Spent a week at Bassholmen in 2000. Quite a nice place

That particular flat stern model is highly unusual. I've seen one before and it was made for victorian age english lords and ladies going on their picnics. Perhaps that is why that sail is also unproportionally small to the boat. The sails aren't set very high at all, in fact a bit of the tack corner canvas is preferably wrapped around the stick that is put through the gunwale board, so the yard is pointing a bit downward at the front and the luff is as tight as can be. It is the first mate's ("halskar" = "throatman") job to keep look behind the sail as he sits with the corner in his lap, ready to let go the bowline and pull on the luff edge in a gust. That stem shape is legendary but its ancestor was much more beautiful. The straight stem "new model" post 1830 was an answer to a shortage of broad boards of satisfactory quality because of export to Britain for the Napoleonic War. The old model "Krumstevning" had three to five strakes and the corresponding new model five to eight or so. The old model had twist hewn first strakes as well. I'm happy to report that traditional boats like this are having quite a renaissance here in Norway.

You still see them sailing around up here on the west coast of Norway. Usually sailing and rowing, between wooden boat events We have a couple in our local museum which are brought out again in the summer and sailed in our fjord.
