In this video, Mike Campbell talks about the solid-bodied Rickenbacker 12-string he let Tom use for the cover of "Damn the Torpedoes". He also plays a little of the song he wrote on it, "Here Comes My Girl". This was not included in the film and was a bonus feature on the DVD and Blu-Ray discs.

Amen to that!! That Rick has got a beautiful jangly, twinky, clinky, chimey way of getting its signals across to us!! It's mostly all in those Split-bar vintage, orig. "toaster"(as they're appelated) single-coil pickups!! They have a proprietary sound all their own, 'specially sitting on maple!! I've had the pleasure of owning 3 Rick 12-strings...my orig, which I still own, FireGlo, a MapleGlo 360/12 like Petty plays on The Waiting..which I sadly had to sell to pay bills.., and a 1988 reissue of Geo. Harrison's doublebound 360/12, which preceded Mr Campbell's famous axe. Wasn't too pleased with that one, though gorgeous. Sold it for what I paid, luckily.. Own a mid-70's Rick 4001 bass in FireGlo, love it..plays beautifully, sounds deep & punchy, like they should. Rickenbacker guitars are unique, a Law into themselves, pros & cons notwithstanding.

Beautiful guitar. I remember seeing that "Damn the Torpedoes" poster in a record store window around 1980 or '81, when I'd bought a 1966 Rickenbacker 330 for $115. Other kids in high school only knew of, or had, Gibson or Fender. I was happy to see somebody recent and cool at that time with a Rick.

NO ONE else on RU-vid is teaching this song accurately, and here's Mike showing me in thirty minutes. I loved it so much, I found a guy 90 minutes away selling his 2007 Model 620/12 (same body & color), drove there and snatched it up! And Mike's right... It has beautiful, high-harmonic overtones. Bless this guy's heart!

They had no idea if that record was gonna be a smash or not. Nobody ever does when they set out to make a record or do any creative endeavour. Easy to look back now and be nonchalant after most of those songs are still on the radio to this day. Anything showbjz related is a crapshoot really. They were also not doing a lot of overdubs. Just playing straight through printing right to the multitrack through that Neve 8028 at Sound City that Dave Grohl now has.

I love this video and have watched it about 4 times, months between watchings. I enjoy it and it keeps coming back to my mind so I watch it again. I like the Rickenbacker 12 story, I love how he got a great deal on a guitar that he didn't even want at first but it turned out to be a gem. I like the line about every guitar having a sweet spot, that makes me like my guitar better knowing it has a sweet spot that other guitars might not have. I wish I had a lot of nice guitars to play like Mike does but I don't. I do envy that.

Each guitar has its own color, but the brightest color for me is the Rick 12-1993 plus model (with the wider neck). I just bought a Rick 12 1993 Plus model (with wider neck). The model happened to be a demo, so had a welcomed discount of about $500 dollars. When I got this baby home, got it tuned and set up...that first full sound sent chills through my body. After God and then my wife, I'm still free falling in love with this Rick-12. For me, personally, nothing communicates such divinity and purity than the jingle jangle of 12 string Rich. Heck with the Harps! In heaven I have no doubt what Angel's really play are Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitars! DUDE!

One of my early heroes on guitar....love him....i used to get so excited when the "waiting" came on MTV,, gawking at the rickenbackers....... and he played this guitar and took that incredible iconic solo....oh...sigh...those were the days....
@samburkes7552
@samburkes7552 3 года назад
Actually, Campbell used a 6-string on that solo in the studio. Petty used his blonde, MapleGlo Rick 12. The vid. shows Mike with this guitar tho..a bit of Rick promo ..

@@samburkes7552 oh...was it a six string Ric that Mike used or his Broadcaster on the solo?

According to Rickenbacker, this is also the very first 620-12 ever made. It was a prototype called the 625-12. But it is, for all intents and purposes, a 620-12.

+Chris Simpson What's the difference between this "620-12" and a 660-12.
@chrissimpson7071
@chrissimpson7071 8 лет назад
+james geiger The 620-12 (nowadays) has Rickenbacker high gain pickups and dual input jacks. The 660-12 has Toaster pickups and a checkered binding with one input.

A few years ago, this guitar's "twin" was up for auction on ebay. Identical guitar, the very next serial #. The seller said that the two of them were prototypes made by Rickenbacker for that year's NAMM show. It looked like it had been stored in a damp basement, lots of rust and pitting, but it wasn't falling apart or anything.
@fretts
@fretts 6 лет назад
You're right, it was a prototype and supposedly shown at the NAMM show, didn't get any orders and was sold out of Rickenbacker's "seconds" shop. That's one reason it doesn't have an "R" tailpiece. I went with Mike out to Covina or Azusa to go see about this guitar. I believe the seller bought it from Rickenbacker's factory store. It was in perfect condition. When Tom saw it for the first time, he said "wow, an oldie goldie never been soldie". Mike has a great ear for guitars and amps.

Yes his painting analogy is what I should use to explain to people why I have so many different looking and sounding guitars and amps. It’s always metal dude who always ask me why I have Rickenbackers and Gretschs even though I’m more of a “hard rock/punk” musician or whatever. And I’m like, sometimes even the heaviest of songs needs a layer or two of super delicate, clean, jangly guitar. Or maybe a layer of crunchy 50’s style rock n’ roll guitar. Subtle dynamic shifts in the instrumental aspect of a song are equally, if not more important than the melody itself. You don’t have to hate the classics to be punk. Pop rock is the ultimate music teacher

Rickenbacker 660/12 sells for well over $2000 now. $150 back then is still only $600 today. That's a total steal even without the guitar's history!

The voice at the beginning of the song is Mike Campbell's wife. He happen to record her at their home and they used it on the record . : "It's just the normal noises in here."

I Agree with him on: the ric 12 is delicate and you need to be precise or things can get messy. He handles it well.

To Sam B idiosyncrasies is a good description...... you can’t just treat it like a regular guitar. I try to emulate these sort of sounds. Lots of cascading notes overlapping each other. The Byrd’s tambourine man or turn turn turn.
