The comparatively minor Motown star Tom unashamedly copied vocally, was Brook Benton. Tom talks about this in some early interviews and also, in the very early and pre-star days, legend Jerry Lee Lewis was Tom's biggest influence.
So, so true, Tom has a deeper understanding of musical composition and harmony and the way he compliments gracefully despite having such a massive talent on a par with Wilson, shows he's a gentleman as well as having soul in his veins.
He was definitely considered a bow-tie wearing square in the mid 1960s thru to 1988, when he morphed and appeared leather-clad and singing his big Prince hit, Kiss. Before ultra-shrewd and ultra-able manager, Gordon Mills, discovered Tom singing in a Welsh pub in 1964, Tom wanted to be a leather-clad out and out blues singer. It was Gordon who persuaded him to sing middle of the road songs as this was where the big money was to be made.
@@stuartleggat7176 Not at all seeing how he’s “sQuArE” in the slightest and it must have been a vocal Minority as he’s always been loved greatly worldwide! Him wearing a bow tie makes him even cooler!
THIS!!! Should really have more likes. Because in one sentence you have summed up a large part of our history! Imagine if this was someone's Doctoral thesis..I would bring in a post-it-note with this sentence and the link to the performance slam it on the professor's desk, then...drop the mic (yes, I brought a mic w/me for just this purpose. I know, I'm weird) and do the Milly Roc dance out of the office, whilst rapping: "I Milly Rock on any Block" LOLOL!
Well said and very true. Pickett and Little Richard did that in their duets with Sir Tom. Black artists don't give that ultimate sign of respect for no reason unless they mean it. With Jones they definitely meant it when they uttered the words, " Sing the song son/ sir".
He holds his own I'd put them on a par, check him out with stevie wonder and little Richard, it's great that we can see this stuff, thank god for the Internet
@Heir apparent Nah...He doesn't not even close. The "Gravelly voice is the soul". Tom was simply a Pop singer with a soulful sound and not a soul singer. This was nice and I'm sure people like yourself would put this in the soul category. But nope. No soul hits to speak of. This was a produced special and as good as Tom is he really couldn't handle with the likes of FULL Wilson Pickett or a Joe Ligon of the Mighty Clouds of Joy, or Dennis Edwards of the Temptations and definitely not a James Brown. Who by the way challenged him to a dance contest. Tom wouldn't do it. He didn't want that heat. When Tom Jones is on the Soul Charts with his own hits then we'll he dub him a soul brother. By the way, its not unusual (pun intended) for several of our White brothers. Hall and Oates, went to #1 with I Can't Go For That and had several "SOUL" hits. You are entitled to your opinion. Tom Jones according to reports he has sold 100 million records in his career and that puts him in the legend category. That's fine. In the 80's he tried to remake "Kiss" by Prince and its still a running joke in the Black community. As Ms Coleman said...have several seats.
Till they got to the bar! I just read this in Tom's book. Tom complimented Pickett's solo and WP was dismissive. He implied that he'd toned the number down and he'd sold himself out by appearing on Tom's show! Then it got worse. I won't repeat what Tom said Pickett had said--but it was racial, ugly and very sad. Still--gotta love these rock and roll biographies, so interesting and historical.
@@keldraalpine7091 Read the same book, and I think I've heard Tom mention it in an interview. Not a pleasant interaction after the show to say the least. Still, watching the way Wilson tears it up, ya coulda fooled me, lol.
This clip proves several things: soul has NO color!!. It also proves when you’re really good, u don’t need 20 dancers, pyro technics, etc, u just need pure talent! Thanks for postin a clip of 2 great singers doin what they do best: kill the crowd with raw sweaty gritty soul.
You can sing that man, soul has no colour, it's great to see two men just sing and enjoy the experience and it looked genuine, so much fuckin hate and racism nowadays
Racism is so stupid! There is only one race... HUMAN. We have pigment varieties that have very superficial differences. It's like looking at a litter of kittens and judging their worth by what color fur they have.
Tom invited guys most wouldn't think of. He hit em' all up to star on his TV program and they truly appeared to appreciate his openness and kindness. Tom is one of a kind... After more thought on this subject of America's Black Stars appreciating being invited on Tom's shows, and while that was most certainly true, there was great appreciation coming from Tom's side as well. He said he loved these stars as a boy and young professional. So the thought of actually performing with these stars must have bowled him over...
