years in a row for summer vacation and I know what it’s like to experience the helpfulness, friendliness, cleanliness that put it so over the top of anything I had ever seen or experienced. Later, after getting married and having kids we started to go back so my own family could enjoy what I did. My point is that in this review you say that Disney Tokyo reminds you of your earlier years and although I’m happy for you, it saddens me a great deal since, a.) I’ll probably never make it to Tokyo and b.) that there seems no hope for Walt Disney World to return to its heyday. That’s just wrong. Why should the American-based parks not be the ultimate in every aspect? Are Americans unworthy of such treatment or is Disney getting away on the cheap because Americans now let that happen?
@SweatyOracle
@SweatyOracle Год назад
Americans, as a whole, have decided they will accept the lowest common denominator at the highest price. American park guests keep showing executives they they will go nuts for a horrible ride like dca’s Spider-Man the same as they’ll go nuts for a great ride. Disney knows they don’t have to go out of the way to impress most American guests because Americans have accepted the lowest common denominator of quality in art and life for decades. Americans have yet to vote disney out with their money so Disney has yet to improve their quality. It’s fvcked

disney hotels may have "come down" to universal hotels, but universal hotels are much much cheaper. And last time we were there (July '22), the rooms were cleaned every day at Universal's Royal Pacific hotel, while at Disney's Contemporary it was only every other day, though the room was more than double the price (and i won't even mention that at universal we got 4 unlimited express passes free with our room).

@@WDWNT Have you been to Universal lately? We had been there once (in 2011) when we hated it. But Disney forced our hand in 2022 when we were unable to purchase APs for our 3 week visit to Orlando. So we bought UK 14 day tickets and gave Universal another try. And surprise surprise, all 9 of us (ages 4 to 67) fell in love with the Universal parks. We spent 4 days there and decided that next time we'll spend an entire week at Universal. Why did we like it so much more this time? My daughter's theory is that Disney has dumbed down their rides, depending much more heavily on screens. And at the same time, Universal has made their rides a bit less dependent on screens, mixing them with real settings. Bottom line, we had a fantastic time at Universal and those unlimited express passes probably had something to do with it as well, in comparison to the horrible genie+ experience we had at the Disney parks.

16:08 They won't admit to the overpricing mistake because upper management still holds on to this archaic ideology of _"rate integrity"._ They believe in sticking with a price and near refusing to lower the price substantially out of fear that it will de-value the brand. As a cast member alum, I can say that won't de-value the brand. If anything it will allow people to love the Disney product even more. Only the upper management thinks it will hurt to lower the price. They truly need a reality check (by spending a week at the parks themselves along with other guests to see how their decisions affect the guest experience). There is absolutely nothing wrong with lowering the price of it and just admit that it was priced too high.

The _"rate integrity"_ ideology has been around for a very long time since I was working at MK in the 2000s, and upper management has only gotten worse with literally taking that particular business practice to heart (by heart I mean, how much more they can make on the bottom line), caring more about the net revenue at all costs.

I disagree and thought the shuttle to Batuu was really immersive and it was great to arrive right in the middle of Galaxy's Edge. If I had to wait an hour for the "box truck" like your experience, I'd be frustrated/upset as well but I thought it did a great job with making us feel like we were still in the Star Wars world. While we liked the lounge, we found the bartenders to be rather grumpy and not that excited about being there (We went in September 2022). We had waited at a table for 5 minutes and didn't know what to do because we didn't see a server. When I asked the bartender if I should order with them, she seemed a bit annoyed. Then a little later our server appeared. Our first experience to the lounge was not great. Finally, I think what people don't talk about is that your experience can be impacted heavily by other guests. One night, a family parked themselves at the sabaac table and would not get up and let anybody else have a chance. Even after the final scores were tabulated. They just ignored us and kept playing. Keep in mind that we were friendly and kept our distance but it was clear that we wanted to play and when we asked if we could play, they just ignored us. It took a cast member to gently suggest that others should be able to play. But even then we still had to ask to join a bit later and they stalled and didn't give us a chance until politely asked again. Also, there were TONS of kids playing with their remote controlled astromech droids in the lounge and basically taking over the place. Parents either weren't there or didn't seem to care. I wish more could have been done with badly behaving guests but I wonder if Disney didn't want to upset anybody that paid such a premium. Similarly, in the sabotage engineering adventure, we were unluckily grouped with a family, where the father wanted to banter and try to interact with LT Croy THE ENTIRE TIME. Similar to someone interrupting a comic at a show. Lt Croy did his best to deflect, but it was the most annoying thing to see someone want to be the star of the show and not let the cast present the story. We liked alot about the cruise, but think there is much to improve, especially based on the cost.

