It tells the story of a man about to be executed, thinking of home for the last time.

Unusual for them to miss the song's premise. Until quite recently I had thought it was an original but I believe it may be a cover of a Country song from the US. No discernible Engelbert but mention of him reminds me that I grew up thinking he and Tom were cousins. It's something not even my child mind would have conjured up, so it's either true, something they made up for a joke or an urban myth. Any ideas, anyone?

@@alanoakley3242 Actually Tom Jones and Engelbert don't even like each other. Tom Jones was a very good friend of Elvis though and ironically both of them sang great versions of this song.

You must play the visual recording of Tom Jones singing this song. Tom Jones literally lives the music he sings. It is the best way to fully get the message of this song!

I've seen several reactions to this song and everyone misses the meaning of 4 gray walls, guard, Padre, walk at daybreak, buried under the old oak tree. A few have caught on that the guy's in prison but that's all. I wonder if people today don't watch the types of movies and TV shows I grew up with.
