In, perhaps, the most poignant section of his speech Wing Commander Tom Neil describes the bravery of two members of his Squadron; South African Percy Burton and Irish Pilot Officer 'Bryan' Meaker who died in an engagement on 27th September 1940.

Stumbled on Meaker's and Burton's stories a few weeks ago when I found Meaker's grave in my local churchyard. Such a sad story and such a let down that Burton was denied the VC on protocol. He didn't mention it in this video but Neil and Meaker were told on the 25th Sep that they would be the first members of 249 to be decorated and both were to receive the DFC. Meaker didn't live to receive it and his parents accepted it from the King on 8th October. Neil went right through the war and died in 2018 aged 98.
