Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six is a tactical shooter video game and the first in the Rainbow Six series. It was developed and published by Red Storm Entertainment in 1998 for the PC. It was ported to Mac OS, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Dreamcast, and Game Boy Color. An expansion pack, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Mission Pack: Eagle Watch, was released on January 31, 1999.

my mate and myself chucked the cartridge in the console 1 morning just to see what the game was like... we played it so much the n64 actually overheated and the game froze. the only time we stopped playing was to let the console cool down. Only game that ever did that to my console... needless to say.. we enjoyed the game very much!

I had so much fun playing the co op mode with my friend. We would fail a mission and the next day eating lunch at school, we would strategize how we would try the mission again. We couldn't wait to get out of school and try it again. Planning for the mission was half the fun
@Youtube_is_Trash
@Youtube_is_Trash 3 года назад
The planning wasn't just a mini game, it was meant to plan your and your teams route so that when you start the mission your npcs already know where to go. It also shows on your mini map the route you had chosen for yourself, kinda like a GPS.

My brothers and I rented this game from Family Video back in late 1998 and we couldn't stop playing it. It was super fun, realistic for it's time and nothing the world has ever seen before on consoles. We liked it so much we split our chore funds to purchase the game. Going back and playing it now, it isn't what I remembered but I still had a bit of fun. Love your videos, man.👍

@englishtimewithmr.chrisspanish
This was the first Tom Clancy game I've ever played and I really enjoyed it. After playing a lot of other first person shooters on the N64 it was kind of a nice change to play something that really requires you to plan everything out before you start a level. It makes it slightly more satisfying when you beat each level.

i love the Rainbow Six games, been a fan since RS3 on the PC, i was kinda shocked when i heard that the first game got an N64 port and didn't cut any of the gameplay mechanics, considering the PS2/Xbox ports of RS3 were simplified a whole lot. Usually N64 ports tend to be kinda lacklustre, but they really impressed me with this one, especially considering that the PS1 version of RS1 was just outright horrible.

Never played it on N64, but definitely played it on the PC. The strategy mode is what I did the most but got pretty decent at doing the missions myself. It took several weeks of dying over and over to switch from Unreal's run-n-gun style to this VERY strategized mode of play. Thanks for the video!

I remember owning and playing this on PS1 quite a bit. The learning curve felt quite steep coming off games like Goldeneye and Turok an the graphics on the PS1 were downright terrible, but I remember this game as quite a satisfying experience after getting the hang of things. I think I played Roque Spear on PC, though I never really felt the urge to pick up any other installment in the series.

Just played through this again in 2022 and read every briefing and piece of intel for each mission which I don't think I bothered to do when I was younger. This game is one of the most memorable I grew up with. My cousin picked it out and we would play all day and as far into the night as we were allowed. In fact, we played it so much it froze up all the time and the console would be very hot, but we would just hit reset and keep playing. For the time it was a beautiful game as far as graphics and the environment. No other N64 games ever matched up to it. We never did the planning part, just manually controlled the teams to complete the mission. Even playing by myself I would get one team so far ahead into a strategic position and switch to the other to catch up or flank. I remember his mom was really against violent games and we would get in trouble for turning on the blood feature. So basic by today's standards, but back then it was something to marvel at.

I'd wanted when I first heard about it for PC/Mac, but my family's computer was too slow to run it. The N64 version was a godsend, and I loved the crap out of it. It was one of the few games I could get my brother to play with me, and I probably completed most of the game doing co-op with him. One thing about it though is that I remember the box (NTSC version) having an Expansion Pack emblem on it, but I'm pretty sure this game had no enhancements for it.

I absolutely loved the Rainbow 6 Series (while it was still a tactical shooter so up until R6:3 Athena's Shield) on PC and I feel like I would never give that kind of tactical shooter a chance on any other system. With that bias, though, I must say that the game on the 64 looks pretty good INDOORS as you noted. Outdoors it looks horrendous when even the PC version looked kind bad outside. But the controls don't look half bad. I have your playlist of videos playing in the background as I study though I have specific videos I go back to watch purposely, such as this one. Thanks for the plenitude of great content you have.

This version is much easier then the PC version and I recalled it not being a bad port at all. As for the lack of deathmatch, if you played it on the PC back in the day you knew it wasnt so much of a deathmatch as more of either a last man standing or last team standing layout. Very, very tense stuff back then but honestly I think it was a smarter choice for the n64 to dump it.

It was one of my first shooters, and I absolutely miss the complexity the original game had to offer, as well as Rogue Spear and RS3. I am sad to see that today, its modern title is not much more than a Counter Strike-like multiplayer only twitch shooter with a little atmospheric destruction as a theme. Same thing for Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell; all watered down to where the game play is barely distinguishable from the originals.

Biggest criticism of R6 in magazines around release was the lack of deathmatch as far as I can remember. Inevitably it was compared to Goldeneye, and the other 4 player FPSes - though these were essentially THE appeal of the N64, I'd argue. Rare were the smartest developer on the console right? So they end up shoving 4-player FPS into Conker, DK64, Banjo Tooie, almost everything post-Goldeneye. Rainbow 6 is a great game but was probably a really bad choice for a port to consoles as that planning mode is just made for a mouse. Still seems insane to me that Starcraft was ported to the N64, for the same mouse-centric reason. Most people with a 64 had broken controllers from Mario party by this stage anyway, so precision was a joke
