13-year-old me was in this audience somewhere, and I couldn't believe it! You have to remember, this was prior to the internet, and I was a kid. The idea that my favorite actor, who lived in *England,* was standing in front of me was overwhelming. My only regret is that I have no photos to commemorate that day. This was also before pro photo ops and digital cameras. My uncle snapped a photo of me standing next to Tom, but it didn't develop correctly. But I have the memory, and nobody can ever take that away from me.
Hi Teresa its so heartening to read your memory of seeing Tom Baker in The USA. Tom Baker is the best doctor who and a great actor. I wish he had made more films.
Oh! I'm sorry your photo didn't come out! I saw him in Boston, I think in '83 and I would have been 13 then too and my brother took a Polaroid of me next to him. At least there is this footage of the event to remember the occasion by, I've never found any from his Boston appearance.
All these years and Ive never looked for a video of this occasion, 14 year old me sitting in the audiance with @teresarothaar6225 and many of you here! Amazing and unforgetable.
I was there! a group of girls threw roses at his feet on his stage entrance; he picked one up, and placed it between his teeth! He then held onto it the rest of the show!
The narrator must have been on drugs.I'm a female and I don't think of Tom's Doctor as a father figure. I think of him as the charming, handsome boyfriend that might scare your parents just a little bit.
I thought he was going to say women wanted him as a husband or lover, but then he went as “father” and I figured must be his assumption that with a big nose women couldn’t fall in love.
Tom Baker was such a special Doctor. Such a awesome and cool guy. He seems to love his his fans as much as we love him! I remember a little bit from one episode of Tom's back when PBS ran the show out of N.Y. Then I started watching the new series because of that memory. I enjoyed a fair amount of the episodes and actors (especially Matt Smith ). Now BBC America is re-running some of Tom Baker's best episodes. I started watching them to see what all the fuss had been about with his Doctor. I fell completely in love with Tom's Doctor. He is soooo adorable. With his deep voice, curly brown hair and 6.3" height...he made such an imposing figure as the Doctor. I to wish he could have done a few more years. JNT was such an Ass for forcing Tom out of the show.
Tom Baker is so eloquent he really holds your attention when he's talking, literally about anything! 😀 I've become quite obsessed of late, keep watching the same vids 💜
@pumpkinofdoom Yeah that seems a little naive of the speaker. Look at those red roses thrown on stage and in his hand....women tend not to throw roses to men they see as father figures..... Even a female fan comments how many women had fallen in love with him. He was so overwhelmingly charming in this clip. We share another appreciation of him. :) [girlish giggle.]
Tom Bakerwas/is one of the BEST Doctors in Dr. Who history. Nobody will ever, EVER, top him. They can try as they might. But Tom will always be the top.
I don't think he's a separate thing for men and women like the announcer says. I think he represents a father figure and resilience to both men and women the same. The only difference is that some women and gay men might find him attractive.
Thanks for sharing this! I remember seeing it on MPT back in the day. I may even have a copy on VHS. Tom Baker, today's elder ambassador for Doctor Who.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is brilliant! I appreciate so much how well Tom speaks and how warm and articulate he is in being so modest, honest and so considerate to equally considerate fans in answering their questions and comments! Well shot & great sound quality! A huge Tom Baker as "THE DOCTOR" in Australia, I always got my homework done early enough so I was ready to watch Doctor Who at 6:30pm, and saved up my pocket money to buy Tom Baker card and even badges! It is so poignant for me to be able to catch up on these GEMS in the "Whoinverse" and so actually see on video that there were more people out there than I ever realised at the time with the same connection! GRATEFUL to share in this!
and indeed his comments are so poignant for all Artists / Performers / Sports Persons etc., who rely on being on stage, screen, galleries, museums, conventions etc etc in order to have a full sense of existence and identity!
Narrator "Popularity with women as a father figure" * 5 minutes later * A fan: "Did you ever assume you will have so many american fans, especially women in love with you?" LOL LOL LOL
he's like the homeless motorcycle rider who befriends you and makes you want to run away from your present life and search for thrills. Think Easy Rider.
@LilRonin01 What definitions are you using for killed and Baker? Two Baker Doctors, various ways that you could say they were nearly killed. And yes there are producer issues but I think Tom rather got stuck in the same rut that Hartnell did, he became the show and knew it, never a good thing.
Did this clueless male narrator just state that Baker's female fans regard him as a FATHER FIGURE??? And fanboys wonder why they're alone on Saturday night ....
@@kylethedalek Officially Tom declined due to having just left the show two years earlier and fearing typecasting... in reality, Tom has always been very sneering and dismissive of the other Doctors and would never appear on screen with them....or even join them onstage at conventions ...until very recently. Arrogance....plain and simple.
@@kylethedalek Why is he arrogant? I cant answer that. It is a common trait in actors although, to his credit, Tom does admit how intolerable he was back when he was the Doctor and about his alcoholism.. I think it's just a common jealousy thing regarding the other Doctors.... he prefers to be the only one.
