Tom loves to spark conversation and if you really listen to him, you'll see that actually try to get people to be more accepting, less offended and therefore more united. I know the "I hope my son grows up to be my daughter" offends a lot of people but think about it for a moment: being transgender means years of struggles to find out who you are, then you have to face some prejudice and adversity from your social environment. Transitioning to finally feeling like your body matches how you feel means taking hormones (most of the times injections) the rest of your life, having painful surgeries with risks, problems finding a partner and never being able to have a biological offspring. Who wants this for their kid?
