No one has a problem waiting for Jones to heal. We have a BIG problem with him redefining the role of an interim champion and unilaterally deciding to relegate the interim champ to "just another contender" when it has ALWAYS been the case that the champion MUST fight the interim.

Why on earth would Aspinall vacate the interim belt when he is the one trying to be active? It’s Jones who is/was out injured and is now waiting for a 42 year old man 😂 Makes literally no sense.

It's the UFC that's forcing this to be a title fight when Stipe has no right to a title fight over an interim champion. Thats it. The problem with that statement is an interim belt can’t be defended considering it’s not a real title. Tom could face another opponent and if they beat him they could take Tom’s place which is next in line to fight for the title. There’s only one champion per weight class. Champions never say “I need to unify my belt with that interim title” lol.

If Tom was number 1 contender he'd be fighting JJ next, Tom is number 1+, why in the hell would he climb back down the ladder, if the ufc as a body won't honor the interim in such a way then it should stop selling the fans and fighters on our understanding of the progression and explain the correct way to the top, the new people trying to find a way to the top are more than fighters(as with most in this profession) , they are men and women sacrificing a lot to build this life, why should a champion be allowed to gate keep the top from people who most likely will stand a high chance of beating them.

The problem with Jon's rebuttal is that the interim belt is meant to be unified, not defended. Stipe is smart to elevate a fight with Jon over the title. Even a win against Jon without a title would mean exponentially more than if Stipe were to reclaim undisputed gold against Tom or someone else.

For everyone at HW Jones is the "prize" (Stipe is too old to be) none of the top contenders have a "name" on their resume to back up that belt with. IF they strip Jones, book Blades vs Aspinal for the vacant belt, how much worth would that belt itself have attached to it? That's essentially the definition of a paper champ. Aspinal needs Jones for that belt to matter. Look at Poatan in contrast, his belt run has all kinds of former champs associated with it going all the way back to Whitaker, who Izzy took it from and went on to defend many times. ..
