I love the original but Tom really puts emotions to it. Suddenly you realize the meaning behind the lyrics. Matty's such an amazing songwriter. Fenomenal, both versions!!
That is exactly what I was thinking. I never saw the weight of these lyrics...I have to credit Matty for writing such heavy songs...you just can't tell sometimes because they sound so fun on track.
I love Tom Odell's ability to make any song his own. Also, it's okay to like both the original and the cover, one doesn't have to be "better" than the other. This is NOTHING like the original, it might as well be his own song.

This version completely alters the surface meaning of the song. Not completely changing it, just brings forth a different feeling and emotion that you wouldn't initially get from the original, which is great. I love when musicians explore songs they cover enough to bring something that is buried to the forefront. Both versions are brilliant because the song is brilliant. So many layers.
this is a real cover. Tom has changed the original version and did it with his emotions, his heart, his own way. it is so different than the original and i love that. still love the original though
This arrangement is stunning - all the musicians in the room are pouring their hearts into the performance and you can actually hear the emotion in the strings. When that emotion is able to be achieved despite the song not being your own, I think that's what makes a cover commendable.
I love the 1975 so much but this take on it brought tears to my eyes. I could feel the heartbreak in the lyrics much more profoundly in this version. The original is more of a juxtaposition between melancholy lyrics and a catchy beat. Both are wonderful.
both artists are incredibly talented, just because tom made it in his own way doesn't mean it's shit, and it doesn't mean the original is shit because you like this version more, everyone has an opinion, get over it
Tom is by far one of the most underrated British artists out at the moment. Not yet heard a poor song from him and I think you'll find he has been writing songs for other artists too. This cover of The 1975 is awesome.
A cover isn't even supposed to be exactly the same as the original. To all you people hating on Tom because you don't like his style- grow up. If you don't like it then why are you even in the comments section? Go listen to The 1975 instead. Or at least have some respect for the people that like this style. Tom Odell is a very talented guy and his version is just as beautiful as the original.
Fuck, Tom Odell never disappoints me. His performance is always something else. So rich and tangible that you can feel the weight of the lyrics fall, and his emotions transform the song wholly.
In this spoiled world of music, such a gem is greatly underrated and not enough Tom in the media. In The musical world where now there is nakedness, violence, money, I look at this boy without tattoos and listen with the greatest pleasure. Thank You Tom for your music.
As a Tom Odell fan I can say that both versions are good, they just give different moods. The original is more like a dance party song, and this one is like a movie song.

I LOVE the original and everything the 1975 makes but all I could think about after hearing this is that Tom should cover the whole album tbh it'd be really interesting to hear his take on it

Abaigeal Fire condivido pienamente. Tom ha un modo tutto suo di fare musica ed ha una voce molto particolare, può piacere e non piacere. Io, mi sono totalmente innamorato delle sue canzoni, specialmente dell'ultimo album. Sono una droga oltre al fatto che mi rilassano tanto quando sono stressato. Poi madonna, diventa un tutt'uno con il pianoforte, si "fonde" con i tasti, come se fosse una parte di se stesso. Peccato solo che quando verrà a Milano sicuramente non riuscirò a vederlo a causa della distanza molto elevata da dove vivo io. Che dire, poi c'ha uno stile nel vestirsi molto particolare, molto inglese direi ;)
Love love love this cover! Both the original and this brings so much emotion but in different ways! He really made it his own which I think is fantastic! Would love to hear him cover somebody else, his sweet ghastly voice would go sooo well with it
RealTeaforTv okay maybe it isn't, but to me personally, whenever I listen to his voice (which is a lot because I love his music) I get this feeling of heartbreaking emotion that i feel resembles that of a ghost or a spirit in a sense! This is definitely not a bad thing, it is what makes him unique, it is what makes me love his music
I don't know about the otherworldly component, but his music is definitely heartbreakingly beautiful. I have a tendency to listen to his new songs/covers on repeat for days untill I can't stand them for a while..
