Tom Bodett and his new calling

He was young when he almost died, in an accident involving an electric utility cable and a considerable height. But Tom Bodett, by his accounts, went on to become a pretty good writer (of more than a dozen books and audiobooks), an NPR essayist, and Motel 6 spokesman. And now, at 68, Bodett has found another calling, as a woodworker. He talks with correspondent Faith Salie about crafting a new life in Brattleboro, Vermont.

From 99 - 2001 I worked tech support for CenturyTel and Tom was our customer. He called a lot because we only did rural areas before DSL so there were problems. I took a lot of those calls and he was always grateful even when frustrated. Now I am a cabinet maker. Had no idea he was a woodworker too.

I have loved Tom Bodett forever! Many, many, many years ago I had a partner who was a cross country truck driver and we basically lived on the road. During long nights of driving, one of the comforts was hearing Tom’s soothing voice telling us we’ll leave the light on for you. In my mind, I equate him to a short but sweet version of Garrison Keillor.

A caller called in and told Tom that he had just gotten married and for their honeymoon they took a cross country trip and every night they stayed at a Motel 6. Without missing a beat, Tom replied "wow, you really pulled out all the stops, didn't you?" Hysterical.

Many years ago I was listening to The End of the Road while driving inland from the California coast. I was totally engrossed in the story, hanging on every word. At the top of Mt. Madonna, I lost the radio signal. I had to wind down the East side until I could find a turn out so I could turn around and go back to the top to hear the ending. Tom Bodette was that good a story teller. Thank you Tom, for keeping the light on for all of us, and for your wonderful storries.

The only (big) thing missing (as a voiceover artist I'd like to know this but I think other people would too) is HOW he got the Motel 6 gig! Would love to have known about the audition process and how he was able to record in Alaska back in those days, when usually, certainly for large clients, you would have to be in LA or New York (or maybe Chicago?) to record in the studio, etc.

Great video! Didn’t know all this about Tom. I was fortunate enough to spend a few short days in Brattleboro in the early 90’s or possibly late 80’s. The nurses at the mental health hospital went on strike and I was recruited to work there during the strike so the patients would continue to be safe and received the care they needed. The town was a lovely community and I was able to take a tour of the covered bridges in the area. It was the time of the year when all the leaves were changing color. So beautiful!! You are very blessed, Tom, to be able to live there! And to have been able to spend time in Alaska!! Whoa, another place I’d love to spend time. Have a great life and God bless!!
