After trying to play this song many times in the past, could never quite figure it out. Your explanations got me over the hump. Thanks Marty! You’ve heard it a million times, but you have to be the best at your craft.
Sounds great. Only saw Tom once live 5 or 6 years ago. Totally blown away by his live show, was one of the best if not the best concerts I have seen. He was genius in his song writing. He is missed.
Very nice demonstration of a great Heartbreakers song, thank you! I stopped playing guitar about 3 years ago, but I am going to pick it up again since I am retiring. Already have the Rickenbacker 12 string ready to go.
Nice one Marty! I have an Epi dbl neck and I swear....they should make it a law that 12 strings NEED locking tuners!! I did this with several of my guitars cause I play pretty hard, but the most logical of all was the 12 string. I pull it off the wall and actually play,...not tune up first.... the bonus is how much easier it makes re-stringing!! Thanks again Marty!!
Outstanding tutorial, Marty! Gonna print out the lyrics, so I can add this to my 12-String (Rick) repertoire. Thank you! I recall hearing TP mention that he had that intro lick in his head -- and playing it over, over & over & over -- but had the hardest time conjuring verse lyrics to it. He even ended up pissing his neighbors off, because he just kept playing that 3-chord lick. My response: "Hey STFU, and be glad you can say you shared an effing wall with me!!"
I've never seen a 12 string electric...but only go to town about twice a year!! Hey if you could, can we have a tutorial on Breakdown" one day? Thanks!
Wow! Well done Marty! Absolutely love this lesson of my fave Tom Petty number. That Danelectro would sound 💯 better if you changed the nut and restrung it like a Ric! Itd defo save on the expense of buying a 360 12.
I have an 11 year who is learning guitar and loves your videos. They can already play some some songs you have done. They asking if you have done "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkle?
Seriously, it would be nice to have some of Mike Campbell's Solo parts on this song and some of his others. Please keep the old classic/early Tom Petty songs coming. "You Got Lucky" would be one old classic to do. Just sayin' brother.
KELLY My Guitar Sage did a lesson on You Got Lucky I believe. I think he shows Mike's licks too but don't quote me on that...it was awhile ago!! Erich uses his vintage Gretsch so I'm pretty sure! Cheers!!
Never thought I wanted to learn this 1, but what a great song. Marty, show a video on best way to change strings on that New 12stringer !!! (( Equipment Thurs ))
Hey Marty. I just ordered one of these babies but it's on back order for four weeks or so for some reason in the black. Someone else that ordered one from GC had his money refunded and was told they don't sell them anymore whatever that meant. I hope I get mine. Anyways, I wanted to ask you if you could teach another Tom Petty song. I've been trying to learn "Saving Grace" for a while. I found a couple of people trying to teach it but I can't understand what they are doing. They seem to be trying to show off more than teach or it just isn't their specialty. It's got a type or style of guitar playing that I'm not familiar with. Especially the part that sounds kinda like something ZZ Top would play. Saving Grace was one of TP's most popular radio songs and is included in most of his concerts. Could you please teach it sometime. Thanks Marty. You really are the best guitar instructor around.
I learned how to play the guitar from RU-vid and most of the videos I learnt from were yours. Thank you so much Marty! Could you please teach how to play "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin or Dire straits "Romeo and Juliet"
Hey Marty thanks to you I picked up playing the guitar and so far I'm into 4 months of playing and have learned probably a dozen songs from you, I don’t know if you know much about pop punk but I’d love to hear you play December by Neck Deep, it’s such an amazing song and I haven’t found any great tabs or tutorials for it and was hoping that you could help me out.
Hey Marty! Love your channel. I would love to hear some Stevie nicks/Fleetwood Mac for acoustic. Preferably Seven wonders or Dreams. I would love to jam out to those
only thing for me...on that A7sus chord...i like to play it with the open d string just fretting the g string on that A note...leaving out the fifth...sounds better to me...more like an open chord...idk
