But if you take a serious enough consideration, I believe you will find out many interesting things about movie's performance! Try out Shawsank Redemption's Tim Robbins performance in 1994 and Micheal Douglas performance in Falling Down (1993), I thnk you gonna see the difference here. The point is not about hard work, since other actors also put lots of effort in their performance too, we must jugde on the quality of the performance, dont let anything else let in :)

Citizen Kane from 1941 is still considered the best movie ever made by most critics and people alike, but I'd say if you can bypass the color aspect, 1939 is the best year for the Oscars overall: Goodbye Mr. Chips, Gone with the Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Ninotchka, Of Mice and Men, The Wizard of Oz, and Wuthering Heights.
