I thought the same thing when Keuter went out there wrestling heavyweight. They said he weighed in at 225 but he got manhandled by Kerkvliet literally. He was the top recruit in the country unbeaten 4×Iowa State champ. Brands did him a disservice by throwing him in there. IMO This will be his last season wrestling then he will just concentrate on football.
Well at least he did this type of interview after a loss. It was frustrating not to see him after last years loss to Penn State and then not doing one like this after the loss to Michigan. We want to hear from our Coach win or lose. This can be fixed, it absolutely can. We need to get more guys in there that fit the Iowa style. It’s clear a lot of these guys don’t. Go Hawks!
There’s an ebb and flow to these things. Iowa can get this sorted and turned around. Penn State has created and continues to create a great wrestling culture. You are must be very proud. I think it’s great for College wrestling. It will force these other Teams to get better. Hopefully the NIL fiasco doesn’t blow everything up and ruin it for all of us.@@askeen333

It is such an iowa thing to be so loyal to a coach who is clearly not keeping up with the changing times that you just fall behind. Guy sold his sould for a 197 lb 5 year old who may or may not be a menance to young women everywhere. That didnt work. His only complaint about the gambling probe is that hes upset they got investigated to start? The kids knew the rules and went around them. Wrestling is all about discipline. Unsure how much longer thisnguy can hang onto a truly premier job.

Thé Penn State guys seems to have a little bit better technique. I am old and Always think that Iowa can win simply because théy are Iowa but they are going to have to Make some changes if théy are going to bé able to hang with thèse Penn State guys.
They need better assistant coaching one that actually that have won something a assistant coach on there that hasn't won nothing and I'm not talking about Tom's brother and yes I'm talking about morning star for the life of me I cannot believe he's still there

yeah been saying Iowa needs a new direction. Guys seem not to preform peek in important matches from being prepared right. you have to be elite like spencer lee. Even Spencer last college match he was not prepared right.
The reality is Tom Brands is leading Iowa closer to Michigan and Ohio State than Penn State. The gap between Iowa and #1 is widening and Tom has no answers.
If PSUs 125 lb wrestler was 2nd ranked....weight class must be really weak nationally. I dont think he shot the whole match. Nagao/Bartlett/Haines/Messenbrink were nasty..dominating.
Yea Ayala basically slid by once and then posted on a knee and did absolutely nothing offensive for the next 6 ish minutes. Iowa fans saying a Penn State wrestler wasn't active is hilarious. Go check the take down numbers for all of the matches
I think Gabe is injured slightly and we don’t have a 184 pound wrestler. Which I don’t understand how that is possible. We lost Assad and Swafford, but both had just this year left, so who was Sal ed for next year at 184? Not a 165 pound Riggins.
At some point some needs to bring up the elephant in the room, brands brothers have to go, I grew up idolizing these guys but the performance that they are getting out of there wrestlers isn't cutting it, iowa was used to winning and now we have become accustomed to coming n second, penn literally justs keeps getting better and better, from there recruiting to there development of getting better every year while they are there, so many iowa wrestlers either stagnant or get worst, woods was supposed to win it and he loses to a guy he beat last year who dominates him this year, amd then a freshman whips his butt, Jacob Warner cassioppi the list goes on, I am tired of it, the brands brothers were lions so I am not taking absolutely anything away from there wrestling skills but i remember very few matches were they weren't trying to pin or tech u, the guys besides Lee obviously just do ground and pound and forget they need takedowns to win or they need to be on point that when someone attempts to score they can't, I am tired of iowa losing to penn and at this point as long as cael stays and brands brothers stay we will keep coming n second, I can't see a power house like Alabama football keeping there same coach for the last 10 years keeps getting them to the 2nd place trophy so why are we ok when it comes to wrestling, do we not deserve better too??????
Well said I love Tom and terry but they haven’t produced many guys that want to score points. The first three matches Iowa didn’t take a committed shot. The team wrestles a lot more like Morningstar than brands.
Yes, and a perfect example of that would be Alex Marinelli, who was a one trick pony, tried to push people around and then got crushed every year at nationals

2 Freshmen that were undefeated against non-PSU opponents, and are both top 10 in the country. It’s funny that no one really emphasizes the “True Freshman” part until they lose. I get it, people love PSU but damn everyone loves to make excuses on their behalf

In fairness he isn’t in charge of the lineup. If it were up to him I’m betting he’s in there. Given how tired carter has looked recently I think he had a solid chance at losing by decision and saving a team point.

I think Carter was solid last night against top 10 talent and I think Kennedy is better than Arnold. Carter is still clearly recovering from being sick for those 1-2 weeks. I also think he Arnold would have went up to brands and made his case, they would have thrown him in there. The same way he threw kueter to Greg. I don’t think Arnold wanted that match as bad as some think.
PSU nationally in wrestling is similiar to OSU in football...success breeds success..all the good ones want to play for winners/championships. Franklin needs to take lessons from Cael on what it takes to be ELITE.

Interesting all the penn state fans here lol. It’s a down year for a reason. They should have brands, Assad and cass in the lineup but the gambling stuff really threw a wrench in the plans. It wouldn’t have changed the outcome of tonight but PSU has been recruiting better and got a shit load of top transfers. It’s not coaching; it’s the recruiting. They recruit better and the fact that they have built up such an amazing wrestling room over a decade helps as well. Going to take a lot of money and some changes to catch up.
