Keenly feeling the loss of his cherished friend, Tom Jones sang two of Elvis' hits - "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and "Can't Help Falling In Love" - on Bert Sugarman's "Midnight Special:when he hosted the show on March 24, 1978. The quality issue arises because this is a transfer from VHS. But the emotion is clear and the sound is OK. At 38 years old, Jones puts it all on the line to sing Elvis' signature finale song of his concerts and hits FOUR high notes on the ending! I'd like to see what singer today could ever attempt such a feat and accomplish it the way Jones did here! He was a spectacular singer! Still singing today to the world but with nowhere near the explosive powerful voice he displays here. There'll never be another Tom Jones!

@Djm8520 I am a life long Tom Jones fan. He is still a good singer but not the singer he used to be. His tone has changed and he no longer goes for those big notes. He is still amazing. He always will be. He will go down in history as the greatest male singer of all time in my book.

I was actually lucky enough to see Tom Jones live in person in the spring of 1978 in Fort Worth, Texas in the round. I was actually less than 30-40 feet from Tom during the concert! He did this same segment at this show too. One of my best concert experiences, and I've see them all. There is an old saying, I may be old but I got to see all the cool bands! True!

I've seen a higher resolution recording of this (borderline HD for the time) - in it you can see that Tom Jones is crying when singing the second song: Elvis was his close friend and he sorely missed him.

Tom Jones has a darker deeper voice and more focused but Elvis's voice was just breathtakingly beautiful his gorgeous timbre and mellow tenor voice will never be equalled