@@kingy002 Tom Jones/Little Richard Rock and Roll Medley from his tv show is an all time classic (along with his duet with Jerry Lee Lewis also). The man is awesome.
I was kid when music like this was everywhere, at that time it never occurred to me that music would never get better than this, that I was growing up in a musical golden age that would never be repeated. I was so very lucky
Sir Tom is a true gentleman. He bought me a drink on my 40th birthday in Victoria BC. His son his manager & he were at the restaurant me & my girlfriend were celebrating my birthday at. She tried to buy them a drink, but they bought one for us instead. Then we all said "good night, nice sharing the Waterclub restaurant with you" . Cool guy!
@Bo Bo Knows Whose black life was being harmed by Tom Jones? He was just showcasing black artists on his show who might never have gotten that much exposure otherwise. Pickett as a black man had a right to be angry, but not with a man who only treated him with respect.
Wilson Pickett was being an ass plain and simple. Tom Jones had nothing but LOVE For black artists and ALWAYS gave them the recognition openly that he felt they deserved. He showcased them regularly on his show and at that time during prime time, in those days that was a BIG DEAL. And that respect and recognition was reciprocated from black artists back to Sir Tom. Pickett was a nasty piece of work when he wanted to be and his reputation as a extremely difficult and at times confrontational person to work with was well documented. His beating at the hands of some members from the Hells Angels probably had an interesting back story which likely involved his attitude and running off at his mouth to the wrong people.
It is always amazing to watch talented people like this do what they were born to do. That was the best version of Hey Jude I have ever heard. They actualy made an iconic beatles song better...live...on stage...at the end of a medley...that's insane!
ΑΥΤΟ ΑΚΡΙΒΩΣ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΑΥΤΟ ΠΟΥ ΣΧΟΛΙΑΣΑ ΣΤΑ ΠΡΟΣΦΑΤΑ ΣΧΟΛΙΑ ΜΟΥ ΣΤΙΣ 22/08/2020 ΑΓΑΠΗΤΕ ΦΙΛΕ that's exactly what I am talking about in my recent comments . YOU ARE TELLING NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH MY DEAR FRIEND ! [22/08/2020 ΩΡΑ ΕΛΛΑΔΟΣ 14:30 ΚΑΛΟ ΚΑΙ ΕΥΛΟΓΗΜΕΝΟ ΜΕΣΗΜΕΡΑΚΙ Have a good and blessed noon ]
What really gets to me is the joy and purity they express, simply enjoying themselves without mumbojumbo, which is showbiz at its best...well done gents....
Just when you thought something like this might never exist, Tom Jones and Wilson Pickett sing "Hey Jude", and you thank whatever you might speak up to, that you were able to exist in the same time as this music. Powerful and maybe the only two people who could produce a version that dwarfs the Beatles
Actually Tom Jones says Wilson Pickett was very rude to him after the show when they spoke, telling Tom "that was an excuse for rhythm and blues", and he also told Tom "before long we are not going to need you, We'll have our own tv shows. Very talented singer yet quite ungrateful , Jones gave him lot's of exposure and that's the thanks he got.
It's interesting to see that the more amped up Pickett gets, Jones gets more into it and starts yelling a little louder too. You could be buried in ice and thaw out instantly with Pickett's enthusiasm.
This certainly proves that soul has no colour. i wish they had tv like this again. This is why we use to enjoy sitting around with family and watching the television. talent like this .no bad language,or provocative dancing, just pure entertainment.
Tom Jones's regular speaking voice in his natural welsh accent and his singing voice are so MASSIVELY different, it's insane to imagine any of his music comes from him when he's just casually speaking.
Although The Welshman was, without doubt, a great blues singer, the original "blue-eyed soul" singers were Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, The Righteous Brothers. "Georgie Woods, a Philadelphia radio DJ, is thought to have coined the term "blue-eyed soul" in 1964, initially to describe The Righteous Brothers, then white artists in general who received airplay on rhythm and blues radio stations."
Tom has confessed that this was the music he truly loved. Like Elvis, he sold out and recorded pop trash to get on the charts, but Tom's first love was clearly gospel and R & B soul music. Thanks for posting this gem.
When you don't have anything respectful to write then don't write anything at all, you were not raised right, and today there are artists who collaborate with other singers from different genres that does not mean they sold their soul to the devil, it just means they want to unite the world, and bring people together. That is what music does.