I can take a real cruise for a week, or spend a week at Disney World in a Deluxe hotel. And very simply I'm not a fan of the new series. They own the franchise--so why is Chewbacca the only legacy character? Just don't get it.

Disney has a fantastic product on their hands that even non Star Wars fans can enjoy. We had an amazing time and the cast members are fully aware that every interaction will be ingrained in your memory. I honestly wish this cruise was longer than it is. The only issue we had was that my husband didn't enjoy the food too much. However, the chefs were very accommodating with my daughter's allergies especially during our Captain's table dinner. It's amazing that when it comes to anything Star Wars, so many people are looking to find anything negative to talk about. I've seen so many videos posted about the Galactic Starcruiser being in trouble and being a failure, but they are never based on actual experiences. This video, and the other 2 reviews, show that this experience is done with great care about the love of Star Wars and respect for the guests in giving them an experience beyond expectations. If one of the resorts, or parks, is below capacity, it doen't mean it's a failure. Same thing with this. As a Star Wars fan since the beginning, something like this, or Galaxy's Edge was unimaginable. I look forward to doing this. Great review!

Yet another brilliant review Tom - thank you 👏 Like the best of Disney - you make sure your reviews evoke how it *feels* to be there, not just what you did/experienced. Your journalism is excellent and WDWNT always delivers on producing meaningful, insightful content. As I said on one of your other Starcruiser reviews (when you had to wait 30 minutes for the box truck!) - I find it incredible there’s no option to take a 5-minute walk and instead leave guests waiting an hour 🤦🏻‍♂️ I measured it on Google Maps - it’s literally 200 metres. Why didn’t they just build a covered walkway?! With an airport-style travelator if needed for accessibility. It’d have been a better experience, way quicker and not to mention more environmentally friendly. Could’ve used the same tech as the boarding shuttle, or something similar to Space 220, to maintain the suspension of disbelief. If the Starcruiser becomes repurposed one day, as perhaps a surcharged extension to Galaxy’s Edge - they will have to build a walkway anyway. Thanks again Tom - and I’m glad you and your parents had such an amazing time. I hope I get to take my family there someday too. The cocktails tasting session sounded particularly awesome! 😁

Tom, I appreciate your passion on the topic of the Galactic Starcruiser but to be honest I'd like to see it fail. Success would mean there are two Disney experiences -- one for the wealthy and one for everyone else. I want to see similar experiences but in Galaxy's Edge. These phenomenal cast members should be placed in various story lines within Galaxy's Edge where they can be enjoyed by everyone. Of course Galaxy's Edge is lifeless because Disney shortchanged it so they could build the Starcruiser! And to lower the price on this very high maintenance experience would mean the quality would suffer or Disney would only break even, which they won't find acceptable. One last point, how does an outdoor patio on a starship not take one out of the experience even more than a box truck?

No! The Pot roast is alright for the theme parks, yet the if I was paying the price for the Star Cruiser, I would storm up to the front desk and SCREAM like a "Karen out of control" and demand some sort of Freebe if I had to eat "The Potroast." My Great Aunt Pearl from Kansas could make an amazing Pot Roast, yet what they serve in the parks is "alright." So I am with you Tom. I was quite fortunate to work at Disneyalnd with some of the original "Club 55" Disneyland Cast members who taught me "Walt's" ways of doing things. They said in the early days they could not "wait" to come to work because they never knew what would be happing. They loved their jobs and went out of their way to make sure the "Guests" were happy. I never forgot it was my job to create the "magic" for each and every guest. Even if things were "messing up," we never let the Guests know about it, because Walt wanted us to make each Guest's day special. So it was our job to help them feel as if they were the most important person we ever met. I have to tell you Tom, it was sincerely a fortuitous time working at the "Happiest Place on Earth," yet it was also the saddest realization I could no longer afford to work at Disnelyand.. So I can understand how hard those Cast Members are at the Halceon. It sincerely takes quite a bit of effort to make this magic happen and Disney should be paying them quite a bit more. I so whish I could afford to take a trip on the Halceon, yet the number of days for the price does not fit any reasonable budget.

