Tom Petty - Shadow Of A Doubt (Live On Fridays) 

I worked at ABC TV at the time and was able to get backstage for this performance. I was standing stage left when Bruce Springsteen came and stood next to me on my right, and then Little Steven came and stood next to Bruce. The 3 of us stood there watching the band rock out, I was blessed.

We had a fucking Legend on this planet. Tom Petty was the most unique and a phenomenonal human to rock and roll this planet. Missing you Mr.Petty

Mike Campbell absolutely deserves more accolades & higher ratings than he’s ever gotten as a virtuoso guitar player and should absolutely be at the top of the “coolest Rock Gods” Club, but he’d probably hate that cause he’s the coolest!

This just has to be one of the best live performances on a variety or talk show of all time. It's perfect . . every cue is so very on the mark.

My favorite Tom Petty song - and they nailed it. That band is so good, so tight.

The Heartbreakers went on to become the greatest American rock band of their time, and you can see the seeds of that in this performance. Benmont Tench is sublime, and the Blair/Lynch pairing was a highly under-rated rhythm section. Mike Campbell is a master of tone and song crafting.

Wow! No bands like this anymore today. So tight and a great energy. Just a great time and memories.

Man, what a tight band they were!

Man, in the late 70's and early 80's, no one could touch TP and the Heartbreakers. This is so good, it made me cry. Every single guy is a musician I point to when asked about great musicians. There were not just great musicians but this was a great band. Howie was good RIP, but it was never quite the same without Ron Blair. Together these this group of guys were just magic.

Tom was so dedicated to his fans and his music. He showed the true measure of his values and the only musician I know of that told his label hell no I don't want to charge the fans a dollar more than standard for his album. I think that was the "DAMN THE TORPEDOES" album. When people like the eagles started charging a hundred dollars or more for concert tickets again he stood up and said HELL NO and his ticket price was set at fifty dollars maximum. To tell the truth I would not have wanted to be a promoter that tried to cross him on ticket prices. There is a saying us Southern boys use its "don't make me slap the damn taste outta your mouth"..That would've been word up to the promoter that tried him. Now that is a man of principles , don't you wish we had more artists like him. I'll not say who it was but I wanted to catch em live one more time. They were doing a show or two in Atlanta so I called wanting two tickets. The dude at the ticket place said ok that'll be eleven hundred dollars. I'll take your card numbers or you can get em on our website. Don't know how long the shock lasted. I thought back to Tom and the dollar savings and max fifty dollar ticket price. He is was more than Rock n Roll star , so much more.

There must be some software flaw that produced 10 thumbs down, because how could ANYONE give this performance a thumbs down. Great song. Great band. Great live performance.

Played the crap out of that 8-track back when this Album came out. A gift from my brother. 20+ years on Christmas we both got each other this CD. Have multiple copies of the Album as well. Great stuff.

Saw TPATH in 1977 at small clubs in L.A. I was a sophomore in HS. My friends thought I wa nuts for digging this band. But they thought I was nuts for diggin on Blondie, Ramones......So fuck em! I WAS RIGHT \m/ RIP TP. Thank you for the great shows.....

Why I Still Hang Around

They are the greatest band and so great in concert. I will miss TP until I am gone. Great songwriter, great singer, great everything and so totally adorable. Sorry, I can't help myelf, he was just so beautigul.

What a concept - show up on a TV show and actually play instead of lip-syncing to the studio recording! Oh - and while we’re at it - let’s make the live version kick the studio version’s ass……!!!!!

I love this video, it's so well filmed that you get to see each member of the band doing their thing. And it captures Tom Petty's young, skinny, fiery stage perfectly. This song really percolates, and the ending is just stellar; with Stan Lynch's surprise outro on the congas just when you think the song is over. Just in case a guitar-playing Petty fan scrolls the comments years later for clues? One thing that makes this song great is Petty playing his guitar in open A tuning, which produces some otherwise unexplainably sonic chord tones.

My 1st concert, 11 days after this show. Damn The Torpedoes Tour at Pine Knob (Tommy Tutone opened), will always be my favorite Petty Album!

I still can't figure out why this is probably my most favorite Petty song. Maybe something about that sound bringing out memories of my college days while I was at WVU driving around in my 73' VW van. Those were the days! If you see this page Lorraine just know I've always missed you. Tom Petty was amazing! We'll always miss you Tom.

Great vid. I remember watching this on my old TV back in 1980 when it was on Friday night. I was so into it and the memory of it stuck with me all these years. Such a great live version. Great energy and so tight. Stan Lynch was such a great drummer and such a big part of the Heartbreakers. Was sad he left. They were all so young. Rest In Peace Tom Petty.

I am aware of Tom petty. I was in my 20s when this was happening. But I haven't heard this song since then. Why wasn't this just as a big of a hit, with the longevity, like the others?

I love this band so much. I watch their music videos all the time. I bought 2 books about Tom Petty & read them while I was in the hospital. I had hoped to see him in concert someday. We did go to the first Firefly show here a few years ago to see him. It was so crowd ed we couldn't even get close enough to the stage.
