Absolute gentleman! He came and sat with me at a pre Cricket meeting dinner I was attending I was about 20 years younger than anyone else in the room & he said I looked out of place & needed company & talked about club cricket during the meal & not about himself he made my day!
Both Tom and CMJ are sadly no longer with us. Tom Graveney the most elegant and graceful batsman and good slip fielder to boot. CMJ calm, authorative, knowledgeable. Fine commentator and journalist. R.I.P. both of them.
At age eleven my first experience of Test match cricket: Trent Bridge 1957 playing the West Indies, we arrived just as Tom Graveney came into bat, what a wonderful day, I can still visualize the beauty of some of his driving - especially in the cover region. He was still at the crease when we left and was180 odd runs to the good. I then spent years trying to replicate those strokes, as may be imagined without much success! I am old enough to have seen Tom Graveney play cricket. This was in the early 1980s when he represented an Old England XI against an Old Kent XI. He didn't score too many but he batted long enough to show the elegant front foot batsman he had been.
Had the pleasure to meet these two when CMJ organised his third and final cricket cruise on the Canberra in 1986 My all time hero Dennis Amiss was also one of the cricket celebs- best two weeks of my life to meet, spend time with and play in the sport of your hero not many can say that and im so grateful
Now thats a co-incidence, I also was on that cruise and it is one of my lasting memories. If I remember correctly Chris Cowdrey, Jim Swanton, Tom Graveney, CMJ and Dennis Amiss. I will always remember opening the batting with Dennis in Gibraltar and then we went onto play in Corfu and I got stun by a wasp when I was fielding in the outfield and I think Mr Graveney pulled the sting out of my leg. Happy days. Just wondered if you played in either of those games? I still have the team photo from Corfu.
@@chriswood7926 Wow yes indeed I remember you sir. You batted very well in the deck games There was a party of travel agents on board if I remember correctly. Chris Cowdrey was caught in the deep in Gibraltar and Tom and Sir Dennis knocked the runs off.We needed about 120 from memory. It was a gravel outfield. Yes I opened the bowling and will never forget i had 0/8 off three balls in Gibraltar as i could hardly run into bowl I was so nervous. Fortunately i got a wicket with the last ball of the first over and ended up with 4 overs 2/16.. I met Sir Dennis at a cricket dinner a few years later in Southport....

@@chriswood7926 Spot on sir yes thats me impressive memory....The ONE thing i didnt get to do unlike your goodself (lucky sod.....)was to get to bat with Sir Dennis but I remember when the ship was docked in Naples i spent probably 20 minutes/half an hour bowling to him on deck just the two of us were there, fantastic for me... i remember the biggish lad a Geordie with glasses also a travel agent think his name was David. Did you stay in the travel industry. Ive just taken early retirement after 35 years from BT. Had only been there 18 months when we were on that cruise shows just how long ago the trip was Ironically i went on two further cricket cruises in in 88 and a christmas one in 89 Bob Willis and Bob Taylor were the cricketers and BBC Journalist Pat Murphy did the CMJ job. Funny enough although nothing came close to meeting Sir Dennis the latter two trips with the two Bobs were equally as good. Remember playing in Gibraltar on New years day 1990.......Amazing memories
@@dlamiss My cricketing hero was Geoffrey Boycott and I remember walking out to bat in Gib with Dennis and I said to him "good luck" as we got to the wicket and he said that he once said that to Boycs in a test match and Boycs reply was "Mr Amiss it is not a question of luck, it's a question of ability" I'll never forget that!! I managed to get an invite to Sir Geoffreys house in 2017 to celebrate 40 years since his hundred hundred at Headingley and I was completely overawed to be in the presence of such greatness. What a night that was!! Yes I'm still in travel just coming upto my 60th birthday, it's always been in the blood. Great to hear from you, you've made my day. Great man his nephew David did a lot for North East cricket ie Durham 👍 I'll remember Tom Graveney did a lot for the caller's Pegasus series in Jesmond North East International cricket 🏏 as we'll great 👍guy
Chris Law - I never saw Tom Graveney bat but according to what I've read , he was a hell of a batsman .. I did however hear CMJ commentate and was a typical English commentator - one of the best in the world. CMJ told a great story during the 1990 - 91 World Cup in Australia. He explained the origin of Tony Dodemaide's surname . He played on and off for Australia. CMJ explained the surname came from the sugar plantations in the West Indies. Apparently after a days work , the husband and wife would gather in the Drawing room after dinner . The husband would say to his wife : " you do the butler and I will do de maid !! ""....