Disney could have a big thing if they price it better. This whole idea of an immersive experience could also be transportable to anywhere in the country. Also to point out a 2 night land cruise doesn't have to be just Star Wars. I bet there are some folks out there who would love a castle or pirate experience. Edited to add -- hehe I should have watched the whole thing before mentioning the above. My only real regret with this experience is that I, as a CM, cannot afford to enjoy the cruise myself. It is really sad to see what Disney did with the Star Wars franchise in the parks. I’ve been to restaurants Where they’ve had a robot server, I don’t understand other than being cheap why they couldn’t do that at their restaurants. I like the idea that you can build a droid and customize it it’s a really cool thing you can do but there’s nowhere in batuu To really use it. It would’ve been really cool of them to have a track somewhere where you could race against other people have one person who watches and time it to see who gets the best time for the day. also bounty hunters of batuu is weak it would’ve been really cool if you could actually have an actor congratulate you if you catch all 20 bounties it’s a lot of work and eat a lot of your time in the park. Or they give you a physical card with your picture on it making you an official bounty hunter once you collect all the bounties. I totally agree with you the star cruiser is over priced it makes it extremely hard for people who love Star Wars to be a part of something they love. I was lucky enough to go last year, and I had an amazing time, it was genuinely one of the greatest experiences of my life. But I started posting online about it, the amount of hate I got in the comments for saying something positive about it was some of the worst hate I've ever experienced on the internet. I was accused of being a "Disney influencer shill" A LOT and I don't even have more than 200 followers on any of my accounts LOL, mostly friends and family. If I replied and said that I was a real person with a regular day job , they would accuse me of being a bot or a paid actor. I've never seen such ridiculous stuff for just going to an experience. Same thing happened to my friends who went with me. No basement dweller online could believe that average people could go on the starcruiser, they all believed that only influencers were invited for free and that everyone else are just paid actors. How would that work? How would that be financially feasible? When I was on the starcruiser last year, all the passengers around us we're just average everyday people, lots of teachers, retirees, people who worked office jobs, people who worked retail, people who worked in warehouses and manufacturing and construction jobs. None of them were "millionaires", they just saved up. I don't know why but people online seem to assume that if you do something expensive, you just pull the money out of your rear end out of nowhere. Saving exists. I just don't understand.

I imagine it costs a lot to have the production value they’ve provided and they need to make back the cost of building the space. Another route they might take is to lower the price and then also lower the production value of the experience, which also just leaves customers unhappy too.

The day disney management values smiles over dollars is the day things will change. At this point If they figured out a way to charge for smiling they would do it too

I’d love to go but it’s too expensive for me. I wish they would do a dinner show every once in awhile for people like me who can’t afford the full experience.

Thank you for this!!! You said exactly what I’ve told everyone about my experience on StarCruiser. You are so correct that the cast were perfect. I compare it to going to a play and the actors pulling you out of the audience and calling you friend. ❤. Then it’s over and you’re dreaming about it. Nothing nothing is like in the parks anymore but it use to be like that 30 years ago in every land. Frontierland had people walking around doing things with you. Fantasyland of course had Princess but other characters that would ride the rides sometimes. Yes yes it was magical. I agree it probably should be a slightly bit cheaper. I enjoy the personal experience. I don’t want it to change. Thanks again for this . Update: Yes I agree about night 2. The food could have been as excellent as Victoria and Albert quality at the price point. My family loved dinner but we are vegetarian and required special ingredients. But. … one item we had for dinner came from the Sublight lounge. So ya they could have done better.

There are a lot of cast members who care..... but that level of caring and service starts to diminish when you start to feel like you're not supported , your not compensated correctly, and you're worried about your own living situation. It's not like they ask for much.
