im really stoked that my skate comp advert was in the sidewalk issue with tom penny on the front cover (the cover on the right with the speaker on the ramp). what a legend
Here's a story. Short version. The year 92. In Germany for world championships. I'm English so I already knew Tom. But he was unknown then. Outside the arena, a crap street course, and a largeish mini ramp. A midi. I get there as Tom gets to ramp. I see him and think, here we go, this should be good. To where Tom, a tiny kid in massive new deal jeans, tiny wheels, starts destroying the ramp. You could hear the jaws drop, and the look of bewilderment on faces, as he pulls tricks even some pros hadn't started doing. Late flips, switch flips, switch oldies etc. It was incredible and nearly brought a tear of pride to my eye. Like a proud parent. I'm not sure deathbox (flip) had even picked him up yet.
I would love if Penny went full Hollywood for like 15 minutes. Tell all the stories, answer all the questions, everything we want to hear. Take the cameras along, and of course a gnarly video part. Then, once everyone blew their load, he just goes back to being the international man of mystery he’s always been.
hell no -thats unthinkable to sit him down with Crob or something. The dude here started to tell one tom story and Crob cuts him off with the bank stuff so dude tells that story instead of the one he was about to, then Crob keeps going, "but let me ask you something" throw a can at his head like.
Same here! Was sitting up top, and I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn and it’s Penny and Creager, completely blitzed, and he asks me “what heat is it?” lol
I always respected how tom is a man of few words. Just let’s his skating do the talking. So many years in the pocket. What a treat to watch all of this old footage and listen to penny stories. Thanks mate
...dude had the most laid back, casual style, feet like magnets always on the bolts, his flips were slow and effortless an just hung there till he's feet show up and go '...I got ya mate'...I'm about to buy his shoes again and one of my first boards was the Flip Mushroom a friend gave me. THE man.
Tom Penny has always had that enigmatic personality and mystique to his skating. When Flip Sorry came out, probably watched that 1500x and Tom had that part when Arto Saari gets knocked out and is like in a psychedelic state and you see the Tom Penny part... That was legendary. Tom is just one of those guys that makes skateboarding look so simplistic and effortless that if you didn't know anything about skateboarding you would think it's an easy sport. Tom is like a skate ninja, doesn't do really any talking, he just lets his skills do the talking for him. 💯👌
I grew up with Chad in Az and we had lived in SD together as well. After they had just got on TSA, we were at mission beach park, smoking weed across from the coaster. Chad introduced us to each other, Tom said, "what's up Kearney". Tom Penny said my name once. Haha!
Lol u got recognized by one of the goats... ur skate life is now complete. I've met Jamie Thomas 4 times and this man legit looks at me and says hold on what's ur name again...? Tommy Sandoval I've met and skated with him at my buddies mini ramp he has in his barn like 4 times and he smokes hella bud and doesn't forget my name 🤣 I grew up with Ben hatchel so I've met some amazing dudes in the industry I've been blessed... thats for sure.
What makes Tom Penny so clean, is that he flips the board really fast to be able to catch the board as early as possibibly human and that lets him setup his smooth landings everytime.
I was blessed to skate in the 90 's and I was lucky to have that effect that the board elevates and sticked to your feet . My friends always pointed that and asked me how I did it, and it is imposible to explain, is just the way you skate 9:55
@@DARRENTINOnz i record to day my last video mix for my chanel then i did prétend post it 2 weeks ago. Infrench there a werd for this "procrastination" i'm sure you ha the same évent at the moment. Big love, and i do realy love what you done.
I wonder how much money he couldve made if he went full Muska back in the day. Just be everywhere and got his name up on everything. I actually heard he's like the most functional heroin/pill addict ever. Thats why he took his hiatus and been told he hangs with some really gnarly people. So i guess he could never be in the spotlight like that but most respect him so much that they'd never publicly call him out. He's so naturally talented that he could quit for 6 years and come back to everyone saying "Well i guess he was skating during his time away." He probably wasnt. But hes just a masterclass on his board.
I’ve heard something similar. Supposedly he had some extremely rough anxiety/ depression where he had a hard time being around crowds, which I can relate to. Luckily he’s talented enough to come back whenever he wants and produce actual footage each time.
anyone ever notice in the bam margera story of the kickflip he says he rode a “crappy powell” but he’s clearly ridin a guy mariano girl board in the clip ?
Why? Those are his normal clothes. To him, skaters wearing wetsuit jeans they stole from their sister probably look odd all the same. Penny’s skate style is literally poetry in fluid motion and a big part of how it presents is his style in the kit he wears. Why anyone would want to change that to suit their needs is puzzling.
@@jeremyprovonsil7886 first, how did you get from regular size closed, to a wetsuit? I appreciate that you admire the style that was popular in the 90s. I lived through it and skated during that time. If you look at old footage of Tom, you’ll see that he didn’t always wear such huge clothes. His clothes now wouldn’t even fit Big Black, they’d be too large.
@@travishart6420 oh cool, thanks. I bet it was huge. after watching those old Penny videos and reading some comments, i spent a couple of days thinking "what is style? and where does it come from" some people were saying "fake style" which, IDK what that means,,, so,,, in your opinion, was/is Tom Penny known more for his style, or his skating ability?
Maybe t realize they im wrong but i feel like tom penny is the norm MacDonald of skateboarding. At the time people overlook them but years later people have to acknowledge how great they were even if they might not have been an influence to you personally
Don't believe it for a second; he's never had a reason or the need to victimise someone by stealing their anything. You may think it was him but I call straight BS on ya! Best have proof before you slander a person, or yer gonna upset someone ya might regret, BELL END!
