Tom Hanks, iconic actor-producer-director-screenwriter, has added to his list of accomplishments: author. NPR host Peter Sagal joins the two-time Academy Award-winner to discuss his love of writing, the creative process, and his debut collection of short stories Uncommon Type. Connected by the recurring motif of a typewriter (Hanks is an avid collector of vintage typewriters and owns over one hundred of them), Uncommon Type includes stories about a woman adjusting to life after a divorce, a man immigrating to New York after escaping civil war, a billionaire and his assistant on an adventure, and a tale perhaps all too familiar to Hanks: an actor enduring a press junket.

It's true that movies can move, lift, and embrace.

If this man ran for president, he'd win, no problem.

I read Kirk Douglas autobiographies and they were inspiring and interesting.

I know what it is to be in THE ZONE, and not eat, lose track of time. I also know what it is to laugh out loud to myself, realizing that I really created a great scene. The more I thought about it, the more I laughed.

Most reviews are bunk. I don't listen to reviews. I see films that resonate with me and are my genre. Many films that have some of the best comedic scenes, are not comedies. They are dramas.

Kirk Douglas’ book is The Ragman’s Son, not The Rag Picker’s Son.

So he likes writing but what's the art of it or purpose.

I wonder if Hanks still thinks we will probably be ok.

Note to the camera man: When you see a bright white spot on a persons head, it means you're an amateur. Return your paycheck!

I take it back. Clearly there is no camera operator. This was poorly done because some idiot didn't want to pay for camera operators.

@@MikeRoberts1964 Sorry man. I was mostly just teasing. I use to work with a guy who had a bottom of the grade HD camera. No manual iris so his work often blew out like what you see here. Also maybe due to the type of image chip or the compression, the colors always looked flat - like you see here. I felt for him but I never got to say "this looks like shit" because I knew he could not afford any better. In fact, at the time, I was still using standard def professional DVCams and my footage always looked better than his HD footage - which is ridiculous, right? That should be absurd, but the fact that my SD footage looked better than his HD footage says a lot about just how bad his camera was. If this is your footage, I apologize. I think it just triggered me because it reminded me of what I could never say to my friend.

Tom Hanks is lying, I just watched the interview with Johnny Carson and he never said that. But he did bring up the autobiography

It's not lying...it's imagined reality...which can be a real thing.

@@jbbevan True...And to him, that happened. When I was in the 4th grade, I had a young, hip Teacher (I thought she was old at the time, but years later saw a class photo my Mom had saved and Mrs, Allison was maybe 25, which IS old to an eight year old) and I remember vividly her playing "Hotel California" to us in music class...I had this almost photographic memory of the room and where I was and where she was and the music. One problem........The album didn't come out until I was in grade 6...I only realised this when I was an adult...So, where did that memory come from?