One thing I love about Tom's duets with other great artists, is that because he is so great and doesn't hold back, he pushes his partners to up their game and give it their best. The result is almost invariably magical.
I know exactly what you mean. He always supports his guests, lets them take the lead, then pushes them to their limits. He puts the music before his ego. Watch how he always watches the artist to follow their lead, and then takes it to the next level when it's his turn. Not all singers can or will do that.
What a pity this show was cancelled! I thought that Sir Tom was the best show host ever the way he blended in with all the celebrity singers! I remember watching him as a teenager with my parents and four siblings! We really loved the show! Brought so much joy into our family living room during the troublesome times during the Vietnam War! Shame the other two networks had to ruin it for Sir Tome Jones.
@@erichnussbaum of course the original is great. I love the energy of tom Jones and Wilson Pickett. When I was in the Philippines, this market girl was singing this song and I was listening. When she stopped I continued and we sang at least half of the song together 😁
Tom Jones is a powerhouse, he can sing anything with anybody and sound amazing and makes it seem effortless, he truly is a LEGEND. For me Mr Jones has the best voice in the business and is the most incredible singer ever. What a performance
Music certainly doesnt discriminate but indeed unifies. Just imagine if the world went to war with music there'd be alot more lives saved. Thank you Mr Jones and Mr Pickett. Angels from heaven sent to bring peace in this world with music.
Now that is a team up, Tom Jones and Wilson Pickett, their voices compliment each other this is more evident when they sing "He Jude", they put some good Soul into Hey Jude.
Jones looks about 17 in this video, and in the best way - he still has that infectious enthusiasm of a teenager. Fabulous singer. (So's Pickett, of course.)
Wicked Pickett and Sir Tom Jones. TWO LEGENDS!!!! SUCH AN EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCE!!!!! Phenomenal vocalists!!!!! 🎶🎵🎼🎶🎼🎵🎼🎶🎼🎵🎼🎶🎼🎵🎼🎶🎼🎵🎼🎶🎼🎵🎼🎶🎼🎵🎼🎶🎼🎶🎙🎤 Continue to RIP Wilson Pickett⚘⚘⚘
WOW!!!! This is just about the best TV show I've ever heard of!!!! I've seen the Tom Jones duets with - Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles - and NOW Wilson Pickett!!!! What a great TV show!!!
Wilson Pickett looked he could explode anytime, and TJ rode the outer rim of his explosiveness just perfectly awesome performance by both artist. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
My parents are huge fans of Tom Jones so I've seen him in Vegas 7 times as a kid growing up. He truly gives it his all each and every time he's on stage. The man is amazing!!
Brilliantly brilliant brilliance. So sad Wilson and Tom didn’t get to do this again and again. You can feel the soul from American gospel and Welsh male voice choirs thru this..
I have to say I watched a documentary where Nina Simone referred to Tom Jones as a "joke" For the LIFE of me I have tried to see just WTF was she talking about ? May God rest her soul! As a person of color I find his man electrifying & I simply LOVE how tackles any song with this air of soul! His voice just has this captivating quality and he feels the music in his body this is clear to see! He rides that rhythm like any soul singer would & he does it very naturally it never seems like a put on it is his voice it is his gift he is an amazing male presence & it is a beauty to behold! .
Tom Jones has that voice and soul that seems natural to him..but I believe that he had to work a little harder with Wilson Picket ..still I see the respect between them...I notice that black people usually have great respect for people with real talent. They are all about the quality..I am guessing that Nina Simone felt Tom Jones was a poser...and given the time ( I was a child then)...she took offense.....I marvel at sir Tom 's voice..even today. But again,Picket made him work a pinch harder to keep up..in my opinon..and it is not about the voice..there is something else.
I have gone speechless, how is it possible that these two people belong to mankind as I think I do? My whole being caressed and shaken in a-stand-in-applause-forever-performance.
Better than anything we have today. Artists performed naturally and with feeling. Auto tune, pyrotechnics, and electronics weren't even a concept then.
They complement each other..perfectly....just like I did with my uncle Sam....He was a Sierra Leone chap and me, white kid.... Loved him for years....Never stopped loving that guy and what he did for Manchester. (That is in England, for the benefit of you deadheads.)
I agree....it would have been an absolute honour for Tom Jones to have the opportunity to sing with the incredible Wilson Pickett. No doubt Mr Jones picked up a few "soul tips" from the legendary Mr Pickett!
