This song makes me feel so nostalgic. And it sums up a lot of what my life is. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' music has been there for me through the good and the bad. I don't know what I'd do without it.
This song gets better and better the older I get - the meaning shape shifts over time - a classic. Seems about America the country now - not just some young girl - America is the young girl....and the dream has always been a myth - always just out of reach as a country. thanks Mr. Petty.
A lot of musicians at his level play to gratify themselves. Tom Petty was trying to share an experience with us. I'm wrong a lot, but the best music is honest, and this man had that. A true artist. A communicater. A guy that could make everyone feel like he wrote a song just for them. Not a hint of pretentiousness, but totally aware he was special and like us at the same time. He believed in music. He made that so obvious. When a celebrity passes it usually doesnt effect me, but this guy took you on a trip with every song...made you feel like everything would work out...rappers, doctors, punk rock kids, anybody could get lost in a Tom Petty song. He's a guy that i truly believe if he never made a dime off music would have continued to make it. "The ability to master music is to be able to do anything you want and then not do it." - Chopain (probably spelled that name wrong). We all had access to the same words...but he could take a sentence and say something everyone felt but just couldnt find the words. Truly special. Glad I got to share a planet with this guy for a little bit.
Mike Campbell is so underrated as a top guitar player. He’s definitely in my top three. Jacksonville Florida’s own. Ribault High school’s finest. Andt they’ve produced some fine Americans. Primary in the sports world but Mike Campbell is the best. I aspire to be him and his level of greatness.
Yes, sir. Today really sucks. It's hard to believe how much you can feel the loss of a person you never met. But yet you've known him your whole life because you grew up hearing his music.
Totally sucks. I was there with my husband at this show in the front. What a show and so wish the recordings back then were better because this show was so crazy good! RIP Tom Petty. You were the best of the best.
I just about had a breakdown after hearing of Tom's death.!Iirc, I think I initially heard of him in Trouser Press not long after his debut came out on Shelter Records. I ended up picking that LP up on a whim before it had received any airplay in the U.S. and I think I played "American Girl" about 50 times that day because I loved the Byrdsy tinge to it. I was hooked after that, of course. I only saw him live once, at the Santa Monica Civic with David Johansen opening on the You're Gonna Get it tour. It was a great gig and I had excellent seats to boot! Arguably even more so than with Springsteen, Petty was America's best post-Dylan and post-Joni Mitchell singer/songwriter and, at a time when pop music is just overthought and dumbed down manufactured crap, losing a qiant like Petty at such a young age is downright tragic. He definitely elevated the art form and for that we music fans will always be grateful.
OMG! How fucking good is that!!!!! We were all so lucky to have him. He's gone, but we can still be in awe and enjoy the music he made. His music keeps him alive forever.
Was lucky to have seen Petty in person ....sorry to hear his Dance is Done and His music Stopped....but i'm going on Proud to say I'll Dance a few for Tom until I get on the other side too....Cheers Everyone...don't Be Sad ...Be GLAD we got to enjoy The Heartbreakers
i heard this song for the first time while working at a restaurant the other day. i loved it as soon as it started. i had to listen to the whole thing!
My room mate used to buy tons of albums and one day I found this first Petty album in the pile and put it on. Hooked ever since and this song and Luna were the main ones that did it. RIP Tom, you fought the Good Fight.
As my buddy John said over 30 years ago as we were "digging" in his Jeep back home in Florida; "the greatest rock n roll song ever." I won't agree or disagree. Top 5 for sure.
So bittersweet I had so many great times at Homs shows I was in my 20's to 30's hanging out w/my lil sis n her friends at that time we had so much fun an I was the queen bee among them cause of my age an I had a car an a credit card we could go n do whatever we wanted well we spent several nites camping for tickets an and goin to tha shows now my youngens r grown some did well 4 themselves some r gone an me I'm still just kinda waiting around like us American Girls do
He touched so many people with his music, a gift to the world, we all are a little better for having had him to play the music that touches us all. He made things a little more tolerable when things aren't so good and made us happy when they were.
I saw Tom several times in my life and was never disappointed, he can get a crowd going and sing with him no matter where. God Bless you Tom for the memories, your amongst a lot of your old friends now so jam on up there.
+teej petty said stan's drums and voice at shows was the best in the world.... the problem with stan was his life-of-the-party-type-egoist-jerk persona. (can we all say david lee roth) petty just out-grew that scene.
According the Zanes, Stan also asked for a bigger cut of the pie (maybe not directly) and Tom didn’t like that...just another one of the reasons why Tom parted ways with him, it seems.
Tom Petty is now in critical condition after going into cardiac arrest in his Malibu home. They released a report earlier today stating that he had died, later retracting the statement and saying he lives. I am frazzled right now, and pray to God he makes it!
I was there for this! Won tickets through KMET or KLOS (can't remember now). I called my boyfriend at work and told him he had to come home so we could go. He came home, I hopped on the back of his bike and we flew from OC to LA through rush hour traffic. It was AWESOME!!!! It was at the Wiltern in L.A.
IT IS A GREAT VERSION!Si JUST LIKE SHARING SOME MUSIC. TAKING A BREAK BEFORE BED. STILL LOTS TO DO. ENJOY YOUR MARDI GRAS. I'M NOT GOING THIS YEAR. I WANT TO JUST TO MUCH TO GET DONE AND THIS COLD. SHARE PLEASE. THANKS...KARRIE ANN
Notice the beat is off on purpose. I heard it's a challenge to sing, or play together that way, but it sounds fantastic. I think Stevie Nicks or Fleetwood had a song that was off beat like this, too, and it was a hit. I can't think of the name of it at the moment. Just a brilliant song!
how can someone put the thumbs down on this. it is a masterpeice!!! i am 13 almost 14 and i was only 9 when he died. i cant stand new music. i love his music i have a giant poster of his next to my bed. i dont know why i said this but i did have a amazing day.
ds ago I miss Tom. Despite his success, he was the most humble individuual. I saw about 30 of his concerts (California, New York - Beacon, MSG, Jones Beach). I saw him aged but always give him the best he was able to. RIP.
The running down a dream documentary was absolutely brilliant and shows just how brilliant petty and the band are.he is so frank and honest and such a driven guy that i just wish he could enjoy his success.he looked so happy with the wilburys and obviously still has great resntment towards his father.Still that anger has produced some of the bets music of the last 35 years and will live on for many ayear.I salute you mr petty for bringing me uo when i felt down. a true rocknroll great.
